Seroprevalence of brucellosis among exposed agro-pastoral communities in southern Saudi Arabia

Objective: To investigate the prevalence and risk factors of brucellosis in human and animal’s communities in southern Saudi ***: A cross-sectional sero-epidemiological study was conducted in Aseer and Jazan, Saudi Arabia(October 2017-October 2018). Human serum samples(n=339) were initially screened for Brucella antibodies and positive samples were further titrated for Brucella antibodies by immunocapture assay(titer of ≥1:320 as positive). Animal samples(n=828) were screened using the Rose Bengal test. Relationship status was dichotomized to measure and predict independent contributions to variations in human using univariate and multivariate stepwise binary logistic regression model. Results: The rate of brucellosis among the 339 human samples in the two regions was 33.9%, and the rate of acute brucellosis was 12.4%. The rate of brucellosis in animals was 4.7%. Human brucellosis among the target groups was higher in northwestern Aseer(53.3%) compared to Southeastern Aseer(25.9%) and Jazan region(20.6%). The disease was more prevalent among non-Saudi nationals(35.2%) compared to Saudis(30.5%). The rate of brucellosis among butchers and shepherds was 37.5% and 37.2%, respectively. The rate of brucellosis was 37.8% in people over 30 years of age. Our univariate analysis showed that residing in Aseer region(OR: 2.60, 95% CI: 1.50-4.40), especially residing in northwestern Aseer region(OR: 4.40, 95% CI: 2.40-7.90), frequent consumption of raw meat(OR: 2.90, 95% CI: 1.50-5.50), shepherds(OR: 2.10, 95% CI: 0.80-5.30), owning sheep(OR: 2.20, 95% CI: 1.10-4.40), daily contact with animals(OR: 2.10, 95% CI: 0.75-5.80), and those > 30-year-old(OR: 1.50, 95% CI: 1.00-2.40) were significantly associated with increased risks of brucellosis. Our multivariate analysis further showed that residing in northwestern Aseer(OR: 9.16, 95% CI: 3.39-24.76) and having sheep(OR: 1.16, 95% CI: 1.00-1.35) were significant and independent risks of brucellosis while residing in agric

Colorectal carcinoma in a Southern Mediterranean country: The Libyan scenario

AIM: To study the salient features of colorectal cancer(CRC) in ***: Patients records were gathered at the primary oncology clinic in eastern Libya for the period of one calendar year(2012). Using this data, various parameters were analyzed and age-standardized incidence rates were determined using the direct method and the standard ***: During 2012, 174 patients were diagnosed with CRC, 51.7%(n = 90) male and 48.3%(n = 84) females. The average age was 58.7(± 13.4) years, with men around 57.3(± 13) years old and women usually 60.1(± 13.8) years of age. Libya has the highest rate of CRC in North Africa, with an incidence closer to the European figures. The age-standardized rate for CRC was 17.5 and 17.2/100000 for males and females respectively. It was the second most common cancer, forming 19% of malignancies, with fluctuation in ranking and incidence in different cities/villages. Increasingly, younger ages are being afflicted and a higher proportion of patients are among the > 40 years *** two-thirds presented at either stage Ⅲ(22.4%) or Ⅳ(38.4%).CONCLUSION: Cancer surveillance systems should be established in order to effectively monitor the situation. Likewise, screening programs are invaluable in the Libyan scenario given the predominance of sporadic cases.

Using I-V characteristics to investigate selected contacts for SnO_2:F thin films

Fluorine doped tin oxide （SnO2：F） thin films were prepared on glass substrates by the spray pyrolysis （SP） technique at different substrate temperatures between 380480 ℃. The microstructure of the films was explored using scanning electron microscope observations. An investigation of selected contacts for the films was performed through the analysis of the I-V measurements which were taken in the dark at room temperature. Indium, aluminum and silver were selected as contacts where two strips of each metal were vacuum-evaporated on the surface of the film. The resistivity of the films was estimated from the linear I-V plots. It was found that the smallest resistivity was obtained using silver contacts, while the largest resistivity was obtained by using indium contacts. This is because silver diffuses in the film and participates in doping, while aluminum and indium cause compensation effects when they diffuse in the film. The best linear fit parameters are those of films with aluminum contacts, and the worst ones are those of films with indium contacts. Annealing was found to improve the electrical properties of the films, especially those deposited at a low substrate temperature. This is because it is expected to encourage crystal growth and to reduce the contact potential which leads to the formation of an alloy. Annealed films are more stable than un-annealed ones.

