Effect of Gd addition on the superconducting properties of Ti-based V, Nb, Ta alloys

The critical current density(Jc)of the body centered cubic(bcc)V0.6Ti0.4 alloy enhances significantly after the addition of rare earth Gd as the latter is immiscible in the matrix[S.Paul,et.al,IEEE Trans.Appl.Supercond.31,5(2021)].Very low solubility of Gd in other bcc elements like Ta and Nb is also well known[Jr.KA Gschneidner in Prog Sci Technol Rare Earths,vol.1,pp.222–258,1964&M Neuberger,et.al in Handbook of Electronic Materials,Vol 4,1972].We use these facts to find the effect of adding 1 at.%Gd into the Nb0.6Ti0.4 and Ta0.4Ti0.6 alloys on the superconducting properties e.g.,the transition temperature(Tc),Jc,flux pinning force density(Fp)and the microstructure.In spite of Gd being ferromagnetic,the Tc in these alloys change only marginally(increase by 0.3 K in Ta0.4Ti0.6 and decrease by 0.15 K in Nb0.6Ti0.4 after Gd addition.The Jc(H?1 T,T=4 K)increases by 5 and 1.5 times respectively in the Gd containing Nb0.6Ti0.4 and Ta0.4Ti0.6 alloys,which is quite small as compared to the increase observed in the V0.6Ti0.4(20 times)system.With Gd addition,the grain size reduces approximately by 65%and 10%respectively in Nb0.6Ti0.4 and Ta0.4Ti0.6.Our analysis indicates that grain boundaries are the major flux line pinning centres in these alloys and the role of Gd in increasing the Jc depends on the effectiveness of Gd in reducing the grain size.The grain boundary density depends strongly on the distribution of Gd precipitates,which is quite different from each other for two alloy systems under study.Moreover,our results suggest that the addition of Gd to commercial Nb‐Ti(Nb0.37Ti0.63)alloy is a new promising route for achieving higher Jc values.

Comparative and quantitative analysis of antioxidant and scavenging potential of Indigofera tinctoria Linn. extracts

OBJECTIVE：To compare and elucidate the antioxidant effi cacy of ethanolic and hydroethanolic extracts of Indigofera tinctoria Linn.（Fabaceae family）.METHODS：Various in-vitro antioxidant assays and free radical-scavenging assays were done.Quantitative measurements of various phytoconstituents,reductive abilities and chelating potential were carried out along with standard compounds.Half inhibitory concentration（IC50）values for ethanol and hydroethanol extracts were analyzed and compared with respective standards.RESULTS：Hydroethanolic extracts showed considerably more potent antioxidant activity in comparison to ethanol extracts.Hydroethanolic extracts had lower IC50values than ethanol extracts in the case of DPPH,metal chelation and hydroxyl radical-scavenging capacity（829,659 and 26.7μg/m L）but had slightly higher values than ethanol in case of SO2-and NO2-scavenging activity（P〈0.001 vs standard）.Quantitative measurements also showed that the abundance of phenolic and fl avonoid bioactive phytoconstituents were signifi cantly（P〈0.001）greater in hydroethanol extracts（212.920 and 149.770 mg GAE and rutin/g of plant extract respectively）than in ethanol extracts（211.691 and 132.603 mg GAE and rutin/g of plant extract respectively）.K arl Pearson’s co rrelation analysis（r2）between various antioxidant parameters and bioactive components also associated the antioxidant potential of I.tinctoria with various phytoconstituents,especially phenolics,fl avonoids,saponins and tannins.CONCLUSION：This study may be helpful to draw the attention of researchers towards the hydroethanol extracts of I.tinctoria,which has a high yield,and great prospects in herbal industries to produce inexpensive and powerful herbal products.

Development of a sandwich ELISA for the detection of bovine herpesvirus type 1

Objective:To develop a standard enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay（ELJSA） for the detection of bovine herpesvirus type 1（BHV-1）.Methods:The assay was based on hyperimmune rabbit and guinea pig antisera raised against purified BHV-1.Polyethylene glycol precipitation and sucrose density gradient methods were adopted for viral concentration and purification.Antisera were raised using Freund’s adjuvant followed by extraction of IgG of high purity.Results: Optimum antisera dilutions as determined by titrations were chosen as 14 000,whereas the conjugate was used at 1:2 000 dilution.Using 95 clinical specimens,the ELISA test showed a sensitivity and specificity of 91.90%and 93.10%,respectively when compared to PCR.The cutoff value was fixed at 0.15490) and a P/N ratio of>1.30 indicated a significant positive reaction. Conclusions:The results have demonstrated that this ELISA could efficiently detect BHV-1 and can be used as an important diagnostic tool.

