Suppression Effect of Superoxide Dismutase (SOD)-Like Activity Protein Partially Purified from Raphnus sativus Leaves against Liver Metastasis in Mice Intraperitoneally Infected with Ehrlich Ascites Carcinoma Cell

Liver metastasis is a normal result in Ehrlich Ascites Carcinoma Cell (EAC) infected mice. A partially purified protein with Superoxide Dismutase (SOD)-like activity extracted from leaves of Raphnus sativus was tested for its ability to down regulate liver metastasis of Ehrlich Ascites Carcinoma Cell (EAC) intraperitoneally implanted in albino mice. Sixty albino mice were divided equally into 4 groups. Group I mice (G1 control) were treated with physiologic saline solution for 7 days. Group 2 mice (G2) were injected with the partially purified protein. Group 3 mice (G3) were intraperitoneally inoculated with EAC cells and treated with the partially purified protein. Group 4 mice (G4) were inoculated EAC cells and treated with physiologic saline solution. The results showed a disturbance in liver functions. This disturbance was observed as a reduction in the values of serum albumin, hemoglobin, total counts of erythrocytes and platelets, total lipids in liver tissues, erythrocytes SOD activity, serum glucose, reduced glutathione (GSH) and the trace elements (Fe, Mn, Zn, and Cu) contents in liver and spleen tissues as well as the elevation of serum transaminases activities, the levels of malondialdehyde in blood, DNA and RNA of liver tissues in the infected mice (G4). On the other hand, in G3, after treatment with the partial purified protein all these parameters restored their normal values and became near from the normal group (GI). Moreover, the protein showed no toxicity towards the mice as shown in G2. It could be concluded that a partially purified protein with Superoxide Dismutase (SOD)-like activity extracted from leaves of Raphnus sativus as a nature source has a promised future in controlling liver metastasis.

The Egyptian government introduced wheat-flour fortification with iron and folic acid to reduce the incidence of neural tube defects, but suspended it for technical reasons. We previously developed novel legume foods with enhanced folate content. In this study, we investigated the efficacy of 12-week intervention with folate-enhanced foods versus folic acid supplement in improving folate status in Egyptian women. A randomized, parallel intervention trial with two active groups (n = 19, n = 18) and one blinded control group (n = 20) was executed over 12 weeks. Volunteers received either germinated legume foods and orange juice (≈250 μg/d folate) or folic acid supplement (500 μg/d) or apple juice (0 μg/d folate). Folate status was assessed by erythrocyte and plasma folate and total homocysteine (tHcy) at day 0, and after 8 and 12 weeks of intervention. After 12 weeks, mean plasma folate increased by 14 (P < 0.0001) and 12 (P < 0.0001) nmoL in the folic acid and food group, respectively. Erythrocyte folate concentration increased in the folic acid group from 614 to 912 (P < 0.0001) and in the food group from 631 to 914 nmoL (P < 0.0001). After 12 weeks, 90% of subjects in the folic acid group and 70% in the food group had erythrocyte folate concentrations exceeding 906 nmol/L. tHcy concentration was decreased by 20% (P = 0.007) and 18% (P = 0.006) in the folic acid and food group, respectively, but remained unchanged in the control group during intervention. Folate-enhanced foods effectively improve folate status in women of reproductive age. These foods could be used as a complement to folic acid fortification.

Purpose: To study the effect of escalating radiation dose;in intermediate and high risk prostate cancer patients;via online image-guidance on acute toxicities. Patients and Methods: thirty-eight prostate cancer patients were treated by using simultaneous integrated boost-intensity modulated radiation therapy (SIB-IMRT) with online image guided correction via kilo voltage cone beam computed tomography (KV-CBCT)/electronic portal imaging device (EPID) of trans-rectal ultrasound (TRUS)-inserted intraprostatic gold fiduciary markers. High-risk patients received a median dose of 80.5 Gy to prostate and 56 Gy to pelvic nodes in 35 fractions over 7 weeks. Intermediate-risk patients received a similar prostate dose over the same overall treatment time. Acute toxicity (bladder, rectal and bowel symptoms) was reported once weekly during the radiation course and up to 3 months from the end of the radiation course. Results: The image guided (IG)-IMRT allows escalating the radiation dose delivered to the prostate through minimizing the margin of setup error to less than 0.5 cm with subsequent sparing of nearby organs at risk. Out of thirty-eight patients, no patient developed >grade 1 acute rectal toxicity, 7.9% of patients experienced grade 3 urinary toxicity and there was no reported small intestinal toxicity. Conclusion: Escalating the radiation dose more than 80 Gy in intermediate and high risk prostate cancer patients was safe and not associated with grade 3 - 4 RTOG toxicity when guided by online verification of intra-prostatic fiducial markers.

