We report on the bromatological profile,the preliminary phytochemical composition,the antioxidant capacity,and the in vitro neuroprotective effects of Blackberry Jam *** were the major macronutrients(20 g/100 g)in both pulp and seeds(36.5 g/100g),that also possess a low lipid content(0.1 g/100 g and 0.7 g/100,and 86 Kcal/100 g,respectively).Eleven compounds including a diterpenoid dimmer,a lactone,coumarins,sphingosines,and flavonoids have been identified for the first time in the pulp and seeds of *** by mass *** electrochemical index of the hydroalcoholic extract of the pulp(BJFp respectively)and an appreciable energy value(89 Kcal/100 g)was around 6.8μA/V and two reversible cathode peaks were observed up to 0.5 V,thus shedding light to its antioxidant capacity,which was also evidenced by the DPPH•and ABTS+radical scavenging assays(IC50 of 3.30±0.23μg/mL and 18.17±1.21μg/mL,respectively).The BJFp protected against oxidative stress in vitro by significantly decreasing both the lipid peroxidation and contents of carbonyl proteins in a dose-dependent manner in murine brain cells treated with ***,the BJFp increased the superoxide dismutase(EC50 of 11.99±0.35μg/mL)and catalase(EC50 of 69.53±0.43μg/mL)*** BJFp markedly decreased both the in vitro acetylcholinesterase(IC50 of 227.9±0.34μg/mL)and butyrylcholinesterase(IC50 of 8.77±0.40μg/mL)***,besides being a great source of energy,this Amazon superfruit may be promising for enhancing the treatment outcomes of ailments related to oxidative stress,which require further in vivo investigation.

Wood density and carbon concentration of coarse woody debris in native forests,Brazil

Background: With the objective of increasing knowledge on biomass and carbon stocks, and thus improving the accuracy of published estimates, the present study explored wood density and carbon concentration of coarse woody debris (diameter≥10) by decay class in a Seasonal Semi-deciduous Forest (SSF) area in the Atlantic Rain Forest and in a Cerrado sensu-stricto (CSS) area (Brazilian savanna), in Brazil. Two strata were identified in each area and ten sampling units were systematic located in each stratum. Data were collected according to the line intersect sampling method. Each tallied element, the diameter, length, and perpendicular width were recorded at the transect intersection point. Each element was classified into a decay class, and the species was identified when possible. Sample discs were cut from each element, from which cylindrical samples were extracted and oven-dried to determine density. These cylinders were milled and analyzed using a LECO-C632 to determine carbon concentration as percentage of mass. Results: In both areas, wood density decreased as the decay class increased. For SSF the mean carbon concentration of all analyzed samples was 49.8% with a standard deviation of 3.3, with a range of 27.9–57.0% across 506 observations. For CSS the general mean was 49.6% with a standard deviation of 2.6, with a range of 31.2–54.5% over 182 observations. Carbon concentration barely change between decay classes. Carbon stock was estimated at 3.3 and 0.7 MgC/ha for the SSF and the CSS, respectively. Similar results were obtained when using a 50% conversion constant. Conclusions: The present study concludes that wood density decreases as the woody debris becomes more decomposed, a pattern found in many previous studies. The carbon concentration, however, barely changes between decay classes, and that result is consistent with most of the literature reviewed. Numerical Study on the Effect of Submerged Depth on the Horizontal Plate Wave Energy Converter

The growing search for clean and renewable energy sources has given rise to the studies of exploring sea wave energy. This paper is concerned with the numerical evaluation of the main operational principle of a submerged plate employed for the conversion of wave energy into electrical one. The numerical model used to solve the conservation equations of mass, momentum and transport of volume fraction is based on the finite volume method （FVM）. In order to tackle with the flow of mixture of air-water and its interaction with the device, the multiphase model volume of fluid （VOF） is employed. The purpose of this study is the evaluation of a numerical model for improvement of the knowledge about the submerged plate wave energy converter, as well as the investigation of the effect of the distance from the plate to the bottom of the sea （HP） on the performance of the converter. The simulations for several distances of the plate from the seabed show that the optimal efficiency is 64%, which is obtained for HP=0.53 m （88% of the depth）. This efficiency is 17% larger than that found in the worst case （HP=0.46 m, 77% of the depth）.

