Urban Consumer Attitudes to Fresh Produce Safety in China

The objective of this study was to explain the determinants of the fresh vegetables purchase decision by Chinese urban consumers in Beijing including awareness and attitudes to food safety, and their willingness to pay （WTP） more for specific safety characteristics when buying fresh vegetables. The research rationale arises out of a history of food safety scares and scandals in China, and a national government response to promote quality assurance and safety through labelling. The primary hypothesis was that an understanding of food safety systems and product labelling, and trust in supply chain integrity would be key determinants in consumer willingness to purchase and pay more for safety assured vegetables. Based on a questionnaire survey of consumers in Beijing, the analysis found that the major factors underlying the purchase decision of fresh vegetables were product freshness, convenience and competitive price rather than assured product labelling. The decisions whether to purchase assurance-labelled vegetables and WTP more for chemical residue-free product were analysed by binomial and ordinal multinomial logit modelling respectively. It revealed a WTP moreof between 20% and 40%. Monthly household income was a key determinant of both quality assured product and WTP, together with degree of concern over residues, trust in retailer and assurance labels and place of purchase. The results suggest much still remains to be done to build trust though rigorous monitoring and enforcement of food safety standards to improve supply chain integrity and consumer confidence.

对目前超市生鲜蔬菜经营方式、供应途径及损耗原因的研究分析表明,超市蔬菜供应分为普通蔬菜供应链和无公害/有机蔬菜供应链两种模式。超市蔬菜的损耗主要分为由于生理、环境和微生物引起蔬菜新鲜度下降和腐烂变质所导致的自然损耗,以及由于员工操作和消费者挑选造成蔬菜损伤所导致的人为损耗,消费者挑选是人为损耗的主要原因。将食品科学与管理技术相结合,提出冷链保鲜和分类处理等措施可以降低自然损耗,有效的运营管理可以降低人为损耗。

A numerical simulation framework to address the problem of the interaction of moving and/or deformable slender object(s) within an incompressible fluid flow is proposed. In this work, the finite element method(FEM) for structural dynamics simulation is introduced in immersed boundary-lattice Boltzmann method(IB-LBM). The variant immersed boundary-lattice Boltzmann method proposed by Shu et *** referred, which satisfies the non-slip boundary condition well at the boundary point. In this framework, the fluid and solid domains are both encompassed by Cartesian uniform lattices. The deforming/moving objects are divided into several elements, which nodes are set as Lagrangian markers to track the boundary of structure in immersed boundary method. At each simulation step, by using the law of conservation of momentum at each Lagrangian boundary point, the loads acting on the structure in IB-LBM are obtained first. Then, the loads are used in structural kinetic equations to calculate the displacement and velocity of Lagrangian boundary point, which will be brought back into IB-LBM for the next iteration. Compared to other lattice Boltzmann–immersed boundary method proposed, which can only solve the specific fluid-structure interaction problems, the framework proposed in this article is more general because of its’ strong modeling capability by introducing FEM. Here, nonlinear FEM solver was developed to account for geometrical and material non-linearity of flexible objects. Four cases were used to validate capability of this framework. In the first case, we consider the laminar incompressible channel flow around a flexible filament clamped behind a rigid stationary cylinder which results in self-induced oscillations of the structure. The results agree very well with available data in the literature. The beating of tandem filaments induced by the fluidstructure interaction was investigated. Common cold sufferers frequently report sleep disruption during the symptomatic period of infections. We examined the effects of treatment with a topical aromatic pharmaceutical ointment (Vicks VapoRub?), on associated sleep disturbances. The effects of Vicks VapoRub? versus placebo (petrolatum ointment) on subjective and objective measured sleep parameters were assessed in an exploratory study of 100 common cold patients, in a randomized, single blind, controlled, two-arm, parallel design study. The primary efficacy variable was subjective sleep quality measured with the SQSQ (Subjective Quality of Sleep Questionnaire). Additional measures included, ease of falling asleep and depth of sleep (measured with a post-sleep Visual Analog Scale), total sleep time, sleep onset latency, activity score, percentage of sleep, sleep efficiency (measured with actigraphy and SQSQ) and sleep quality index measured with a modified Karolinska Sleep Diary (KSD). The primary endpoint, “How was the quality of your sleep last night?” showed a statistically significant difference in change from baseline in favour of VapoRub treatment (p = 0.0392) versus placebo. Positive effects of VapoRub versus placebo were also observed for “How refreshed did you feel upon waking up?” (p = 0.0122) (SQSQ), “Did you get enough sleep?” (p = 0.0036) (KSD), “How was it to get up?” (p = 0.0120) (KSD) and “Do you feel well-rested?” (p = 0.0125) (KSD). No statistically significant changes from baseline versus placebo were detected in the Actiwatch endpoints. Vicks VapoRub? when applied before retiring to bed can reduce subjective sleep disturbances during a common cold. The results of this exploratory study support the belief among patients that the use of VapoRub improves subjective sleep quality during common cold which was associated with more refreshing sleep.