Background: High levels of MCL-1 and BCL-2 proteins have been found in Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL), and inversely correlated with response to treatment. BCL-2/Bax ratio is the main director of apoptosis in CLL. The study aimed to clarify the prognostic role of MCL-1, BCL-2 and BCL-2/ Bax ratio in B-CLL. Patients & method: Estimation of MCL-1, BCL-2 and Bax expressions by a flow cytometry in 45 B-CLL patients and the prognostic value of these markers were correlated with other well-known established prognostic markers and treatment response. Results: MCL-1 was expressed in 60% of cases while BCL-2 was expressed in 82.2% of cases. MCL-1 expression was significantly high in male gender, short lymphocyte doubling time (LDT), and high expression of CD 38 (p β2M, CD38 expression), low ZAP-70 expression, splenomegaly and higher Rai stage were significantly increased in patients with high expression of BCL-2 (p β2M, high C-D38 expression, low ZAP-70 expression, the poor cytogenetic and splenomegaly in patients with high expression of BCL-2/ Bax ratio (p In conclusion: MCL-1, BCL-2 expressions and BCL-2/Bax ratio could be useful potential predictive and prognostic markers in B-CLL.

The aim of our study is to reveal the effect of steel reinforcement details,tensile steel reinforcement ratio,compressed reinforcing steel ratio,reinforcing steel size,corner joint shape on the strength of reinforced concrete Fc'and delve into it for the most accurate details and concrete connections about the behavior and resistance of the corner joint of reinforced concrete,Depending on the available studies and sources in addition to our study,we concluded that each of these effects had a clear role in the behavior and resistance of the corner joint of reinforced concrete under the influence of the negative moment and yield stress.A study of the types of faults that can be reinforced angle joints obtains details and conditions of crushing that are almost identical for all types of steel reinforcement details and the basic requirements for the acceptable behavior of reinforced concrete joints in the installations and the efficiency of the joint and this may help us to prepare for disasters,whether natural or other,as happens with tremors The floor and failure that may occur due to wrong designs or old buildings and the possibility of using those connections to treat those joints and sections in reinforced or unarmed concrete facilities to preserve the safety of humans and buildings from sudden disasters and reduce and reduce risks,as well as qualitative control over the production of concrete connections and sections free from defects to the extreme.

The Surface Reactivity of Pure and Monohydrogenated Nanocones Formed from Graphene Sheets

A systematic computational study of surface reactivity for pure and mono-hydrogenated carbon nanocoes (CNCs) formed from graphene sheets as functions of disclination angle, cone size and hydrogenation sites has been investigated through density functional (DFT) calculations and at the B3LYP/3-21G level of theory. Five disclination angles (60°, 120°, 180°, 240° and 300°) are applied and at any disclination angle four structures with different sizes are studied. For comparison, pure and mono-hydrogenated boron nitride nanocones (BNNCs) with disclination angles 60°, 120°, 180°, 240° and 300° are also investigated. The hydrogenation is done on three different sites, HS1 (above the first neighbor atom of the apex atoms), HS2 (above one atom of the apex atoms) and HS3 (above one atom far from the apex atoms). Our calculations show that the highest surface reactivity for pure CNCs and BNNCs at disclination angles 60°, 180° and 300° is 23.50 Debye for B41N49H10 cone and at disclination angles 120° and 240° is 15.30 Debye for C94H14 cone. For mono-hydrogenated CNCs, the highest surface reactivity is 22.17 Debye for C90H10-HS3 cone at angle 300° and for mono-hydrogenated BNNCs the highest surface reactivity is 28.97 Debye for B41N49H10-HS1 cone when the hydrogen atom is adsorbed on boron atom at cone angle 240°.

