Visualizing the spatial water quality of Bentota, Sri Lanka in the presence of seawater intrusion

Seawater flows towards the inlands along with the rivers and canals, through the process of infiltration and leaks in the ground water characterized by high concentrations of soluble salts. High salinity concentrations can make groundwater unsuitable for public consumption and surface water unsuitable for irrigation and agricultural activities. This study envisages the fluctuations of ground and surface water quality of Bentota area in the presence of seawater intrusion. The temporal and spatial variations of eleven water parameters were monitored by collecting the water samples during one year period. Spatial distributions were assessed by applying the Inverse distance weighted (IDW) interpolation method in Arc gIS 10.5 software. Water quality is assessed on the integration of all parameters in terms of an index based on the World Health Organization (WHO) standards. The significant linear relationship between the considered parameters of surface water (SW) and groundwater (gW) were identified applying correlation analysis using SPSS software. All parameters of surface water were above the permissible limits of WHO standards. Surface water quality index values with respect to 60% of canals show very poor quality (>1 250) of surface water indicating their unsuitability for irrigation activities. Those surface water bodies indicated very highly saline conditions during dry months. The spatial distribution of ground water quality index with respect to the highest parameter values of each sampling location indicates that 52.2% of total land extent of Bentota Divisional Secretariat Division (DSD) has good quality of ground water which is suitable for drinking. Its 47.2% of total land extent has poor quality of ground water for drinking purpose and less than 0.5% of the area consists of excellent or very poor quality of ground water in each. This study helps to manage coastal aquifers by understanding the extreme water quality conditions and coastal salinity.

Efficient dye-sensitized solar cells from mesoporous zinc oxide nanostructures sensitized by N719 dye

Dye-sensitized solar cells（DSCs） have attracted a great deal of attention due to their low-cost and high power conversion efficiencies. They usually utilize an interconnected nanoparticle layer of TiO2 as the electron transport medium. From the fundamental point of view, faster mobility of electrons in Zn O is expected to contribute to better performance in DSCs than TiO2, though the actual practical situation is quite the opposite. In this research, we addressed this problem by first applying a dense layer of Zn O on FTO followed by a mesoporous layer of interconnected Zn O nanoparticle layer, both were prepared by spray pyrolysis technique. The best cell shows a power conversion efficiency of 5.2% when the mesoporous layer thickness is 14 μm and the concentration of the N719 dye in dye coating solution is 0.3 m M, while a cell without a dense layer shows 4.2% under identical conditions. The surface concentration of dye adsorbed in the cell with a dense layer and that without a dense layer are5.00 × 10^（-7） and 3.34 × 10^（-7） mol/cm^2, respectively. The cell with the dense layer has an electron lifetime of-54.81 ms whereas that without the dense layer is 11.08 ms. As such, the presence of the dense layer improves DSC characteristics of Zn O-based DSCs.

Predictors of nodal metastasis in sinonasal squamous cell carcinoma:A national cancer database analysis

Objective:We present the largest population based study of sinonasal squamous cell carcinoma(SCC)to identify risk factors for presentation with nodal metastasis.Methods:The National Cancer Database(NCDB)was used for this study.Location codes corresponding to the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses and histology codes representing SCC malignancy were queried.Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify factors associated with presentation with nodal metastasis.Results:6448 cases met inclusion criteria.Nodal metastasis at presentation was seen in 13.2%of patients,with the sinus subsite(19.3%)being a significant risk factor for nodal metastasis at presentation when compared to the nasal cavity(7.9%).Logistic regression analysis showed black,uninsured and Medicaid patients were more likely than white and privately insured patients,respectively,to present with nodal metastasis.Conclusions:In sinonasal SCC,the sinus subsite has a significantly increased risk of nodal metastasis compared to the nasal cavity.Black race,uninsured and Medicaid patients are more likely to have nodal metastasis at presentation.

Prediction of chemical composition for callus production in gyrinops walla gaetner through machine learning

Developing new tissue culture protocols and optimization of plant media composition for particular plant species are precluded by the higher labor,time and cost.The usage of machine learning becomes rewarding tools for efficient,cost-effective method of optimization of growth media composition for desires growth performance.Difficulties are often encountered in determination of media composition for raising calli from explants of woody gyrinops walla.This paper provides the finding of the study performed on modeling and optimization of chemical composition of culture media for raising callus from explants of g.walla.Number of experiments were conducted to raise calli from sterilized leaf and node explants with varying concentrations of 1-Naphthaleneacetic acid(NAA),6-Benzylaminopurine(BAP)and coconut water in Murashige and Skoog medium(MSM)and Woody plant medium(WPM)were conducted.Artificial Neural Networks(ANNs)were developed to predict the best media composition on callus weight(CW),callus induction percentage(CIP)and days taken to initiate callus(DC).Callus formation was observed in all the experiments except for controls.Three ANN models were developed to predict the best media composition for CW,CIP and DC.The results of ANN models predict optimum media composition during the training,validation and testing with satisfactory levels of performance.The R2 values of the best ANN models;CWnet,CIPnet and DCnet were 0.95,0.95 and 0.88 respectively.The mean sums of square errors(RMSRs)of CWnet,CIPnet and DCnet were 0.1410,0.1391 and 0.1961 and mean residual(MRs)were 0.0199,0.0194 and 0.0385.The corrected Akaike information criterion(AICc)of the models was331.431,254.926 and210.777,and Schwarz Bayesian information criterion(SBC)were490.495,454.229 and382.123.The predicted best media consisting MSM+3.0 mg/l NAA+0.5 mg/l BAP and MSM+1.5 mg/l NAA+0.5 mg/l BAP were the optimum combination for leaves and nodal explants respectively.The AICc and SBC of CWnet indicated better performance over the rest of the models i