AIM To evaluate the effects of melatonin(Mel) on oxidative stress in an experimental model of bile duct ligation(BDL).METHODS Male Wistar rats(n = 32, weight ± 300 g) were allocated across four groups: CO(sham BDL), BDL(BDL surgery), CO + Mel(sham BDL and Mel administration) and BDL + Mel(BDL surgery and Mel administration). Mel was administered intraperitoneally for 2 wk, starting on postoperative day 15, at a dose of 20 mg/*** Mel was effective at the different standards, reestablishing normal liver enzyme levels, reducing the hepatosomatic and splenosomatic indices, restoring lipoperoxidation and antioxidant enzyme concentrations, reducing fibrosis and inflammation, and thereby reducing liver tissue injury in the treated *** The results of this study suggest a protective effect of Mel when administered to rats with secondary biliary cirrhosis induced by BDL.

Assessing Cleaner Energy Alternatives for Bus Transit in Rio de Janeiro:A Life Cycle Inventory Analysis

From 2003 to 2009 in Brazilian municipalities of over 60,000 inhabitants, buses accounted for more than 25% of urban trips. This trend is not expected to change in the medium term. Worldwide, buses rely on petroleum diesel as fuel. In Brazil, alternative fuels such as biodiesel, natural gas and ethanol are available and the choice among them should depend on the assessment of the entire life cycle of such fuels. This paper uses a Life Cycle Inventory, which is essential to the implementation of a Life Cycle Assessment, to assess six energy alternatives: petroleum diesel, biodiesel, petroleum diesel with 5% of biodiesel, compressed natural gas, additivated hydrous ethanol and dual-fuel system composed by petroleum diesel with 5% of biodiesel and compressed natural gas. In saving total energy consumption, pure petroleum diesel or mixed with 5% biodiesel and dual-fuel systems stand out, in that order. If renewable energy use and net carbon dioxide emissions reduction are the goals, ethanol and biodiesel should be given preference. The addition of 5% of biodiesel in petroleum diesel increases the share of renewable energy in the supply chain of petroleum diesel by 47.5% with an increase of 0.58% in total energy consumption and a reduction of 3.8% in net CO2 emissions during the life cycle. In the case of biodiesel, the addition of 5% of biodiesel in petroleum diesel increases the share of renewable energy in the supply chain by 51.15% with an increase of 0.03% in the total energy consumption and a decrease of 7% in net CO2 emissions in the life cycle. The use of 5% of biodiesel in petroleum diesel does not significantly affect the use of renewable energy (+0.69%) or total energy consumption (+0.04%) in ethanol supply chain, which already shows a great use of renewable energy input. However, a decrease of 9.29% in the net CO2 emissions in the supply chain occurs, which reaches 5.28% in the life cycle.

Optical neuroimaging of executive function impairments in food addiction

This study investigated the neural mechanisms located in the prefrontal cortex(PFC)involved in maintaining addictive-like eating ***,we aimed toll a gap in the existing literature and help clarify the food addiction(FA)cycle by inspecting the relationship between the executive control and psychopathology involved in the FA ***-three students recruited from the University of Macao participated in this *** investigated a hemodynamic response captured by NIRS recordings,activated during n-back,set-shifting,and go/nogo ***,we investigated the FA symptoms through the YFAS clinical inventory to better understand the relationship between hemodynamic response and clinical symptomatology in college ***,the hemodynamicndings conrm that altered cognitive control in executive function performance appears to be linked to addictive-like eating behaviors,which in turn conrms a circuit similarity between FA and the substance abuse population(SUD)as reported in previous fMRI ***,the psychologicalndings conrm the signicant association between the working memory decits and symptoms severity which suggest the role of self-control and regulation in limiting the storage resources as a potential trigger to develop overconsumption episodes in the FA *** highlight how disrupted self-control and regulation of craving and negative a®ect induced by mental imagery might shape and overload the working memory storage as a potential trigger to develop binge eating episodes to maintain the FA *** conclusion,the use of fNIRS in the context of eating disorders studies represents a valuable application,noninvasive,and patientfriendly tool,providing new insights into understanding the addiction cycle and treatment guidelines.

