The soft X-ray Imager(sXI)is part of the scientific payload of the solar wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer(sMILE)*** is a joint science mission between the European space Agency(EsA)and the Chinese Academy of sciences(CAs)and is due for launch in *** is a compact X-ray telescope with a wide field-of-view(FOV)capable of encompassing large portions of Earth’s magnetosphere from the vantage point of the sMILE *** is sensitive to the soft X-rays produced by the solar Wind Charge eXchange(sWCX)process produced when heavy ions of solar wind origin interact with neutral particles in Earth’s *** provides a mechanism for boundary detection within the magnetosphere,such as the position of Earth’s magnetopause,because the solar wind heavy ions have a very low density in regions of closed magnetic field *** sensitivity of the sXI is such that it can potentially track movements of the magnetopause on timescales of a few minutes and the orbit of sMILE will enable such movements to be tracked for segments lasting many *** is led by the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom(UK)with collaborating organisations on hardware,software and science support within the UK,Europe,China and the United states.

A micromechanical model for efective conductivity in granular electrode structures

Optimization of composition and microstructure is important to enhance performance of solid oxide fuel cells （sOFC） and lithium-ion batteries （LIB）. For this, the porous electrode structures of both sOFC and LIB are modeled as a binary mixture of electronic and ionic conducting particles to estimate effective transport properties. Particle packings of 10000 spherical, binary sized and randomly positioned particles are created numerically and densified considering the different manufacturing processes in sOFC and LIB： the sintering of sOFC electrodes is approximated geometrically, whereas the calendering process and volume change due to intercalation in LIB are modeled physically by a discrete el- ement approach. A combination of a tracking algorithm and a resistor network approach is developed to predict the con- nectivity and effective conductivity for the various densified structures. For sOFC, a systematic study of the influence of morphology on connectivity and conductivity is performed on a large number of assemblies with different compositions and particle size ratios between 1 and 10. In comparison to percolation theory, an enlarged percolation area is found, es- pecially for large size ratios. It is shown that in contrast to former studies the percolation threshold correlates to varying coordination numbers. The effective conductivity shows not only an increase with volume fraction as expected but also with size ratio. For LIB, a general increase of conductivity during the intercalation process was observed in correlation with increasing contact forces. The positive influence of cal- endering on the percolation threshold and the effective conductivity of carbon black is shown. The anisotropy caused by the calendering process does not influence the carbon black phase.

Rapid design of top-performing metal-organic frameworks with qualitative representations of building blocks

Data-driven materials design often encounters challenges where systems possess qualitative(categorical)***,representing Metal-organic frameworks(MOFs)through different building blocks poses a challenge for designers to incorporate qualitative information into design optimization,and leads to a combinatorial challenge,with large number of MOFs that could be *** this work,we integrated Latent Variable Gaussian Process(LVGP)and Multi-Objective Batch-Bayesian Optimization(MOBBO)to identify top-performing MOFs adaptively,autonomously,and *** showcased that our method(i)requires no specific physical descriptors and only uses building blocks that construct the MOFs for global optimization through qualitative representations,(ii)is application and property independent,and(iii)provides an interpretable model of building blocks with physical *** searching only~1%of the design space,LVGP-MOBBO identified all MOFs on the Pareto front and 97%of the 50 top-performing designs for the CO_(2) working capacity and CO_(2)/N2 selectivity properties.

Practical Application of Altitude/Hypoxic Training for Olympic Medal Performance:The Team UsA Experience

Tornado effects on damage,resprouting and spatial heterogeneity in the Cross Timbers ecotone of Oklahoma,UsA

Aims In order to better understand how tornados structure the ecotone between eastern deciduous forest and tallgrass prairie,we sampled trees in a recent tornado blowdown area and in the adjacent undisturbed *** are part of the Cross Timbers ecotone of Osage County,Northeastern Oklahoma,*** We set up a 1-ha square plot in each area and sampled all tree stems at least 50 cm tall where stems were identified to species and measured for size and spatial location in both *** the stems in the blowdown plot,we also scored damage and *** then used the spatial location data to compute the spatial heterogeneity and degree of clumping in both *** Findings significant clumping was observed in the control forest at the small spatial scale of 1–8 m and at the medium spatial scale of 30–36 *** blowdown area:showed domination by post oak(Quercus stellata)with small stems,branch damage and stem resprouting above 1 m most common;had no trees that either lost their leaves without branch or stem damage or lived without some sort of resprouting,had a significant negative correlation between damage and resprouting and clumped only at small spatial scales for stems of medium size,for stems with branch damage and for stems that resprouted at or below 1 m *** conclude that in addition to largely eliminating a forest’s spatial heterogeneity,tornados may also structure this ecotone by increasing tree persistence through resprouting。

Phylogenetic relationships within the sinica-group of macaques based on morphological,behavioral,and molecular characteristics have remained *** Nepal population of Assam macaques(Macaca assamensis)(NPAM),the westernmost population of the species,is morphologically distinct but has never been used in phylogenetic ***,the phylogenetic relationship of NPAM with other congeners was tested using multiple mitochondrial and Ychromosomal *** divergence times and evolutionary genetic distances among macaques were also *** revealed two major mitochondrial DNA clades of macaques under the sinica-group:the first clade included ***,***,and eastern subspecies of Assam macaque(*** assamensis);the second clade included *** together with species from the eastern and central Himalaya,namely,***,***,and *** the second-clade species,NPAM was the first to diverge from the other members of the clade around 1.9 million years *** results revealed that NPAM is phylogenetically distinct from the eastern Assam macaques and closer to other species and hence may represent a separate *** of its phylogenetic distinctiveness,isolated distribution,and small population size,the Nepal population of sinica-group macaques warrants detailed taxonomic revision and high conservation priority.

Exosomes derived from mesenchymal stem cells(MsC-Exos)are nano-sized extracellular vesicles enriched with bioactive molecules,such as microRNAs,enzymes,cytokines,chemokines,immunomodulatory,trophic,and growth *** molecules regulate the survival,phenotype,and function of malignant and tumor-infiltrated immune *** to their nano-size and bilayer lipid envelope,MsC-Exos can easily bypass biological barriers and may serve as drug carriers to deliver chemotherapeutics directly into the tumor ***,we summarize current knowledge regarding molecular mechanisms responsible for MsC-Exos-dependent modulation of tumor progression and discuss insights regarding the therapeutic potential of MsC-Exos in the treatment of malignant diseases.
