Background: Radiation therapy prophylaxis for heterotopic ossification is well-established for the hip, either pre or post-operatively. There is limited data for this treatment in non-hip sites. We report our institution’s experience. Methods: From October 2004 to August 2015, a total of 39 non-hip sites in 38 patients were treated with prophylactic radiation therapy for heterotopic ossification at our institution. An IRB approved retrospective review was performed. There were 15 patients who received treatments to the elbow, 13 to the knee (1 bilateral for a total of 14 knees), and 10 to other sites (leg stump (2), pubic symphysis (2), femur (1), foot (1), humerus stump (1), abdominal wall (1), shoulder (1), thigh (1)). All but 1 patient were treated with a single fraction treatment with 700 or 800 cGy. One patient received 2000 cGy in 10 fractions to the abdominal wall for heterotopic ossification extending from the xiphoid process. Results: Fifteen patients underwent treatment to the elbow with a median follow-up of 5 months (0 - 99). Median age for this group was 50 years (37 - 69). Nine (60.0%) patients had evidence of heterotopic ossification prior to surgery. All (100%) of the elbow patients were free from recurrence at last follow-up. There were no acute or late toxicities noted. For treatment to the knee, there were 4 (28.6%) recurrences, all in cases where there were pre-operative heterotopic ossification. There were two other recurrences in the non-hip, elbow or knee sites: one patient who received radiation therapy to the abdominal wall and one patient who underwent treatment to the thigh. conclusions: Prophylactic radiation therapy with 700 cGy or 800 cGy in 1 fraction either before or after surgery remains a safe and effective treatment for both hip and most non-hip sites. Fractionated treatment may be used for larger treatment fields, however experience is limited.

Background:?We aim to estimate prostate-specific antigen (PSA) half-life after salvage radiation therapy (SRT) in patients with detectable PSA after radical prostatectomy (RP). Methods: A total of 272 patients treated with salvage radiotherapy between July 1987 and July 2010 were included in this IRB approved retrospective analysis. The median pre-salvage radiotherapy dose was 0.6 ng/mL (range, 0.2 - 21.9 ng/mL), 47 patients had at least a minimum tumor stage of T3b, 29 had a Gleason score over 7, and median dose was 66.6 Gy (range, 54.0 - 72.4 Gy). Results: The estimated PSA half-life in our cohort of patients was 3.0 months (95% cI, 2.9 - 3.2 months;range, 0.5 - 28.5 months). There was no evidence of a statistically significant association between PSA half-life and any baseline clinicopathologic characteristics. The median interval between individual PSA measurements was noted to be 4.6 months (range, 0.1 - 20.4 months). The median interval from the start of radiation therapy to the nadir PSA was 6.3 months (range, 1.3 - 79.1 months). PSA half-life remained approximately 3.0 months when accounting for infrequent and outlier PSA values. conclusion: The PSA half-life after definitive RT has been reported to be approximately 1.6 months. Our analysis found the PSA half-life after SRT to be approximately twice that of patients treated with definitive RT. These results provide useful information to radiation oncologists when counseling patients both before and after SRT regarding expectations about PSA measurements.

A novel crystal characterization instrument has been built up in which a combination of X-ray multiple diffraction and X-ray topography is applied to enabling the cross-correlation between micro-crystallographic symmetry and its spatial dependence in relation to lattice defects. This facility is used to examine, in a self-consistent manner, growth sector-dependant changes to both the crystallographic structure and the lattice defects associated with the action of habit-modifying additives in a number of representative crystal growth systems. In addition, the new instrument can be used to probe micro-crystallographic aspects(such as distortion to crystal symmetry) and relate these in a spatially resolved manner to the crystal defect structure in crystals doped with known habit modifiers.

Forensic haplotype analysis of the male Y chromosome is currently used to establish the number of male donors in sexual assaults,the number of male bleeders in blood pattern analysis,and for ancestry correlation to genetic founder populations in biogeographic *** forensic laboratory applications,its primary use is for DNA profile generation with trace amounts of male DNA in the presence of excess female DNA(*** identification,male component of fingernail scrapings).Our study supports the potential use of the Y chromosome in a"dragnet"approach(most haplotypes are unique)similar to that described by Kayser in 2017 for solving a cold case sex assault and homicide in The *** study also researched the potential for the identification of an ancestral Irish genetic"footprint"linked to surname O'Brien and identified multiple founder group origins in Ireland and England as well as three samples with the Dal Riata(a Gaelic overkingdom)ancestral *** study indicates correlation to ancestral Irish ancestry by haplotype but not conclusively to the O'Brien surname.

A mechanistic study of cO removal on a small H-saturated platinum cluster

cO poisoning to platinum catalysts has long been recognized as one of the major technical obstacles in heterogeneous catalysis and its successful removal represents a significant challenge to a wide variety of applications. Using density functional theory (DFT), we performed systematic theoretical calcula-tions to explore the cO removal mechanisms, in the presence of hydrogen, via oxidation by oxygen to form cO2 or reduction by hydrogen to form formaldehyde using a subnano Pt cluster as a model for catalyst nanoparticles. We show that cO oxidation is both thermochemically and kinetically difficult at low H coverage but becomes very exothermic with a moderate activation barrier at high H coverage, suggesting that the oxidation can be carried out readily at elevated temperatures. Doping the Pt cluster with Ru can significantly improve the oxidation thermochemical energy and moderately reduce the activation barrier. The results are consistent with experimental observations. We found that cO reduction by hydrogen to form formaldehyde is moderately endothermic. However, the reaction is predicted to be kinetically difficult due to the relatively high activation barriers associated with the sequential H attacks to the cO molecule.

Real-time voltage stability assessment(VSA)has long been an extensively research *** recent years,rapidly mounting deep learning methods have pushed online VSA to a new height that large amounts of learning algorithms are applied for VSA from the perspective of measurement *** learning methods generally require a large dataset which contains measurements in both secure and insecure states,or even unstable ***,in practice,the data of insecure or unstable state is very rare,as the power system should be guaranteed to operate far away from voltage *** this circumstance,this paper proposes an autoencoder based method which merely needs data of secure state to evaluate voltage stability of a power *** principle of this method is that an autoencoder purely trained by secure data is expected to only create precise reconstruction for secure data,while it fails to rebuild data of insecure ***,the residual of reconstruction is effective in indicating ***,to develop a more accurate and robust algorithm,long short-term memory(LSTM)networks combined with fully-connected(Fc)layers are used to build the autoencoder,and a moving strategy is introduced to bias the features of testing data toward the secure feature *** experiments and comparison with traditional machine learning algorithms demonstrate the effectiveness and high accuracy of the proposed method.
