Shorebird populations are declining worldwide,mainly due to human disturbances and loss of coastal ***,supratidal habitats as saltpans could play a role in buffering human *** have shown to be important as feeding or breeding sites of some shorebird species.A potential conservation strategy to increase shorebird populations in saltpans is to manipulate the cues that birds use to select optimal breeding *** it is hypothesized that shorebirds are attracted to bivalve shells due to the advantages they *** this hypothesis,we supplemented a restored saltpan in 2019 and 2021 with bivalve shells,expecting an increase in the number of breeding birds’ *** than 75% of Kentish Plover(Charadrius alexandrinus) and Little Tern(Sternula albifrons) nests were found in patches with shells in both *** best model for both species indicates that the presence of shells is the factor that most correlates with the location of *** probability of choosing one place over another to settle their nest increases in areas with an abundance of shells,double in the case of the Kentish Plover and triple in the case of the Little *** result of this study may constitute a valuable tool for attracting birds to restored saltpans and could contribute to the success of expensive restoration projects where time is usually a constraint.

AIM To compare the safety and efficacy or 3 basal-bolus regimens of neutral protamine hagedorn(nPH)/regular insulin in the management of inpatient *** We randomized 105 patients with blood glucose levelsbetween 140 and 400 mg/dL to a basal-bolus regimen of nPH insulin given once(n = 30), twice(n = 40) or three times(n = 35) daily, in addition to pre-meal regular insulin. Major outcomes included were differences in glycemic control, frequency of hypoglycemia and total insulin *** nPH insulin given in a once-daily regimen was associated with better glycemic control(58.3%) compared to twice daily(42.4%) and three times daily(48.9) regimens(P = 0.031). The frequency of hypoglycemia was similar between the three groups(2.0%, 0.7% and 1.2%, P = 0.21). The mean insulin dose at discharge was 0.48 ± 0.14 U/kg in the once-daily group compared to 0.69 ± 0.28 in the twice-daily, and 0.65 ± 0.20 in the three times daily regimens(P nCLUSIOn nPH insulin administered in a once-daily regimen resulted in improvement in glycemic control with similar rates of hypoglycemia compared to a twice-daily and a three times-daily regimen. Further studies are needed to evaluate whether this regimen could be implemented in all hospitalized patients with hyperglycemia.

BACKGROUnD:Since we have previously shown an increase of mast cells in the small bowel and in the mesenteric lymph nodes in the rats with prehepatic portal hypertension,it can be hypothesized that this essential inflammatory cell would be involved in the pathogeny of the splanchnic changes related to portal hypertension. METHODS:To verify this hypothesis,we first studied mast cell infiltration in the ileum and in the mesenteric lymph nodes in sham-operated male Wistar rats(n=12) and in short-term prehepatic portal hypertensive rats (n=12),and the serum levels of rat mast cell protease Ⅱ(RMCP-Ⅱ)by *** a second set of experiments ketotifen,a mast cell stabilizer drug,was administered to sham-operated(n=10)and portal hypertensive(n=12) rats 24 hours before the intervention and prostanoids (PGE2,PGI2,TXB2)and leukotrienes(LTC4,LTB4)were assayed by RIA,mast cell infiltration in the ileum and in the mesenteric lymph nodes and the serum levels of RMCP-Ⅱwere also studied,to show its effectiveness to prevent the mesenteric alterations produced by the inflammatory mediators released by the mast cell. RESULTS:Forty-eight hours after the intervention RMCP-Ⅱ (Pnd LTC4 serum levels decreased and mast cell number and RMCP-Ⅱlevels increased in mesenteric lymph nodes in portal hypertensive *** administration of ketotifen reduced portal pressure(Pnd RMCP-Ⅱ(Pn mesenteric lymph nodes. COnCLUSIOnS:In acute portal hypertension in the rat,the mast cell translocation from intestinal mucosa to mesenteric lymph nodes,where they are activated and degranulates,would represent a defence mechanism to avoid the activation of an acute and massive inflammatory response in this *** administration of ketotifen is able to reduce the splanchnic inflammatory changes related to acute portal hypertension in the rat.