The increase of the fuel burning area required by most practical combustion processes in order to guarantee the minimum energy density rate release for their start up and operation is normally achieved by the proper choice among several existing types of atomizers. For instance, impinging and multi-impinging jets atomizers are used in rocket combustion chambers, while splash-plate atomizers find their use when wall film cooling is required. Pressure swirl atomizers, either of simplex or duplex kind, along with Y-Jet or Spider Jet atomizers are used in industrial applications and in turbine combustion chambers. Notice, however, that all the types of atomizing devices listed above have one point in common: they are of pre-filming kind, i.e., before the droplet spray is generated, a liquid film is formed. This liquid film is broken into unstable ligaments which contract under the action of surface tension forming the droplets. Once the film thickness is estimated, the droplets’ SMD (Sauter Mean Diameter) can be calculated, yielding a crucial parameter for the combustion chamber design. However, although this mechanism of droplet formation has been under study for several decades, most of the available results, are based upon experimental data, valid for a special type of atomizer under the given specific conditions only. This work offers a generalized theory for theoretically estimating the SMD of sprays generated by liquid pre-filming atomizers in general.

N-acetylcysteine modulates angiogenesis and vasodilation in stomach such as DNA damage in blood of portal hypertensive rats

AIM: To evaluate the antioxidant effect of N-acetylcysteine(NAC) on the stomach of rats with portal ***: Twenty-four male Wistar rats weighing ± 250 g were divided into four experimental groups(n =6 each): Sham-operated(SO),SO + NAC,partial portal vein ligation(PPVL),and PPVL + NAC. Treatment with NAC in a dose of 10 mg/kg(i.p.) diluted in 0.6 m L of saline solution was administered daily for 7 d starting 8 d after the surgery. Animals from the PPVL and SO group received saline solution(0.6 m L) for the same period of time as the PPVL + NAC and SO + NAC group. On the 15 th day the animals were anesthetized and we evaluated portal pressure by cannulating mesenteric artery. After,we removed the stomach for further analysis. We performed immunohistochemical analysis for endothelial nitric oxide synthase(e NOS),vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF),and nitrotirosine(NTT) proteins in stomach. We also evaluated e NOS and VEGF by Western blot analysis and assessed DNA damage in blood samples by the comet ***: The portal hypertension group exhibited increases in portal pressure when compared to SO group(29.8 ± 1.8 vs 12.0 ± 0.3 mm Hg)(P < 0.001). The same was observed when we compared the e NOS(56.8 ± 3.7 vs 13.46 ± 2.8 pixels)(P < 0.001),VEGF(34.9 ± 4.7 vs 17.46 ± 2.6 pixels)(P < 0.05),and NTT(39.01 ± 4.0 vs 12.77 ± 2.3 pixels)(P < 0.05) expression by immunohistochemistry of the PPVL animals with the SO group. The expression of e NOS(0.39 ± 0.03 vs 0.25 ± 0.03 a.μ)(P < 0.01) and VEGF(0.38 ± 0.04 vs 0.26 ± 0.04 a.μ)(P < 0.01) were also evaluated by Western blot analysis,and we observed an increase of both proteins on PPVL animals. We also evaluated the DNA damage by comet assay,and observed an increase on damage index and damage frequency on those animals. NAC decreased portal pressure values in PPVL + NAC animals(16.46 ± 2 vs 29.8 ± 1.8 mm Hg)(P < 0.001) when compared to PPVL. The expression of e NOS(14.60 ± 4.1 vs 56.8 ± 3.7 pixels)(P < 0.001
