Antibacterial enhancement of antibiotic activity by Enterolobium contortisiliquum(Vell.)Morong

Objective: To identify the main chemical classes of compounds from aqueous extract of Enterolobium contortisiliquum(E. contortisiliquum) seed bark and to evaluate its antibacterial activity, as well as its potential to increase the activity of antibiotics against strains of Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia ***: Different classes of compounds in the aqueous extract of E. contortisiliquum were evaluated based on the visual changes in the coloration and the formation of precipitate after the addition of specific reagents. The antibacterial activity of the extract and its potential to increase of antibiotic activity of antibiotics drugs, gentamicin and norfloxacin was determined by using the microdilution ***: Our results demonstrated that the following secondary metabolites were presented in E. contortisiliquum seed bark: flavones, flavonols, xanthones, flavononols,chalcones, aurones, flavones and catechins. The extract itself had very low antibacterial activity against all bacterial strains tested(MIC ≥ 1024 μg/m L), but there was an increase in the antibiotic activity of gentamicin and norfloxacin when combined in the subinhibitory concentration(i.e., MIC/8).Conclusions: Our data suggests that E. contortisiliquum seed bark may be an alternative source for new drugs with the potential to increase antibiotic activity against different strains of bacteria.

Pancreatic cancer is one of the most challenging diseases due to its often late diagnose which results in limited therapeutic options and poor *** date,the only curative treatment is complete tumor removal surgery but only a few patients are eligible to do *** median survival period after surgery followed by chemotherapy adjuvant treatment is about 2 *** its approval by the FDA,Gemcitabine has become the first-line chemotherapy agent for treatment of advanced pancreatic *** FOLFIRINOX regimen is also used as a treatment scheme for pancreatic cancer;however,this regimen has resulted in small improvements in overall patient’s *** is appropriated to clarify that the FOLFIRINOX regimen can only be administered in patients with good performance *** to the absence of outstanding result after patient’s treatment with diverse chemotherapeutic agents combinations or unsuccessful administration of single-agent drugs to treat pancreatic cancer,the immunotherapy has become a new hope.A more comprehensive understanding of cancer microenvironment and the chemical communication between cancer cells and immune cells can result in new therapeutic approaches that will improve the elimination of pancreatic cancer cells,enhancing life quality for these patients and increasing the overall survival.

Optimization of Expanded Polystyrene Lightweight Aggregate in Pre-Cast Concrete Blocks by a Completely Random Experimental Design (CRED) with Mixture and Process Variables

The aim of this study was to determine the optimum design mix to produce pre-cast concrete blocks by a completely random experimental design (CRED) with mixture and process variables. The polymerized concrete was studied its composition: Cement, and water defined as the mixture compounds. To choose the best model, all the possible models were assessed through the ANOVA, which tested each possible model. The linear-linear model was preferred, since that do not present evidence of lack of fit, and it is capable of relating how to react the process variables, when are changed the variable mixture condition levels. The optimum experimental condition, obtained for the polymerized concrete, was: The size of the polystyrene beads was 4.8 mm sized polystyrene beads, 5.0% polystyrene that replaced the aggregate, 18.3% cement, 73.4% aggregate and 8.3% water. In this condition, the blocks made with polymerized concrete show a compressive strength above 15 Mpa, allowing its utilization in paving.

Histological analysis and transcription profiles on somatic embryogenesis in interspecific hybrids of <i>Elaeis guineensis ×E. oleifera</i>

Elaeis guineensis (African oil palm) and E. oleifera (American oil palm) are bred to attain high oil yields, disease resistances, and decelerated shoot elongation. We cultivated immature zygotic embryos from backcrossed and F1 interspecific progenies on media containing 110, 150, or 200 mg·l-1 2,4-diclorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) to obtain embryogenic cultures. These were set to multiply on medium containing 8 mg·l-1 2,4-D or lower concentrations of auxins and finally we induced plantlets regeneration, from each zygotic embryo, independently, in order to have the clones organized according to their respective origins. Reductions in auxins induced cultures to revert from highly embryogenic into competent for embryogenesis and finally to organogenic degenerated callus lines. Histology and the expression of SOMATIC EMBRYOGENESIS RECEPTOR KINASE, DEHYDRIN, DEFENSIN, TRANSPOSASE, and LIPID TRANSFER PROTEIN were analyzed on four callus lines representative of morphological aspects consistently observed. The highest number of embryogenic cultures was obtained on 150 mg·l-1 2,4-D. Maturation and multiplication of somatic embryos through secondary embryogenesis occurred simultaneously on 8 mg·l-1 2,4-D. LIPID TRANSFER PROTEIN expression was detected in one of the embryogenic cultures and correlated with protoderm onset. Three six-week cycles on induction medium yielded 1.5 shoots above 6 cm per poly-embryogenic complex, which performed better than embryoids individualized mechanically. Rooting was observed for 77% and 82% of shoots from these two types of explants, respectively. Rooted plantlets ready for acclimatization were obtained nine months after shoot