Autologous fat grafting is an important surgical technique in aesthetic and reconstructive *** grafting for breast reconstruction is now an established procedure for adding volume and improving cutaneous pliability;it can be used independently to replace more invasive flap procedures or implants,or as an adjunct for smaller volume *** breadth of applications in the breast necessitates diversity in technique and approach,and while there is no universally agreed-upon protocol,basic principles have guided the evolution of some commonly adopted ***,fat grafting outcomes are highly favorable but dependent on patient and procedure factors,requiring learned patient selection and expertise in recipient site *** complications from fat grafting,such as fat necrosis and the development of nodules,are particularly troublesome for post-oncologic patients,requiring considerable pre-surgical consultation for patient education and managing *** addition to volume and contour augmentation,fat grafting has additional beneficial effects that have recently drawn increased attention including pain reduction from implant capsular contracture or postmastectomy pain syndrome,improved skin quality and reduced fibrosis following radiation,and possible anti-tumorigenic *** developments in clinical fat grafting research that are promising include the use of adipose progenitor cells admixed with lipoaspirate for improved volume retention or alternative biologics such as platelet-rich ***,research towards safe and effective regenerative medicine approaches is actively underway,with the ultimate goal of achieving predictable and increased graft retention,reducing the number of required surgical procedures and enabling on-table results to reflect procedure outcomes.

Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) is a successful pathogen that can persist in the stomach of an infected person for their entire life. It provokes chronic gastric inflammation that leads to the development of serious gastric diseases such as peptic ulcers, gastric cancer and Mucosa associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma. It is known that these ailments can be avoided if the infection by the bacteria can be prevented or eradicated. Currently, numerous antibiotic-based therapies are available. However, these therapies have several inherent problems, including the appearance of resistance to the antibiotics used and associated adverse effects, the risk of re-infection and the high cost of antibiotic therapy. The delay in developing a vaccine to prevent or eradicate the infection has furthered research into new therapeutic approaches. This review summarises the most relevant recent studies on vaccine development and new treatments using natural resources such as plants, probiotics and nutraceuticals. In addition, novel alternatives based on microorganisms, peptides, polysaccharides, and intragastric violet light irradiation are presented. Alternative therapies have not been effective in eradicating the bacteria but have been shown to maintain low bacterial levels. nevertheless, some of them are useful in preventing the adverse effects of antibiotics, modulating the immune response, gastroprotection, and the general promotion of health. Therefore, those agents can be used as adjuvants of allopathic anti-H. pylori eradication therapy.

Infuence of Process Parameters on the RF Sputtered GaP Thin Films

In this work, gallium phosphide thin films were deposited on glass substrates by radio frequency （RF） magnetron sputtering technique under different depositions conditions. The X-ray diffraction analysis showed a diversity of states： from amorphous in the films deposited at 175 ~C to a nearly stoichiometric and polycrystalline films, exhibiting cubic phase with preferred orientation along （220）, in the films deposited at temperatures higher than 250 ~C. Scanning electron microscopy images revealed that all films were uniform with a smooth surface, while the energy-dispersive spectroscopy （EDS） analysis showed that there was a visible dependence on the Ga/P ratio in the deposition conditions and confirmed that a residual Ga metallic phase was presented in the surface of all the films. The raman analysis showed the structural evolution of the GaP films was strongly dependent on the deposition conditions. The conductivity of the films was slightly dependent on the argon pressure and the rf power, but strongly dependent on the deposition temperature, mainly above 200 ~C. The optical transmission and absorption analyses of the GaP films revealed an indirect band gap of ~ 1.70 eV in the films deposited at temperatures less than 200 ~C, which transited to a band gap of 2.26 eV as the deposition temperature was close to 300 ~C.

Spinal cord injury is a very common pathological event that has devastating functional consequences in patients. In recent years, several research groups are trying to find an effective therapy that could be applied in clinical practice. In this study, we analyzed the combination of different strategies as a potential therapy for spinal cord injury. Immunization with neural derived peptides(InDP), inhibition of glial scar formation(dipyridyl: DPY), as well as the use of biocompatible matrix(fibrin glue: FG) impregnated with bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs) were combined and then its beneficial effects were evaluated in the induction of neuroprotection and neuroregeneration after acute SCI. Sprague-Dawley female rats were subjected to a moderate spinal cord injury and then randomly allocated into five groups: 1) phosphate buffered saline; 2) DPY; 3) InDP + DPY; 4) DPY+ FG; 5) InDP + DPY + FG + MSCs. In all rats, intervention was performed 72 hours after spinal cord injury. Locomotor and sensibility recovery was assessed in all rats. At 60 days after treatment, histological examinations of the spinal cord(hematoxylin-eosin and Bielschowsky staining) were performed. Our results showed that the combination therapy(DPY+ InDP + FG+ MSCs) was the best strategy to promote motor and sensibility recovery. In addition, significant increases in tissue preservation and axonal density were observed in the combination therapy group. Findings from this study suggest that the combination theapy(DPY+ InDP + FG + MSCs) exhibits potential effects on the protection and regeneration of neural tissue after acute spinal cord injury. All procedures were approved by the Animal Bioethics and Welfare Committee(approval no. 178544; CSnBTBIBAJ 090812960)on August 15, 2016.
