Finite element models to represent seismic activity of the Indian plate

Quantification of seismic activity is one of the most challenging problems faced by earthquake engineers in probabilistic seismic hazard analysis. Currently, this problem has been attempted using empirical approaches which are based on the regional earthquake recurrence relations from the available earth- quake catalogue. However, at a specified site of engineering interest, these empirical models are asso- ciated with large number of uncertainties due to lack of sufficient data. Due to these uncertainties, engineers need to develop mechanistic models to quantify seismic activity. A wide range of techniques for modeling continental plates provides useful insights on the mechanics of plates and their seismic activity. Among the different continental plates, the Indian plate experiences diffused seismicity. In India, although Himalaya is regarded as a plate boundary and active region, the seismicity database indicates that there are other regions in the Indian shield reporting sporadic seismic activity. It is expected that mechanistic models of Indian plate, based on finite element method, simulate stress fields that quantify the seismic potential of active regions in India, this article explores the development of a finite element model for Indian plate by observing the simulated stress field for various boundary conditions, geological and theological conditions. the study observes that the magnitude and direction of stresses in the plate is sensitive to these conditions, the numerical analysis of the models shows that the simulated stress field represents the active seismic zones in India.

In the analysis and design of important structures with relatively long life spans, there is a need to generate strong motion data for possible large events. the source of an earthquake is characterized by the spatial distribution of slip on the fault plane. For future events, this is unknown. In this paper, a stochastic earthquake source model is developed to address this issue. Here, 1D and 2D stochastic models for slip distribution developed by Lavallée et al.(2006) are used. the random field associated with the slip distribution is heavy-tailed stable distribution which can be used for large events. Using 236 past rupture models, the spectral scaling parameter and the four stable or Levy's parameters against empirical relationship for known quantities like magnitude or fault length are developed. the model is validated with data from 411 stations of 1999 Chi-Chi earthquake. the simulated response spectrum showed good agreement to actual data. Further the proposed model is used to generate ground motion for the 1993 Killari Earthquake where strong motion data is not available. the simulated mean peak ground velocity was in turn related to the intensity(MsK) and compared against values in the literature.

Background:Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is the most common cause of cancer-related death in saudi *** study aimed to investigate the patterns of HCC and the effect of tNM staging,Alfa-fetoprotein(AFP),and Child-turcotte Pugh(CtP)on patients’overall survival(Os).Methods:A retrospective analysis was conducted on 43 HCC patients at a single oncology center in saudi Arabia from 2015 to *** patients had to fulfill one of the following criteria:(a)a liver lesion reported as definitive HCC on dynamic imaging and/or(b)a biopsy-confirmed ***:the mean patient age of all HCC cases was 66.8 with a male-to-female ratio of 3.3:*** patients were stratified into two groups:viral HCC(n=22,51%)and non-viral HCC(n=21,49%).Among viral-HCC patients,55%were due to HBV and 45%due to *** was diagnosed in 79%of *** and sex did not significantly statistically differ in Os among viral and non-viral HCC patients(p-value>0.05).About 65%of patients had tumor size>5 cm during the diagnosis,with a significant statistical difference in Os(p-value=0.027).AFP was>400 ng/ml in 45%of the *** was a statistically significant difference in the Os in terms of AFP levels(p-value=0.021).A statistically significant difference was also observed between the CtP score and Os(p-value=0.02).CtP class B had the longest *** was the most common treatment provided to HCC patients followed by sorafenib *** was a significant statistical difference in Os among viral and non-viral HCC patients(p-value=0.008).Conclusions:the most common predictors for Os were the underlying cause of HCC,AFP,and tumor *** having non-viral etiology,a tumor size>5 cm,an AFP>400 ng/mL,and a CtP score class C were all negatively associated with Os.

this paper investigates the free vibration and transient response of interconnected structures including double curved beams and intermediate straight beams,which are all constructed from functionally graded porous(FgP) materials. the strain potential and kinetic energies of each beam along with the work done by the external force are calculated. Additionally, a higher-order beam element is introduced to derive stiffness and mass matrices, along with the force vector. the curved and straight beams are discretized, and their assembled stiffness, mass matrices, and force vectors, are *** conditions at the joints are used to derive the total matrices of the entire structure. subsequently, the natural frequencies and transient response of the system are determined. the accuracy of the mathematical model and the self-developed computer program is validated through the comparison of the obtained results with those of the existing literature and commercial software ANsYs, demonstrating excellent ***, a comprehensive study is conducted to investigate the effects of various parameters on the free vibration and transient response of the considered structure.

Design of a robust production facility layout with minimum handling cost （MHC） presents an appropriate approach to tackle facility layout problems in a dynamic volatile environment, in which product demands randomly change in each planning period. the objective of the design is to find the robust facility layout with minimum total material handling cost over the entire multiperiod planning horizon. this paper proposes a new mathematical model for designing robust machine layout in the stochastic dynamic environment of manufacturing systems using quadratic assignment problem （QAP） formulation. In this investigation, product demands are assumed to be normally distributed random variables with known expected value, variance, and covariance that randomly change from period to period. the proposed model was verified and validated using randomly generated numerical data and benchmark examples. the effect of dependent product demands and varying interest rate on the total cost function of the proposed model has also been investigated. sensitivity analysis on the proposed model has been performed. Dynamic programming and simulated annealing optimization algorithms were used in solving the modeled example problems.

Bake-Hardening Response of High Martensite Dual-Phase steel with Different Morphologies and Volume Fractions

Bake-hardening behaviour of carbon steel with different martensite morphologies and volume fraction was investigated. the specimens with fibrous and bulky martensite were prestrained in tension by 4%. After this, they were unloaded and bake hardened at 180 ℃ for 10-160 min. It was found that dual-phase steel samples which were bake hardened at 180 ℃ for 20 rain showed an increase in the yield stress （Ys） and ultimate tensile stress （Uts） but a decrease in ductility. Further increase in the bake-hardening time of 80 or 160 min has reduced the Ys and Uts, but increased the ductility. △σ （increase in stress due to bake hardening）, Ys and Uts values are higher for the microstructure containing fibrous martensite compared to the microstructure-containing bulky martensite. It was also observed that at a given baking temperature Aa, Ys and Uts increased by volume of martensite.

We consider particular compatible orders on a given completely simple semi- group sx= M（（x）; I, A; P） where （x） is an ordered cyclic group with x 〉 1 and p11= x-1. Of these, only the lexicographic and bootlace orders yield residuated semigroups. With the lexicographic order, sx is orthodox and has a biggest idempotent. With the bootlace order, the maximal idempotents of sx are identified by specific locations in the sandwich matrix. In the orthodox case there is also a biggest idempotent and, for sandwich matrices of a given size, uniqueness up to ordered semigroup isomorphism is established.

Quenched and tempered steels are prone to hydrogen induced cracking in the heat affected zone after welding. the use of austenitic stainless steel consumables to weld the above steel was the only available remedy because of higher solubility for hydrogen in austenitic phase. In this investigation, an attempt was made to determine a suitable consumable to replace expensive austenitic consumables. two different consumables, namely, austenitie stain less steel and low hydrogen ferritic steel, were used to fabricate the joints by shielded metal are welding （sMAW） and flux cored arc welding （FCAW） processes. the joints fabricated by using low hydrogen ferritic steel consumables showed superior transverse tensile properties, whereas joints fabricated by using austenitic stainless steel consumables exhibited better impact toughness, irrespective of the welding process used. the sMAW joints exhibited superior mechanical and impact properties, irrespective of the consumables used, than their FCAW counterparts.
