Existing therapies for the treatment of chronic heart failure still have some limitations and there is a pressing need for the development of new therapeutic modalities. The amniotic membrane has been used for the treatment of various diseases, such as conjunctive defects;however, the mechanisms behind its repair functions are still unclear. Regenerative medicine is seeking newer alternatives and among them, biomaterials have emerged in recent years for developing and manipulating molecules, cells, tissues or organs grown in laboratories in order to replace human body parts. Many such materials have been used for this purpose, either synthetically or biologically, in order to provide new medical devices. This review provides a wider view of the regeneration potential of the use of amniotic membrane as a potential biomaterial to facilitate the implementation of new research in surgical procedures. Amniotic membrane appears to be an alternative source of stem cells as well as an excellent biomaterial for cell-based therapeutic applications in engineering heart tissue.

In general, esterification reactions are favored by the increase in reaction temperature, excess of one of the reactants (usually alcohol), and additions of acid or basis catalysts. Esterification of oleic acid with methanol catalyzed by Nb2O5·nH2O calcined at different temperatures showed good conversion rates, especially at reaction temperature of 100°C and higher catalyst proportions. PLS calibration showed good results for predicting the amounts of methyl oleate in reaction products.

Listening to music, or part of it, may stir the memory of a past moment, along with its associated emotions, such occurrences are known as autobiographical memories. Electroencephalographic (EEG) studies have shown alterations in memory recall and musical processing. However, no research was found showing a relation among music, autobiographical memories and associated emotions. The purpose of this study was to identify cortical areas involved in the evocation of autobiographical memory (associated with positive and negative events) mediated by musical stimuli. For that, gamma rhythm was analyzed through EEG recordings performed by 45 male volunteers while they were submitted to two stimuli: 1) the music capable of recalling memories associated to a positive event;2) the music capable of evoking memories associated to a negative event. Gamma band analysis was used in search of greater brain electrical activity. As results, researchers observed increased activity in right brain hemisphere during the musical processing, besides its hypoactivation when volunteers were submitted to musical stimuli related to memories of negative events.

Assessment of Genetic Diversity in Contrasting Sugarcane Varieties Using Inter-Simple Sequence Repeat (ISSR) Markers

Sugarcane is an important tropical crop, responsible for two thirds of the world sugar production, gaining actually importance as a source of biofuel. Drought tolerance is a very important feature considering the actual climate change scenario throughout the world. This study aimed to determine the genetic diversity between sugarcane varieties with contrasting features under drought. For this purpose, twelve ISSR primers were used to characterize nine sugarcane varieties under cultivation in different countries including selected drought resistant material from Northeast Brazil and two varieties from India as contrasting genotypes. 317 scorable bands were generated, among which 301 comprised polymorphic markers, with an average of 25 polymorphic bands per primer. In the generated dendrogram the accessions were placed in clusters, where cluster A included two varieties from India (Co331 and Co419), and B comprised plants eight Brazilian accessions and a ‘Barbado’ variety. Within this clade, drought tolerant and susceptible varieties were clearly separated. The present evaluation revealed important contrasting parental candidates regarding their drought response, very promising for future mapping approaches aiming the identification of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) associated to drought in sugarcane. The selected primers were used for the first time in sugarcane, representing valuable tools for future evaluations, with emphasis to diversity characterization and genetic mapping.

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of the crossing method of point selection associated with the effects of external application of different substances listed as Chinese Materia ***: A total of 127 patients were recruited from EBRAMEC's regular ambulatory clinic after reading and signing the consenting *** subjects were divided in a randomized way into 4 different groups: A: Fuzi(Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata) 34; B: Baijiezi(Semen Sinapis) 31; C: Yanhusuo(Corydalis Rhizome) 38; D: control group with regular rice(Oryza Sativa) *** acupoints were selected using the crossing method, where points in one side of the body are used for the other side, based on these associations: shoulder-hip, elbow-knee, wrist-ankle, and *** selection of the acupoints, a piece of the Chinese Materia Medica according to each group was pressed and taped on the *** patient was evaluated by the Visual Analog Scale(VAS) before and after the ***: All subjects presented a better evaluation after treatment compared to before treatment, including control *** treatment groups presented significant improvement on *** statistic analysis showed that immediate improvement efficacy of each was as follows: A: 51.52%, B: 72.63%, C: 62.08% and D: 54.47%.Conclusion: Based on the results we can conclude that the classical crossing method for selecting acupoints is *** external application of Chinese Materia Medica on acupoints is a valid and efficient therapy and Baijiezi presented to be the most efficient one on this *** strongly suggest that larger studies with better methods should be conducted.

Chagas cardiomyopathy still remains a challenging problem that is responsible for high morbidity and mortality in Central and Latin America. Chagas disease disrupts blood microcirculation via various autoimmune mechanisms, causing loss of cardiomyocytes and severe impairment of heart function. Different cell types and delivery approaches in Chagas Disease have been studied in both preclinical models and clinical trials. The main objective of this article is to clarify the reasons why the benefits that have been seen with cell therapy in preclinical models fail to translate to the clinical setting. This can be explained by crucial differences between the cellular types and pathophysiological mechanisms of the disease, as well as the differences between human patients and animal models. We discuss examples that demonstrate how the results from preclinical trials might have overestimated the efficacy of myocardial regeneration therapies. Future research should focus, not only on studying the best cell type to use but, very importantly, understanding the levels of safety and cellular interaction that can elicit efficient therapeutic effects in human tissue. Addressing the challenges associated with future research may ensure the success of stem cell therapy in improving preclinical models and the treatment of Chagas disease.
