AIM： To investigate genetic differences between Crohn＇s disease （CD） patients with a sustained remission vs relapsers after discontinuing infliximab while in cortico- steroid-free remission. METHODS： Forty-eight CD patients received infliximab and were in full corticosteroid-free clinical remission but then discontinued infliximab for reasons other than a loss of response, were identified by review of an electronic database and charts. Infliximab-associated remis- sion was defined as corticosteroid-free plus normaliza- tion of clinical disease activity [CD activity index （CDAI）〈 150] during follow-up visits based on physician global assessments. A CD relapse （loss of infliximab-induced remission） was clinically defined as a physician visit for symptoms of disease activity （CDAI 〉 220） and a thera- peutic intervention with CD medication（s）, or a hospital- ization with complications related to active CD. Genetic analyses were performed on samples from 14 patients （n = 6 who had a sustained long term remission after stopping infliximab, n -- 8 who rapidly relapsed after stopping infliximab）. Nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain 2 （NOD2）/caspase activation recruitment do- main 15 （CARD15） polymorphisms （R702W, G908R and L1007fs） and the inflammatory bowel disease 5 （IBDS） polymorphisms （IGR2060a1 and IGR3081a1） were ana- lyzed in each group. RESULTS： Five single nucleotide polymorphisms of IBD5 and NOD2/CARD15 genes were successfully analyzed for all 14 subjects. There was no signifcant increase in frequency of the NOD2/CARD15 polymor- phisms （R702W, G908R and L1007fs） and the IBD5 polymorphisms （IGR2060al and IGR3081a1） in either group of patients; those whose disease relapsed rap- idly or those who remained in sustained long term remission following the discontinuation of infliximab. Prior industrial hygiene research involving wheel brake changing on a light general aviation aircraft has shown negligible potential for asbestos fiber exposure to mechanics that perform such work. This is despite the use of organic-style brake friction pads that contained asbestos. It has been otherwise established that chrysotile asbestos is largely degraded to a non-crystalline, amorphous substance by the heat and mechanical shear forces inherent to the braking process. However, trace (<1.0%) quantities of chrysotile have been found in brake wear dust. Disc-style brakes, the types used on aircraft, are of open design, such that wear dust is typically dispersed into the ambient air during and after brake application. For fixed-gear aircraft, the brake assemblies are also subject to substantial air velocities while the aircraft is in flight. This research was undertaken to measure and characterize the airflows experienced by aircraft wheel assemblies during takeoff, cruise, and landing maneuvers. No wear (brake) dust was observed at any point during the study.

This review is a current summary of the role that both zinc deficiency and zinc supplementation can play in the etiology and therapy of a wide range of gastrointestinal diseases. The recent literature describing zinc action on gastrointestinal epithelial tight junctions and epithelial barrier function is described. Zinc enhancement of gastrointestinal epithelial barrier function may figure prominently in its potential therapeutic action in several gastrointestinal diseases.

Rapid on-site identification of volatile organic compounds （VOCs） in ambient air is an important first step in remediation efforts. This study describes modification of a commercially available, portable GC/MS system and development of an analysis protocol for rapid （〈 3 min） sampling and identification of VOCs typically found at contaminated sites at the low ppbv level.

The novel coronavirus pandemic,first reported in December 2019,was caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2).SARS-CoV-2 infection leads to a strong immune response and activation of antigen-presenting cells,which can elicit acute respiratory distress syndrome(ARDS)characterized by the rapid onset of widespread inflammation,the so-called cytokine *** response to viral infections,monocytes are recruited into the lung and subsequently differentiate into dendritic cells(DCs).DCs are critical players in the development of acute lung inflammation that causes ***,we focus on the interaction of a specific SARS-CoV-2 open reading frame protein,ORF8,with *** show that ORF8 binds to DCs,causes pre-maturation of differentiating DCs,and induces the secretion of multiple proinflammatory cytokines by these *** addition,we identified DC-SIGN as a possible interaction partner of ORF8 on *** of ORF8 leads to reduced production of IL-1β,IL-6,IL-12p70,TNF-α,MCP-1(also named CCL2),and IL-10 by ***,a neutralizing antibody blocking the ORF8-mediated cytokine and chemokine response could be an improved therapeutic strategy against SARS-CoV-2.

Prophylactic Bactericidal Orthopedic Implants – Animal Testing Study

This paper summarizes preliminary rat studies aimed at identifying the effectiveness of using electrically stimulated silver as a bactericidal agent for indwelling residual hardware devices (RHD). A variety of bactericidal indwelling devices were designed, fabricated and surgically inserted into the medullary cavity of live rats. The rats were inoculated with Staphylococcus aureus to try and induce osteomyelitis. A total of 37 surgeries were performed by implanting the rats with both control and potentially bactericidal devices. As surgical procedures and devices were improved, it appeared that the implants produced antibiotic effects in the animals. All of the control animals and all of the animals where the device failed tested positive for Staphylococcus aureus growth. Of the rats with operational bactericidal devices (those that survived the surgery and incubation period), half tested negative for Staphylococcus aureus. The device designs are discussed in this paper along with the test procedures, operating practices and results. A statistical analysis of the results, which shows a very high confidence level in the effectiveness of electrically stimulated silver as a bactericidal agent/antibiotic, is also presented.

BACKGROUND Gallstones and cholecystectomy have been proposed as risk factors for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD).The reason for this may be that both gallstones,as well as NAFLD share several risk factors with regards to their ***,there is a lack of sufficient evidence showing an association between these clinical *** To determine whether there is a meaningful association between gallstones and cholecystectomy with *** We queried the National Inpatient Sample database from the years 2016 and 2017 using International Classification of Diseases,10th revision,Clinical Modification diagnosis codes to identify hospitalizations with a diagnosis of gallstone disease(GSD)(includes calculus of gallbladder without cholecystitis without obstruction and acquired absence of gallbladder)as well as NAFLD(includes simple fatty liver and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis).Odds ratios(ORs)measuring the association between GSD(includes gallstones and cholecystectomy)and NAFLD were calculated using logistic regression after adjusting for confounding *** Out of 14294784 hospitalizations in 2016-2017,159259 were found to have *** prevalence of NAFLD was 3.3%in patients with GSD and 1%in those *** was prevalent in 64.3%of women with GSD as compared to 35.7%of men with *** controlling for various confounders associated with NAFLD and GSD,multivariate-adjusted analysis showed that there was an association between NAFLD with gallstones[OR=6.32;95%confidence interval(CI):6.15-6.48]as well as cholecystectomy(OR=1.97;95%CI:1.93-2.01).The association between NAFLD and gallstones was stronger in men(OR=6.67;95%CI:6.42-6.93)than women(OR=6.05;95%CI:5.83-6.27).The association between NAFLD and cholecystectomy was stronger in women(OR=2.01;95%CI:1.96-2.06)than men(OR=1.85;95%CI:1.79-1.92).P value was less than 0.001 for all *** NAFLD is more prevalent in women with GSD than *** association between N