Value of Different Diagnostic Markers in Spontaneous Bacterial Peritonitis in HCV Egyptian Cirrhotic Patients

Background: Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) is a life-threatening infection occurring in 8% - 30% of ascitic cirrhotic patients;different laboratory diagnostics play a pivotal role for rapid and effective management of SBP patients. Polymorphonuclear leucocytic (PMNLs) count in Ascitic fluid (AF) is the mainstay for the diagnosis, whereas the diagnostic role of alternative biomarkers is rather controversial. In many studies, serum lipopolysaccharide binding protein (LBP) was elevated and Complement 3 (C3) level was significantly consumed in AF of SBP patients. Objectives: To evaluate the diagnostic value of serum LBP and AF C3 in HCV-cirrhotics with SBP in relation to other well-established serum and AF markers. Patients and Methods: One hundred and twenty patients with HCV-cirrhosis and ascites were enrolled and consented: 50 patients with non-SBP ascites in group A and 70 ascitic patients diagnosed with SBP according to clinical suspicion and PMLs count in AF ≥ 250 cells/mm3 in group B in addition to 15 healthy individuals considered as a control group. Serum LBP, CBC, kidney and liver function tests, CRP, fasting and 2 h PP blood glucose and HCV antibodies were measured. AF samples were sent for C3 level, culture, PMNLs count, LDH, CRP, total proteins and albumin. Results: In patients with SBP, the level of serum LBP was not significantly high (p > 0.05) with best cut off value at 0.4500 and poor AUC (<0.6) with low sensitivity and specificity (53.3% & 57.7%, respectively). AF C3 was significantly reduced in AF (p < 0.001) with best cut off value at 144.2 and almost excellent AUC (0.889) with good sensitivity and specificity (82% & 84%, respectively). AF culture showed significant difference between both patients groups (p < 0.05) but with low sensitivity (33.3%). Serum and AF CRP and AF PMNLs count were of high significance in SBP diagnosis (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Serum LBP level showed low significance while AF C3 was significantly reduced in patients

AIM: To determine human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-DQB1 allele association with susceptibility to type 1 diabetes (T1D) and to clinical and laboratory findings. METHODS: This study was conducted on 85 unrelated Egyptian children with T1D recruited consecutively from the Pediatric Diabetes Endocrinology outpatients Clinic; Mansoura University Children’s Hospital, Egypt. Patient mean follow up period was 2.5 years. Patients were subdivided according to level of HbA1c (optimal/suboptimal control < 8.5% and poor control ≥ 8.5%). The control group consisted of 113 unrelated age- and sex-matched healthy subjects without T1D or other autoimmune diseases. Genomic DNA extraction was done for all subjects using a DNA isolation kit. HLA-Class II-DQB1 allele typing was carried out with a polymerase chain reaction-sequence-specific oligonucleotide probe using a INNO-LiPA HLA-DQB1 update kit. RESULTS: Significant differences were detected between Egyptian patients with T1D and control groups in the frequencies of DQB1*02 [44.4% vs 18.6%, corrected P value (Pc) < 0.001] and DQB1*03 (41.2% vs 24.4%, Pc < 0.001). Significant differences were also observed between control groups and T1D patients in the frequencies of DQB1*05 (14.6% vs 7.2%, P = 0.029) and DQB1*06 (34.1% vs 7.2%, P < 0.001). However, after correction for multiple comparisons, the significance was retained for HLA-DQB1*06 (Pc < 0.001) but lost for HLA-DQB1*05. HLA-DQB1*0201, *0202, *030201 were positively associated with T1D (Pc = 0.014, Pc < 0.001, and Pc < 0.001 respectively), while HLA-DQB1*060101 was negatively associated (Pc < 0.001) with the condition. Although the HLA-DQB1 alleles 030101 and 050101 were significantly higher in controls (P = 0.016, P = 0.025 respectively), both of them lost statistical significance after correction of P value. The frequency of the HLA-DQB1 genotypes 02/02, 02/03, and 03/03 was higher in T1D patients, and the frequency of the genotypes 03/06, 05/06, and 06/06 was higher in controls,

A pressure dependent Schrodinger equation is used to find the conditions that lead to superconductivity. When no pressure is exerted, the superconductor resistance vanishes beyond a critical temperature related to the repulsive force potential of the electron gass, where one assuming the electron total energy to be thermal, where applying mechanical pressure destroys Sc when it exceeds a certain critical value. However when the electron total energy is an assumed to be that of the free electron model and that the pressure is thermal and mechanical, the situation is different. The quantum expression for resistance shows that the increase of mechanical pressure increases the critical temperature. Such phenomenon is observed in high temperature cupper group.