DNA origami mediated electrically connected metal–semiconductor junctions

DNA-based nanofabrication of inorganic nanostructures has potential application in electronics,catalysis,and plasmonics.Previous DNA metallization has generated conductive DNA-assembled nanostructures;however,the use of semiconductors and the development of well-connected nanoscale metal-semiconductor junctions on DNA nanostructures are still at an early stage.Herein,we report the first fabrication of multiple electrically connected metal-semiconductor junctions on individual DNA origami by location-specific binding of gold and tellurium nanorods.Nanorod attachment to DNA origami was via DNA hybridization for Au and by electrostatic interaction for Te.Electroless gold plating was used to create nanoscale metal-semiconductor interfaces by filling the gaps between Au and Te nanorods.Two-point electrical characterization indicated that the Au-Te-Au junctions were electrically connected,with current-voltage properties consistent with a Schottky junction.DNA-based nanofabrication of metal-semiconductor junctions opens up potential opportunities in nanoelectronics,demonstrating the power of this bottom-up approach.

Peroxymonosulfate decomposition by homogeneous and heterogeneous Co: Kinetics and application for the degradation of acetaminophen

Peroxymonosulfate(PMS)decomposition,hydroxyl radical(·OH)generation,and acetaminophen(ACT)degradation by the Co/PMS system using homogeneous(dissolved cobalt)and heterogeneous(suspended Co3O4)cobalt were assessed.For the homogeneous process,>99%PMS decomposition was observed and 10 mmol/L of·OH generation was produced using 5 mmol/L of PMS and different dissolved cobalt concentrations after 30 min.A dissolved cobalt concentration of 0.2 mmol/L was used to achieve>99%ACT degradation using the homogeneous process.For the heterogeneous process,60%PMS decomposition and negligible·OH generation were observed for 5 mmol/L of the initial PMS concentration using 0.1 and 0.2 g/L of Co3O4.Degradation of ACT greater than 80%was achieved for all experimental runs using 5 mmol/L of the initial PMS concentration independently of the initial Co3O4 load used.For the heterogeneous process,the best experimental conditions for ACT degradation were found to be 3 mmol/L of PMS and 0.2 g/L of Co3O4,for which>99%ACT degradation was achieved after 10 min.Because negligible·OH was produced by the Co3O4/PMS process,a second-order kinetic model was proposed for sulfur-based free radical production to allow fair comparison between homogeneous and heterogeneous processes.Using the kinetic data and the reaction by-products identified,a mechanistic pathway for ACT degradation is suggested.

Analysis of growth Characteristics and Differentially Expressed Homologous genes in Rhodobacter sphaeroides under Normal and Simulated Microgravity Conditions

The term “microgravity” is used to describe the “weightlessness” or “zero-g” circumstances that can only be found in space beyond earth’s atmosphere. Rhodobacter sphaeroides is a gram-negative purple phototroph, used as a model organism for this study due to its genomic complexity and metabolic versatility. Its genome has been completely sequenced, and profiles of the differential gene expression under aerobic, semi-aerobic, and photosynthetic conditions were examined. In this study, we hypothesized that R. sphaeroides will show altered growth characteristics, morphological properties, and gene expression patterns when grown under simulated microgravity. To test that, we measured the optical density and colony-forming units of cell cultures grown under both microgravity and normal gravity conditions. Differences in the cell morphology were observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images by measuring the length and the surface area of the cells under both conditions. Furthermore, we also identified homologous genes of R. spheroides using the differential gene expression study of Acidovorax under microgravity in our laboratory. growth kinetics results showed that R. sphaeroides cells grown under microgravity experience a shorter log phase and early stationary phase compared to the cells growing under normal gravity conditions. The length and surface area of the cells under microgravity were significantly higher confirming that bacterial cells experience altered morphological features when grown under microgravity conditions. Differentially expressed homologous gene analysis indicated that genes coding for several COg and gO functions, such as metabolism, signal-transduction, transcription, translation, chemotaxis, and cell motility are differentially expressed to adapt and survive microgravity.

Distances and Evolutionary States of Supernova Remnant g18.9-1.1 and Candidate g28.6+0.0

HI spectra of the supernova remnant g18.9-1.1 and the supernova remnant candidate g28.6+0.0 are analyzed. We compared the spectra to 13CO emission spectra and to spectra of HII regions in the area to determine kinematic distances. g18.9-1.1 is at 2.1 ± 0.4 kpc and g28.6+0.0 is at 9.0 ± 0.3 kpc from the Sun. Using the published X-ray spectra of g18.9-1.1, we apply supernova remnant models for shocked-ISM temperature and emission measure. We find that g18.9-1.1 has low, but not atypical, explosion energy of ≈3 × 1050 erg and is in a low-density region of the ISM, ~0.1 cm-3. It has age ~3700 yr if the ejecta mass is 1.4 M?, typical of Type Ia SNe, or ~4700 yr if the ejecta mass is 5 M? typical of core-collapse SN. The candidate g28.6+0.0 does not have reported X-ray emission, so we apply a basic Sedov model. The Sedov age is ~600 yr if the ISM density is 1 cm-3 but could be as old as ~6000 yr if the ISM density is as high as 100 cm-3.
