In vitro anti oxidant activity and acute oral toxicity of Terminalia paniculata bark ethanolic extract on Sprague Dawley rats

Objective:To ensure the safety and evaluate the anti oxidant activity of Terminalia paniculata(***)ethanolic extract in Sprague Dawley ***:The solvent extracts(hexane,ethyl acetate and ethanol)of *** were subjected to phytochemical analysis and their DPPH radical scavenging activity was *** oral acute toxicity was evaluated using ethanolic extract of ***:Ethyl acetate and elhanolic extracts showed more phytochemicals,whereas highest DPPH scavenging activity was found in ethanolic *** an acute toxicity study,*** ethanolic extract was orally administered(1000 mg/kg body weight)to rats and observed for72 h for any toxic symptoms and the dose was continued up to 14 *** the 15th day rats were sacrificed and blood samples were collected from control and test animals and analyzed for some biochemical *** did not observe any behavioral changes in test groups in comparison with their ***,there were no significant alterations in biochemical,hematological(hemoglobin content and blood cells count)and liver function parameters such as serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase,serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase,alkaline phosphatase,total proteins,albumin and bilirubin levels between *** ethanolic extract treated and normal control ***:Together our results demonstrated that *** ethanolic possessed potent antioxidant activity and it was safer and non toxic to rats even at higher doses and therefore could be well considered for further investigation for its medicinal and therapeutic efficacy.

Objective:To evaluate the efficacy of methanolic extract of Murraya koenigii(MMK)leaves in attenuating the hepatic damage inflicted by carbon tetrachloride(CCl_(4)),a potent oxidative stress inducer and a model ***:Rats were divided into six groups of five each:normal control group,CCl_(4)group,CCl_(4+)silymarin group,CCl_(4+)MMK group(200 mg/kg body weight),CCl_(4+)MMK group(300 mg/kg body weight)and CCl_(4+)MMK group(500 mg/kg body weight).Rats were intraperitoneally injected with 20%CCl_(4),in corn oil(1 mL/kg body weight)and MMK was orally administered for 3 *** of hepatic markers such as alanine transaminase,aspartate transaminase,alkaline phosphatase and total billirubin were *** of superoxide dismutase,catalase and glutathione peroxidase were assayed and malondialdehyde content was *** histopathological examination,liver microtome sections were prepared and observed under light ***:Oral administration of MMK had significantly reduced the activities of aspartate transaminase,alanine transaminase,alkaline phosphatase and bilirubin content in a dosedependent manner,which were elevated by CCl_(4).However,CCl_(4)-induced rise in lipid peroxidation and drop in superoxide dismutase,catalase and glutathione peroxidase activities were reversed by MMK ***,the hepatoprotective activity of MMK was supported by histopathological examination of liver microtome ***:Our biochemical and histological studies demonstrate the potential antioxidant and hepatoprotective activity of MMK and our results scientifically validate the often use of MMK leaves in food preparation and in Ayurvedic medicine in India and neighboring countries.