Ultrasonographic assessment of paediatric ocular emergencies： A tertiary eye hospital based observation

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study is to assess the utility of ocular ultrasound B scan in the emergency at the fi rst point of care for detecting posterior segment and orbital pathologies in cases of paediatric ocular emergencies.METHODS: A prospective observational study involving 122 paediatric patients presenting to eye emergency over a period of ninety days were assessed with ultrasonography for the posterior segment as well as orbital pathology whenever indicated. The ocular ultrasound was performed gently over closed eyelids.RESULTS: Posttraumatic globe injuries were the most common indication for posterior segment evaluation, which constituted 80(65.57%) eyes. Among these 52 patients had an anechoic posterior segment and 28 patients had variable findings such as vitreous haemorrhage(8.19%), retinal detachment(6.55%), choroidal detachment(4.91%), posteriorly dislocated clear lens(0.81%) and retained intraocular foreign body(5.73%). Non-traumatic cases constituted around 42(34.42%) eyes, which included corneal ulcer(7.37%), retinoblastoma(6.55%), endophthalmitis(4.91%), extraocular muscle cysticercosis(4.91%), orbital cellulitis(4.09%), periocular haemorrhage(2.45%), proptosis(1.63%), paediatric cataract(1.63%) and cryptophthalmos(0.81%). No adverse events of performing the ultrasound was noted.CONCLUSION: First point ultrasonography in paediatric ocular emergencies is a cheap, portable and an effective tool in the assertion of signifi cant posterior segment and orbital diseases.

The Rasayana plant Withania somnifera(W.somnifera)Dunal,also known as“Ashwagandha”,has been mentioned in various classical Ayurvedic texts,such as Charaka Samhita,Sushruta Samhita,and Nighantus.This Ayurvedic drug has been referred to as a tonic that renews the body,provides physical and mental vigor in weakened states,and promotes endurance and longevity.W.somnifera possesses notable biological activity in many ailments,such as diabetes,conjunctivitis,insomnia,senile dementia,Parkinson’s disease,nervous system disorders,rheumatism,and arthritis.These pharmacological activities are due to the presence of diverse active components and their derivatives.Some lead compounds are found to be effective against anxiety and other central nervous system disorders.W.somnifera has been proven to be effective and safe for a wide range of ailments from ancient to modern times.Its reported properties represent the traditional use of W.somnifera as indicated in the literature;furthermore,W.somnifera is one of the most important prescribed drugs in Ayurveda for its multimodal effects.This current review highlights the bioactive present and provides an overview of the toxicological and pharmacological studies on W.somnifera,including preclinical and clinical studies.From its earliest utilization to its current application,W.somnifera has been recognized to be effective at clinical levels for human health and welfare.Greater attention to the safety and efficacy of W.somnifera would provide more scientific evidence,promoting global acceptance of the Ayurvedic plant.

A comparative review of HLA associations with hepatitis Band C viral infections across global populations

Hepatitis B (HBV) and hepatitis C (HCV) viral infection or co-infection leads to risk of development of chronic infection, cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Immigration and globalization have added to the challenges of public health concerns regarding chronic HBV and HCV infections worldwide. The aim of this study is to review existing global literature across ethnic populations on HBV and HCV related human leukocyte antigen (HLA) associations in relation to susceptibility, viral persistence and treatment. Extensive literature search was conducted to explore the HLA associations in HBV and HCV infections reported across global populations over the past decade to understand the knowledge status, weaknesses and strengths of this information in different ethnic populations. HLA DR13 is consistently associated with HBV clearance globally. HLADRB1*11/*12 alleles and DQB1*0301 are associated with HBV persistence but with HCV clearance worldwide. Consistent association of DRB1*03 and *07 is observed with HCV susceptibility and non-responsiveness to HBV vaccination across the population. HLA DR13 is protective for vertical HBV and HCV transmission in Chinese and Italian neonates, but different alleles are associated with their susceptibility in these populations. HLA class Ⅰmolecule interactions with Killer cell immunoglobulin like receptors (KIR) of natural killer (NK) cells modulate HCV infection outcome via regulating immune regulatory cells and molecules. HLA associations with HBV vaccination, interferon therapy in HBV and HCV, and with extra hepatic manifestations of viral hepatitis are also discussed. Systematic studies in compliance with global regulatory standards are required to identify the HLA specific viral epitope, stage specific T cell populations interacting with different HLA alleles during disease progression and viral clearance of chronic HBV or HCV infections among different ethnic populations. These studies would facilitate stage specific therapeutic strategies for clearance of HBV and HCV

The increasing focus on electrocatalysis for sustainable hydrogen(H_(2))production has prompted significant interest in MXenes,a class of two-dimensional(2D)materials comprising metal carbides,carbonitrides,and nitrides.These materials exhibit intriguing chemical and physical properties,including excellent electrical conductivity and a large surface area,making them attractive candidates for the hydrogen evolution reaction(HER).This scientific review explores recent advancements in MXene-based electrocatalysts for HER kinetics.It discusses various compositions,functionalities,and explicit design principles while providing a comprehensive overview of synthesis methods,exceptional properties,and electro-catalytic approaches for H_(2) production via electrochemical reactions.Furthermore,challenges and future prospects in designing MXenes-based electrocatalysts with enhanced kinetics are highlighted,emphasizing the potential of incorporating different metals to expand the scope of electrochemical reactions.This review suggests possible efforts for developing advanced MXenes-based electrocatalysts,particularly for efficient H_(2) generation through electrochemical water-splitting reactions..