Bcl-2 expression significantly correlates with thymidylate synthase expression in colorectal cancer patients

AIM: To examine the expression of thymidylate synthase (TS) and oncoprotein Bcl-2 in advanced colorectal cancer (CRC) patients,and to determine their mutual relationship,association to therapeutic response and impact on disease ***: Tumor samples from 67 patients with CRC,who were treated at advanced stage with either irinotecan alone or in combination with 5-fluorouracil/ leucovorin,were analyzed for expression of TS and Bcl-2 using ***: A significant linear correlation between lower expression levels of Bcl-2 and lower levels of TS expression was found (P = 0.033).Patients with high levels of both TS and Bcl-2 expression had a significantly longer disease-free survival (DFS) (42.6 mo vs 5.4 mo,n = 25) than those with low TS/Bcl-2 index (P = 0.001).Tumors with low levels of both TS and Bcl-2 were associated with a longer survival with metastasis (WMS) interval in the whole patients group (n = 67,P = 0.035).TS/Bcl-2 index was not significantly related to disease-specific ***: The present data suggest that CRC patients with low TS/Bcl-2 demonstrate a significantly shorter DFS and longer WMS.

E-cadherin expression pattern in primary colorectal carcinomas and their metastases reflects disease outcome

AIM： To investigate the changes that occur in E-cadherin expression during the process of metastasis in colorectal cancer.METHODS： E-cadherin expression was detected by immunohistochemistry and two indices of expression were calculated which reflected the level of expression and the locations （membrane and cytoplasm）. Univariate and multivariate survival analyses were used to assess the value of these two E-cadherin indices as predictors of both disease-free （DFS） and disease-specific （DSS） survival. RESULTS： E-cadherin membrane index （MI）, but not cytoplasmic index （CI）, was significantly higher in primary tumors than their metastases （P = 0.0001）. Furthermore, both primary tumor MI and CI were higher among the patients who developed subsequent metastasis （P = 0.022 and P = 0.007, respectively）. Interestingly, both indices were higher in liver metastase compared to other anatomic sites （MI, P = 0.034 and CI, P = 0.022）. The CI of the primary tumors was a significant predictor of DFS （P = 0.042, univariate analysis）, with a strong inverse correlation between CI and DFS （P = 0.006, multivariate analysis）. Finally, the MI of primary tumor proved to be a significant independent predictor of DSS, with higher indices being associated with a more favorable outcome （P = 0.016）. CONCLUSION： Examination of E-cadherin expression and distribution in colorectal tumors can be extremely valuable in predicting disease recurrence. The observation that aberrant cytoplasmic expression of E-cadherin can predict disease recurrence is obviously of great importance for both patients and clinicians, and significantly affects decisions concerning the therapy and management of the patients.

Bandwidth optimization of a Planar Inverted-F Antenna using binary and real coded genetic algorithms

With the exponential development of mobile communications and the miniaturization of radio frequency transceivers, the need for small and low profile antennas at mobile frequencies is constantly growing. Therefore, new antennas should be developed to provide larger bandwidth and at the same time small dimensions. Although the gain in bandwidth performances of an antenna are directly related to its dimensions in relation to the wavelength, the aim is to keep the overall size of the antenna constant and from there, find the geometry and structure that give the best performance. The design and bandwidth optimization of a Planar Inverted-F Antenna (PIFA) were introduced in order to achieve a larger bandwidth in the 2 GHz band, using two optimization techniques based upon genetic algorithms (GA), namely the Binary Coded GA (BCGA) and Real-Coded GA (RCGA). During the optimization process, the different PIFA models were evaluated using the finite-difference time domain (FDTD) method-a technique belonging to the general class of differential time domain numerical modeling methods.

Tide variation and signals during 2000-2004 in the northern Gulf of Aqaba, Red Sea

Variations of tide and mean sea level (MSL) were studied during the period August 2000-March 2004 in the northern Gulf of Aqaba to detect the seasonal differences of tide records and tide components signals. The study revealed seasonal cycle of the MSL in the northern Gulf, which was lower during summer than in winter due to the relative strong wind and higher evaporation during summer. The MSL during the year of 2003 Fwas the lowest comparing to the other years duing the study period which might be related to wind driven force and mixed layer depth. The statistical comparison analysis of the MSL among winters, springs and summers of the years 2000- 2004 exhibited significant difference values (p K1) and a lunar terdiurnal constituent (M3), respectively.

A comparison between different ohmic contacts for ZnO thin films

There are several metals that form ohmic contacts for ZnO thin films, such as copper, aluminum and silver. The aim of this work is to make a comparison between these ohmic contacts. To achieve this purpose, polycrystalline ZnO thin films were prepared by the spray pyrolysis technique, and characterized by the I-V measurements at room temperature. Two strips of each metal were thermally evaporated on the surface of the film and measurements were first recorded in the dark and room light, then in the dark before and after annealing for A1, which was found to be the best in the set. Films with aluminum contacts gave the smallest resistivity, best ohmicity and they are slightly affected by light as required. On the other hand, copper was found to be the worst, and films with copper contacts gave the largest resistivity, worst ohmicity and they are the most affected by light. Annealing improved the aluminum contacts due to alloying and doping.
