Surgical management of uveitis-glaucoma-hyphema syndrome

AIM:To report outcomes of patients after intraocular lens(IOL)repositioning or exchange for the version of the uveitisglaucoma-hyphema(UGH)syndrome that does not include closed loop anterior chamber IOL(nUGH).MeTHODS:Chart review of patients with nUGH who underwent IOL repositioning or exchange by one surgeon were *** main outcome measures were best corrected visual acuity(BCVA)as a decimal fraction preoperatively and postoperatively after IOL repositioning or *** findings evaluated included the presence of uveitis,hyphema,elevated intraocular pressure(IOP),and other complications such as pigment dispersion or vitreous *** number of anti-inflammatory and glaucoma medications were assessed before and after IOL repositioning or ***:The study included 14 pseudophakic *** median time at the onset of contemporary UGH after cataract extraction and IOL implantation(Ce/IOL)was7.5 *** repositioning or exchange was performed at a mean duration of 8.1±4.7 mo(median:4 mo)after onset of *** mean BCVA was improved from 0.45±0.26 preoperatively after onset of UGH syndrome to 0.76±0.22(P=0.016)after IOL repositioning or *** the14 eyes,uveitis,elevated IOP,and hyphema were present preoperatively in 13,13,and 6 eyes,*** and hyphema resolved in all cases after IOL *** mean IOP was reduced from 26.4±4.5 mm Hg preoperatively to 14.7±4.9 postoperatively(P=0.01).The mean number of glaucoma medications used was reduced from 1.7±1.1 medications preoperatively to 0.8±1.08(P=0.04)***:IOL repositioning or exchange is an effective treatment in many cases for medically resistant contemporary UGH syndrome.

Investigating the impact of preoperative corneal astigmatism orientation on the postoperative spherical equivalent refraction following intraocular lens implantation

Background:To investigate the impact of the orientation of preoperative corneal astigmatism on achieving the postoperative target refraction following monofocal intraocular lens(IOL)***:This study enrolled 339 eyes who had uneventful cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange(RLe)with subsequent monofocal IOL *** were initially categorized dependent upon axial length and then on the orientation of preoperative anterior corneal *** 1 had against-the-rule(ATR)anterior corneal astigmatism,group 2 had with-the-rule(WTR)anterior corneal astigmatism,and group 3 had oblique(OB)anterior corneal *** preoperative corneal astigmatism was determined by the IOLMaster(Carl Zeiss Meditec AG).Postoperative refraction was completed for all eyes,and the results were calculated and compared for the separate ***:In eyes with axial lengths greater than 22.0 mm and less than 25.0 mm there was a significant difference between the magnitude of preoperative corneal astigmatism between groups 2 and 3 with 0.827±0.376 D in group 2,and 0.677±0.387 D in group *** mean postoperative spherical equivalent(Se)prediction error was−0.132±0.475 D in group 1,0.026±0.497 D in group 2,and−0.130±0.477 D in group *** was a significant difference between groups 1 and *** was no significant difference in the magnitude of preoperative corneal astigmatism and postoperative Se prediction error between the anterior corneal astigmatism orientation groups in eyes with axial lengths of less than or equal to 22.0 mm and greater than or equal to 25.0 ***:The orientation of preoperative anterior corneal astigmatism significantly affected the postoperative biometry prediction error in eyes with astigmatism of 1.75 D or less in eyes with the axial length between 22.0 mm and 25.0 ***,the results were not clinically significant.

effects of cowpea(Vigna unguiculata) root mucilage on microbial community response and capacity for phenanthrene remediation

Biodegradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons（PAHs） is normally limited by their low solubility and poor bioavailability. Prior research suggests that biosurfactants are synthesized as intermediates during the production of mucilage at the root tip. To date the effects of mucilage on PAH degradation and microbial community response have not been directly examined. To address this question, our research compared 3 cowpea breeding lines（Vigna unguiculata） that differed in mucilage production for their effects on phenanthrene（PHe） degradation in soil. The High Performance Liquid Chromatography results indicated that the highest PHe degradation rate was achieved in soils planted with mucilage producing cowpea line C1, inoculated with Bradyrhizobium, leading to 91.6% PHe disappearance in 5 weeks. In root printing tests, strings treated with mucilage and bacteria produced larger clearing zones than those produced on mucilage treated strings with no bacteria or bacteria inoculated strings. experiments with14C-PHe and purified mucilage in soil slurry confirmed that the root mucilage significantly enhanced PHe mineralization（82.7%）, which is 12% more than the control treatment without mucilage. The profiles of the PHe degraders generated by Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis suggested that cowpea C1, producing a high amount of root mucilage, selectively enriched the PHe degrading bacteria population in rhizosphere. These findings indicate that root mucilage may play a significant role in enhancing PHe degradation and suggests that differences in mucilage production may be an important criterion for selection of the best plant species for use in phytoremediation of PAH contaminated soils.

Social-ecological correlates of fundamental movement skills in young children

Purpose: To identify the social-ecological correlates associated with fundamental movement skills at the child, family, and environment levels in young ***: Preschool children from 4 Colorado Head Start/preschool centers were recruited from 2010 to 2012. Two hundred twenty-eight children(128 girls; age = 56.08 § 4.09 months; body mass index(BMI) z-score = 0.53 § 1.12(mean § SD); 42.1% Hispanic/Latino) and 159 families were included in the final analysis. Children's perceived competence and fundamental movement skills were assessed via the Pictorial Scale of Perceived Competence and Social Acceptance and the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency, 2 nd edition. Data on the number of children in the family, parent age, BMI, education, employment status, family income, perception of child coordination, and home physical activity environment were collected via a questionnaire. Linear regressions adjusted for child BMI, age, sex, and school site were performed at each ***: Child perceived cognitive competence was positively associated with locomotor skills(p = 0.04; adjusted R2= 0.035) and object-control skills(p = 0.003; adjusted R2= 0.083) at the child level. Parent education, BMI, and perception of child coordination were positively associated with locomotor skills and explained 8.8% of variance, but only parent education was significant(p = 0.04) at the family level. In addition, physical environment was positively associated with locomotor skills(p = 0.02) and explained 5.5% of variance at the environment ***: Social-ecological correlates associated with young children's fundamental movement skills are multidimensional and differ according to skill category at the child, family, and environment levels.

Distribution of Panama’s narrow-range trees:are there hot-spots?
