Background Asthma is a significant chronic health problem worldwide. Management aims at disease control by reducing functional impairment and exacerbations and improving quality of life (QoL). We report a multi-center study to survey asthma control and QoL in four cities in the Pearl River Delta. Methods The conjoint survey involved ten Hong Kong pediatric hospitals/units, two Shenzhen hospitals, two Macao hos-pitals, and two Guangzhou hospitals on asthma control (using Asthma Control Test) and QoL (Pediatric Allergic Disease Quality of Life Questionnaire, PADQLQ). Acceptability of a treatment is graded as very good/good/fair/poor. Results Good asthma control was only reported in 80% subjects in Hong Kong, but higher in sister cities (85–94%, P<0.001). Allergic rhinitis, 'incense burning', and 'smoker in family' were prevalent among the four cities. Logistic regres-sion showed better control of asthma was associated with better PADQLQ (B=?0.029, P < 0.001), better acceptability of bronchodilator (B=?1.488, P = 0.025), negatively with 'smoker in family' (B=?0.83, P = 0.015) and various PADQLQ domains. Conversely, worse PADQLQ was associated with allergic rhinitis severity (B=4.77, P <0.001), poor control of asthma (B=7.56, P <0.001), increased frequency of traditional Chinese medicine use (B=1.7, P < 0.05), increased fre-quency of bronchodilator usage (B=1.05, P < 0.05), 'smoker in family' (B=4.05, P < 0.05), and incense burning at home (B=3.9, P < 0.05). Conclusions There are some clinical and cultural differences among the four southern Chinese cities within the Guangdong province. This study identifies potentially modifiable environmental and treatment factors associated with poor asthma control and QoL for health-care interventions. Having a smoker in the family is independently associated with poor asthma control and QoL.

Objective:Delivery of chemotherapeutic drugs to the brain has remained a major obstacle in the treatment of glioma,owing to the presence of the blood-brain barrier and the activity of P-gp,which pumps its substrate back into the systemic *** aim of the present study was to develop an intravenous formulation of HM30181 A(HM)to inhibit P-gp in the brain to effectively deliver paclitaxel(PTX)for the treatment of malignant ***:Two formulations of solubilized HM were designed on the basis of different solid dispersion strategies:i)spray-drying[polyvinlypyrrolidone(PVP)-HM]and ii)solvent evaporation[HP-β-cyclodextrin(cyclodextrin)-HM].The P-gp inhibition of these 2 formulations was assessed on the basis of rhodamine 123 uptake in cancer *** and brain pharmacokinetic parameters were also determined,and the antitumor effect of cyclodextrin-HM with PTX was evaluated in an orthotopic glioma xenograft mouse ***:Although both PVP-HM and cyclodextrin-HM formulations showed promising P-gp inhibition activity in vitro,cyclodextrin-HM had a higher maximum tolerated dose in mice than did *** study of cyclodextrin-HM revealed a plasma concentration plateau at 20 mg/kg,and the mice began to lose weight at doses above this ***-HM(10 mg/kg)administered with PTX at 10 mg/kg showed optimal antitumor activity in a mouse model,according to both tumor volume measurement and survival time(P<0.05).Conclusions:In a mouse orthotopic brain tumor model,the intravenous co-administration of cyclodextrin-HM with PTX showed potent antitumor effects and therefore may have potential for glioma therapy in humans.

The widely adoption of Electric Vehicle (EV) has been identified as a major challenge for future development of smart grids. The ever increasing electric vehicle charging further increases the energy demand. This paper reports the development of an Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) as an effective tool to reshape the load profile of EV charging by adopting appropriate demand side management strategy. This paper presents a total solution for EV charging service platform (EVAMI) based on power line and internet communication. It must be stressed that the development of Third Party Customer Service Platform in this investigation facilitates a single bill to be issued to EV owners. Hence, EV owners understand their energy usage and thus may perform energy saving activity efficiently. Experiment and evaluation of the proposed system show that the throughput achieved is about 5 Mbps at 10 ms end to end delay in Power line Communication. By introducing two dimensional dynamic pricing and charging schedule, the proposed EVAMI successfully reduces 36% peak consumption and increases the “off peak” consumption by 54%. Therefore the EVAMI does not only reduce the peak consumption but also relocates the energy demand effectively.