Snow and regolith albedo variations using CRISM data at McMurdo crater,Mars

The cryosphere component provides the most reliable and insightful indications of any planet’s climate dynamics.Using data from the Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars(CRISM),we develop a novel approach to determining the broadband Visible and Near Infrared(VNIR)albedo of the Martian surface.This study focuses on albedo changes in the McMurdo crater,part of Mars’s south polar layer deposits.We compare seasonal and interannual variations of the McMurdo surface albedo before,during,and after the Global Dust Storm(GDS)of Martian Year(MY)34.As the seasons progressed from spring to summer,the mean albedo in MY 32 and 34 plunged by over 40%,by about 35%in MY 33,and by slightly more than 30%in MY 35.Compared interannually,however,mean albedo values within both seasons(spring and summer)exhibited no significant differences in those same years.Notably,interannual albedo difference maps reveal albedo variation of more than±0.3 in certain regions of the crater.Considering only snow-covered pixels,interannual albedo differences suggest that Mars dust had a pervasive impact on Mars’s cryosphere.Variations in maximum and minimum albedo values as high as 0.5 were observed,depending upon differences in the dust levels in Martian snow/ice.The maximum and the minimum snow albedo values were lowest in MY 34,indicating the effect of the intense dust storm event that year.The average snow albedo decreased from 0.45 in MY 32 to 0.40 in MY 33 and to 0.33 in MY 34,and then rose back to 0.40 in MY 35.This trajectory suggests a temporary deposition of dust,partially reversed after the GDS by self-cleaning mechanisms(local aeolian process and CO_(2)sublimation/deposition cycle).

Insights into the interface of NiCo_(2)O_(4) spinel/LaCoO_(3) perovskite nano-composite for CO and soot oxidation

In the quest for the development of thermally stable,highly active and low-cost catalysts for use in catalyzed diesel particulate filter,nano-composites are new areas of research.Therefore,we reported the easy synthesis of spinel NiCo_(2)O_(4)/perovskite LaCoO_(3) nano-composite,and its individual oxides NiCo_(2)O_(4)and LaCoO_(3) for comparison.The detailed insights into the physio-chemical characteristics of formed NiCo_(2)O_(4)/LaCoO_(3) nano-composite were done based on various characterization analysis such as X-ray diffraction(XRD),Fourier transform infrared(FT-IR),N_(2) physiosorption,scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy(SEM-EDX),transmission electron microscopy(TEM),and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS).The characterization analysis of NiCo_(2)O_(4)/LaCoO_(3) revealed the successful formation of a chemical interface possessing strong interfacial interaction,resulting in desirable physicochemical characteristics such as small crystallite size,abundant mesoporosity,high specific surface area and activation of surface lattice oxygen.Owing to the desirable characteristics,the activity results over NiCo_(2)O_(4)/LaCoO_(3) nano-composite showed the excellent CO oxidation performance and high soot oxidation activity,recyclability and thermal stability.This work mainly attempts to emphasize the effectiveness of the facile,inexpensive and conventionally used precipitation method for the successful formation of highly efficient nano-composites.

Transfer Learning-Based Class Imbalance-Aware Shoulder Implant Classification from X-Ray Images

Total shoulder arthroplasty is a standard restorative procedure practiced by orthopedists to diagnose shoulder arthritis in which a prosthesis replaces the whole joint or a part of the joint.It is often challenging for doctors to identify the exact model and manufacturer of the prosthesis when it is unknown.This paper proposes a transfer learning-based class imbalance-aware prosthesis detection method to detect the implant’s manufacturer automatically from shoulder X-ray images.The framework of the method proposes a novel training approach and a new set of batch-normalization,dropout,and fully convolutional layers in the head network.It employs cyclical learning rates and weighting-based loss calculation mechanism.These modifications aid in faster convergence,avoid local-minima stagnation,and remove the training bias caused by imbalanced dataset.The proposed method is evaluated using seven well-known pre-trained models of VGGNet,ResNet,and DenseNet families.Experimentation is performed on a shoulder implant benchmark dataset consisting of 597 shoulder X-ray images.The proposed method improves the classification performance of all pre-trained models by 10–12%.The DenseNet-201-based variant has achieved the highest classification accuracy of 89.5%,which is 10%higher than existing methods.Further,to validate and generalize the proposed method,the existing baseline dataset is supplemented to six classes,including samples of two more implant manufacturers.Experimental results have shown average accuracy of 86.7%for the extended dataset and show the preeminence of the proposed method.