Pyrolysis Oil from the Fruit and Cake of Jatropha curcas Produced Using a Low Temperature Conversion (LTC) Process: Analysis of a Pyrolysis Oil-Diesel Blend

Background: The LTC process is a technique that consists of heating solid residues at a temperature of 380oC - 420oC in an inert atmosphere and their products are evaluated individually: these products include pyrolysis oil, pyrolytic char, gas and water. The objective of this study was to compare the effects of the use of oils obtained by pyrolysis of Jatropha curcas as an additive for diesel in different proportions. Results: A Low Temperature Conversion (LTC) process carried out on samples of Jatropha curcas fruit and generated pyrolysis oil, pyrolyic char, gas and aqueous fractions in relative amounts of 23, 37, 16 and 14% [w/w] respectively for Jatropha curcas fruit and 19, 47, 12 and 22% [w/w] respectively for Jatropha curcas cake. The oil fractions were analyzed by FTIR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, GCMS and physicochemical analysis. The pyrolysis oil was added to final concentrations of 2, 5, 10 and 20% [w/w] to commercial diesel fuel. The density, viscosity, sulfur content and flash point of the mixtures were determined. Conclusions: The results indicated that the addition of the pyrolysis oil maintained the mixtures within the standards of the diesel directive, National Petroleum Agency (ANP no 15, of 19. 7. 2006), with the exception of the viscosity of the mixtures containing 20% pyrolysis oil.

AIM:To investigate the cytotoxic effects of spray-dried extracts of Phyllanthus niruri in combination with cisplatin on two cancer cell ***:Colorectal carcinoma(HT29) and human hepatocellular carcinoma(HepG2) cells were treated with spray-dried extracts of Phyllanthus niruri(SDEPN) either alone or in combination with cisplatin at different concentrations(0.5 mg/mL and 1 mg/mL) for 4 h and 24 *** verify and quantify cancer cells treated with these products as well as identify the cell cycle stage and cell viability,we stained the cells with propidium iodide and assessed them by flow *** percentage of cells in different cell cycle phases was quantified and data were expressed as *** differences between groups were determined using analysis of variance and Bonferroni's test,as indicated.A value of P 0.05) and HepG2(5.07 ± 0.3 vs 15.9 ± 1.04,P 0.05) and HepG2(14.56 ± 1.6 vs 35.67 ± 3.94,P < 0.001) cells when compared to control cells for 24 *** cell lines were killed by cisplatin in a dose-dependent manner compared to control cells(HepG2 cells for 4 h:10.78 ± 1.58 vs 53.89 ± 1.53,P < 0.001;24 h:8.9 ± 1.43 vs 62.78 ± 1.87,P < 0.001 and HT29 cells for 4 h:9.52 ± 0.913 vs 49.86 ± 2.89,P < 0.001;24 h:11.78 ± 1.05 vs 53.34 ± 2.65,P < 0.001).In HT29 cells,pretreatment with SDEPN and subsequent treatment with cis-platin resulted in a greater number of cells being killed(12.78 ± 1.01 vs 93.76 ± 1.6,P < 0.001).HepG2 cells showed significant cell killing with treatment with SDEPN when combined with cisplatin(12.87 ± 2.78 vs 78.8 ± 3.02,P < 0.001).CONCLUSION:SDEPN is selectively toxic against two cancer cell ***,SDEPN in combinati

The paracetamol has more antioxidant properties than the salicylic acid on the several oxidative stress-forced models and one possible mechanism is due to electron or hydrogen transfer by the evaluated hydroxyl radicals. The antioxidant mechanism for the compounds studied here was performed by molecular modeling using quantum chemical calculations at the B3LYP level of theory. Our results show that the paracetamol has more antioxidant properties than the salicylic acid in experimental and theoretical studies. The theoretical mechanism show that the hydrogen transfer is more favorable than the electron transfer. From the study it was concluded that the electron abstraction for paracetamol is more favored than salicylic acid.
