Ion dynamics into different pore size distributions in supercapacitors under compression

Compressing supercapacitor(SCs)electrode is essential for improving the energy storage characteristics and minimizing ions’distance travel,faradaic reactions,and overall ohmic resistance.Studies comprising the ion dynamics in SC electrodes under compression are still rare.So,the ionic dynamics of five aqueous electrolytes in electrodes under compression were studied in this work for tracking electrochemical and structural changes under mechanical stress.A superionic state is formed when the electrode is compressed until the micropores match the dimensions with the electrolyte’s hydrated ion sizes,which increases the capacitance.If excessive compression is applied,the accessible pore regions decrease,and the capacitance drops.Hence,as the studied hydrated ions have different dimensions,the match between ion/pore sizes differs.To the LiOH and NaClO4electrolytes,increasing the pressure from 60 to 120 and 100 PSI raised the capacitance from 13.5 to 35.2 F g^(-1)and 30.9 to 39.0 F g^(-1),respectively.So,the KOH electrolyte with the lowest and LiCl with the biggest combination of hydrated ion size have their point of maximum capacitance(39.5 and 36.7F g^(-1))achieved at 140 and 80 PSI,respectively.To LiCl and KCl electrolytes,overcompression causes a drop in capacitance higher than 23%.

Portland Cement Mortar Composite with Partial Sand Replacement by Eggshell Particles

Agro-industrial activities generate a large amount of wastes. According to their specific properties, most of them can partially replace mineral aggregates, aiming to produce non-structural cement composites. In this research work, the behavior of a Portland cement mortar with partial replacement of sand by treated eggshell particles (0% to 66%) has been evaluated. Firstly, chemical compatibility between eggshell particles and Portland cement was carried by hydration curves. In a second step, a mixture of cement mortar based on treated eggshell (cold water, warm water and oven-dry) was prepared. Composite hardening was monitored by an ultrasound technique. At initial ages, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) along the time was sensitivity enough to detect the sand-to-eggshell ratio effect. Compressive strength at 28 days ranged from 23 to 9 MPa depending on sand to eggshell particles ratio, which indicated that the composite was suitable for non-bearing structures, mainly at rural areas.

Artificial intelligence(AI)is a branch of computer science that develops intelligent machines.In recent years,medicine has been contemplated with this recent modality to aid in the diagnosis of diseases in several specialties,including gastroenterology and gastrointestinal endoscopy.This new technology has superior ability to perform tasks mimicking human behavior and can identify possible pathological alterations,such as pre-malignant lesions and dysplasia,precursor lesions of colorectal cancer(CRC),and support medical decisionmaking.CRC is among the three most prevalent cancer types,and the second most common cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide;in addition,it is a leading cause of death in patients with inflammatory bowel disease(IBD).Patients with IBD tend to have greater inflammatory cell activity in the intestinal mucosa,which can favor cell proliferation and CRC development.AI can contribute to the detection of pre-neoplastic lesions in patients at risk of CRC development,such as those with extensive IBD or when additional CRC risk factors,such as smoking,are present.In fact,AI systems could improve all aspects of care related to both the detection of pre-malignant and malignant lesions and the screening of patients with IBD.In this review,we aimed to show the benefits and innovations of AI in the screening of CRC in patients with IBD.The promising applications of AI have the potential to revolutionize clinical practice and gastrointestinal endoscopy,especially in at-risk patients,such as those with IBD.

MicroRNAs(miRNAs)are non-coding RNA molecules composed of 19–25 nucleotides that regulate gene expression and play a central role in the regulation of several immune-mediated disorders,including inflammatory bowel diseases(IBD).IBD,represented by ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease,is characterized by chronic intestinal inflammation associated with an increased risk of colorectal cancer(CRC).CRC is one of the most prevalent tumors in the world,and its main risk factors are obesity,physical inactivity,smoking,alcoholism,advanced age,and some eating habits,in addition to chronic intestinal inflammatory processes and the use of immunosuppressants administered to IBD patients.Recent studies have identified miRNAs associated with an increased risk of developing CRC in this population.The identification of miRNAs involved in this tumorigenic process could be useful to stratify cancer risk development for patients with IBD and to monitor and assess prognosis.Thus,the present review aimed to summarize the role of miRNAs as biomarkers for the diagnosis and prognosis of IBD-associated CRC.In the future,therapies based on miRNA modulation could be used both in clinical practice to achieve remission of the disease and restore the quality of life for patients with IBD,and to identify the patients with IBD at high risk for tumor development.

Portland Cement-Residues-Polymers Composites and Its Application to the Hollow Blocks Manufacturing

Agricultural wastes and sawdust combined with cement matrix in the manufacture of building elements has been practiced with success in developed countries. In this study, sawdust from wood species (Pinus caribaea and Eucalyptus grandis) and an agricultural waste—rice husk (Oriza sativa) were combined with Portland cement type V (high initial strength), modified by polymer styrene-butadiene (SBR) addition. Hollow blocks produced with Eucalyptus grandis and rice husk residues showed better compressive strength;however, those produced with residues derived from Pinus caribaea presented non-satisfactory results, due to the particle size that was used.

Heart failure as an adverse effect of infliximab for Crohn's disease: A case report and review of the literature

BACKGROUND Anti-tumor necrosis factor agents were the first biologic therapy approved for the management of Crohn's disease(CD).Heart failure(HF)is a rare but potential adverse effect of these medications.The objective of this report is to describe a patient with CD who developed HF after the use of infliximab.CASE SUMMARY A 50-year-old woman with a history of hypertension and diabetes presented with abdominal pain,diarrhea,and weight loss.Colonoscopy and enterotomography showed ulcerations,areas of stenosis and dilation in the terminal ileum,and thickening of the intestinal wall.The patient underwent ileocolectomy and the surgical specimen confirmed the diagnosis of stenosing CD.The patient started infliximab and azathioprine treatment to prevent post-surgical recurrence.At 6 mo after initiating infliximab therapy,the patient complained of dyspnea,orthopnea,and paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea that gradually worsened.Echocardiography revealed biventricular dysfunction,moderate cardiac insufficiency,an ejection fraction of 36%,and moderate pericardial effusion,consistent with HF.The cardiac disease was considered an infliximab adverse effect and the drug was discontinued.The patient received treatment with diuretics for HF and showed improvement of symptoms and cardiac function.Currently,the patient is using anti-interleukin for CD and is asymptomatic.CONCLUSION This reported case supports the need to investigate risk factors for HF in inflammatory bowel disease patients and to consider the risk-benefit of introducing infliximab therapy in such patients presenting with HF risk factors.

This paper is aimed at promoting a reflection on architect Antoni Gaudí’s experimental method in the search for understanding the definition of the forms,structures,and constructive techniques applied by him in his various works,as in his processes of experimentation and formal modeling.In his legacy in the field of civil construction,we can highlight the development of the funicular method,known by the structural analysis and definition methodology that allows,in an original way,for the creation of the base geometry of his constructive elements through the association of traction experiments to their deformations and loads along their structure.In the field of architecture and civil engineering,the study of constructive techniques based on basic concepts of descriptive geometry and experimentation is of great importance in the field of digital technologies,as it enables the advancement of structural efficiency and plasticity,reinforced by the form-finding parametric modeling method currently.Therefore,to establish a parallel between the formal analysis worked by the Catalan architect and the current approaches of digital modeling,two of his works,Templo Expiatorio de la Sagrada Familia and Iglesia de la Colònia Guell,will be highlighted,which will be studied for their technical and formal effectiveness with the aid of parametric modeling programs.

Acute cholestatic hepatitis caused by amoxicillin/ clavulanate

Amoxicillin/clavulanate is a synthetic penicillin that is currently commonly used,especially for the treatment of respiratory and cutaneous infections.In general,it is a well-tolerated oral antibiotic.However,amoxicillin/clavulanate can cause adverse effects,mainly cutaneous,gastrointestinal,hepatic and hematologic,in some cases.Presented here is a case report of a 63-yearold male patient who developed cholestatic hepatitis after recent use of amoxicillin/clavulanate.After 6 wk of prolonged use of the drug,he began to show signs of cholestatic icterus and developed severe hyperbilirubinemia(total bilirubin>300 mg/L).Diagnostic investigation was conducted by ultrasonography of the upper abdomen,serum tests for infection history,laboratory screening of autoimmune diseases,nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)of the abdomen with bile duct-NMR and transcutaneous liver biopsy guided by ultrasound.The duration of disease was approximately 4 mo,with complete resolution of symptoms and laboratory changes at the end of that time period.Specific treatment was not instituted,only a combination of anti-emetic(metoclopramide)and cholestyramine for pruritus.

Candida albicans isolated from urine:Phenotypic and molecular identification,virulence factors and antifungal susceptibility

Objective: To isolate Candida albicans(C. albicans) from the urine of hospitalized patients and assess the virulence factors and antifungal susceptibility profiles of the isolates.Methods: Yeasts were identified using the chromogenic medium CHROMagar?, the VITEK~?2 system, hypertonic Sabouraud broth, tobacco agar, polymerase chain reaction,and DNA sequencing. The evaluated virulence factors were proteinase production,phospholipase production, and biofilm production on polystyrene. The broth microdilution technique was used to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration.Results: All yeasts isolated from urine were identified as C. albicans using both classical and molecular methods. Although 91.3% of the isolates showed no phospholipase activity, 56.5% showed strong proteinase activity and 91.7% produced biofilm. All microorganisms were sensitive to fluconazole, voriconazole and amphotericin B, but 56.5% of the yeasts showed resistance to itraconazole.Conclusions: C. albicans isolates from urine have a high capacity for virulence and can be associated with infectious processes. Furthermore, the high percentage of isolates resistant to itraconazole is important because this antifungal agent is commonly used to treat fungal infections in the hospital environment.

The Impact of a Real-Life Inflammatory Bowel Disease Education Course for Brazilian Physicians from the Perspective of Its Participants

Background: Physicians must acquire the necessary skills to provide Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) patients with state-of-the-art clinical care, aiming to improve patient’s quality of life and disease outcomes. Purpose: To describe the queries and experiences of doctors enrolled in an IBD education course and to evaluate the impact of the course. Methods: A retrospective study included 100 physicians, of which 78 attended the course. A questionnaire was applied evaluating how the course had an impact on their IBD-knowledge. The 20-hour-course consisted of practical “real-life” activities and theoretical discussions. Results: The majority of doctors’ expertise was in gastroenterology (53%) and coloproctology (44%). A significant portion had no experience with biological therapy for ulcerative colitis (19.4%) or Crohn’s disease (5.05%). The main topics doctors wanted to discuss were biological therapy (93%), new drugs (74%) and differential diagnosis (64%). A considerable number of physicians did not feel confident at prescribing biological therapy before the course (44.4%), a percentage that decreased to 8.5% after the course (p Discussion: The ideal course should have a practical and theoretical component, as well as the support of an experienced multidisciplinary team. A real-life practical-theoretical IBD course proved a success at increasing IBD knowledge.
