Supercritical fluid technology as a sustainable alternative method for textile dyeing:An approach on waste,energy,and CO_(2)emission reduction

The clothing industry is considered one of the most polluting industries on the planet due to the high consumption of water,energy,chemicals/dyes,and high generation of solid waste and effluents.Faced with environmental concerns,the textile ennoblement sector is the most critical of the textile production chain,especially the traditional dyeing processes.As an alternative to current problems,dyeing with supercritical CO_(2)(scCO_(2))has been presented as a clean and efficient process for a sustainable textile future.Supercritical fluid dyeing(SFD)has shown a growing interest due to its significant impact on environmental preservation and social,economic,and financial gains.The main SFD benefits include economy and reuse of non-adsorbed dyes;reduction of process time and energy expenditure;capture of atmospheric CO_(2)(greenhouse gas);use and recycling of CO_(2)in SFD;generation of carbon credits;water-free process;effluent-free process;reduction of CO_(2)emission and auxiliary chemicals.despite being still a non-scalable and evolving technology,SFD is the future of dyeing.This review presented a comprehensive overview of the environmental impacts caused by traditional processes and confronted the advantages of SFD.The SFD technique was introduced,along with its latest advances and future perspectives.Financial and environmental gains were also discussed.

Retention of eucalyptus harvest residues reduces soil compaction caused by deep subsoiling

Eucalyptus harvesting,forwarding and soil tillage operations are among the main causes for compaction of forest soils,with potential impacts on productivity.This concern is especially important in areas with soils that are naturally compacted(fragipans and duripans).In these soils,tillage operations include the use of subsoilers that can reach depths of more than one meter and require heavy tractors that exert high pressure on the soil.One of the ways to try to minimize the effect of this compaction is by retaining harvest residues.The objective of this study was to evaluate the impacts of eucalyptus harvesting on soil physical attributes,as well as to determine the potential of different types of residue management to reduce compaction from the soil tillage operation.Two experiments were conducted in the same area with a Yellow Argisol.In the first experiment,compaction caused by mechanized harvesting with harvester+forwarder was evaluated.In the second experiment,different managements of harvest residues were examined as potential modifiers of soil compaction during tillage for new plantings.For this,three managements systems were tested:(1)retention of all harvest residues and litter from the previous rotation(HR+L),(2)retention of litter from the previous rotation(L),and(3)removal of harvest residues and litter from the previous rotation(WR).Before and after harvest,sampling was carried out in the planting rows and inter-rows,and after tillage,samples were collected in the traffic line of the subsoiler-tractor set.In both experiments,undisturbed soil samples were collected from the center of the 0-10,10-20,20-40,40-60,and 60-100 cm layers to determine soil density and total porosity.In each period and site of evaluation,mechanical resistance to penetration up to the 60-cm depth was also determined.The harvesting operation increased soil density at 0-10 and 60-100 cm depths only in the inter-rows.Retention of harvest residues and litter(HR+L)after harvesting avoided increases in soil density and penetration re

Multiple ecological strategies explain the distribution of exotic and native C_(4) grasses in heterogeneous early successional sites in Hawai’i

Aims Biotic homogenization results in novel communities contain-ing multiple exotic species.Many attributes that contribute to the dominance of invaders and increase invasibility of communities have been identified,but rarely have factors governing the domi-nance of co-occurring invaders been considered.Here we assess the presence and performance of five exotic and one native C_(4) grass species across local(microsite)and more broad-scale variation in fire history,soil age,altitude and precipitation.We ask whether species show preferences for the same conditions,whether all are constrained by poor soil development,and how their performance changes when alone versus co-occurring.In addition to providing information useful to managers who want to control some of these species,such information can help to predict how distributions might change with climate change Methods We measured percent cover and plant height of each grass species in 64 plots in each of 15 sites,located in young volcanic substrates across environmental gradients in Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park,Hawai’i,USA.Sites varied in fire history and soil age,across altitu-dinal and precipitation gradients.We estimated microsite heteroge-neity by measuring rock cover and soil depth,where each species was present and in plots as a whole.We analyzed effects of pos-sible controlling variables using chi-square tests and Generalized Additive Mixed Models.Important Findings Two species(Schizachyrium condensatum and Hyparrhenia rufa)were absent in shallow soil,restricted to more mesic sites and showed increasing performance with soil depth.By contrast,two other species(Andropogon virginicus and Melinis repens)tended to occur in shal-low soil with high rock cover across a wide range of sites.One addi-tional species(Melinis minutiflora)was weakly affected by soil depth and was the dominant at higher elevation(more mesic)and on burned sites,especially in old soil.This species was largely absent from lower elevation sites,where the more widespread and opportunistic

Protein profile of leprosy patients with plantar ulcers from the Eastern Amazon region

Background:Studies investigating the nutritional status of patients with leprosy and plantar ulcers are sparse.Therefore,the objective of this study was to describe the protein profile of leprosy patients with plantar ulcers from the Eastern Amazon region.Methods:A case record form was created for 75 patients with leprosy(31 with plantar ulcers and 44 without plantar ulcers)with the following data:sociodemographic characteristics,clinical form of leprosy,presence or absence of plantar ulcers,and nutritional assessment using anthropometry consisting of the measurement of body mass index,arm circumference,arm muscle circumference,and triceps skinfold.Levels of blood albumin,transferrin,and C-reactive protein(CRP)were also measured.Data regarding protein intake were obtained using a Food Frequency Questionnaire.Results:Plantar ulcers occurred more frequently in male patients(67.7%),patients aged 40-49 years(mean±SD:47.3±8.0 years),and patients receiving 300 or 600 USD(71.0%).The mean weight and height of patients were 71.6±11.4 kg and 1.62±0.1 m,respectively.High levels of CRP were detected in 51.6%of leprosy patients with plantar ulcers and only 9.1%of patients without plantar ulcers(Pdepletion of transferrin was observed in 14.3%of patients with paucibacillary leprosy and 44.3%of patients with multibacillary leprosy(P=0.0447).Most patients had normal levels of serum albumin(74.2%with plantar ulcers and 77.3%without plantar ulcers).Conclusions:Most leprosy patients with plantar ulcers have normal levels of serum albumin and transferrin and high CRP levels,which indicates the presence of an inflammatory process.Our findings suggest the need to monitor patients with leprosy to prevent the occurrence of plantar ulcers and to provide adequate treatment for patients with existing plantar ulcers.

BACKGROUND: Gastric bypass is a widespread bariatric procedure that carries a high incidence of gallstone formation postoperatively. Controversy exists regarding the importance and consequences of gallstones in these patients. There are surgeons who consider gallstone-related complications after gastric bypass important enough to require routine removal of the gallbladder during gastric bypass (prophylactic cholecystectomy). However, this can lead to increased costs and risks. This study aimed to identify complications related to cholelithiasis after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGBP). METHODS: This is a prospective observational study of 40 morbidly obese patients free of gallbladder disease. The patients underwent open RYGBP at a public hospital in Brazil from February to October 2007. They were followed up clinically and ultrasonographically at 6 months and 1, 2, and 3 years after surgery. Of the patients, 38 patients were followed up for 3 years. RESULTS: Eleven patients (28.9%) developed cholelithiasis, four (10.5%) experienced biliary pain, and 2 suffered from acute biliary pancreatitis (5.3%). These patients had their gallbladders removed laparoscopically. No patient presented with acute cholecystitis, choledocholithiasis, or bile duct dilation during the follow-up period. There were no deaths. CONCLUSIONS: Gallstone-related complications after RYGBP were relatively common. Some of these complications, like acute pancreatitis, are known to have potentially severe outcomes. It seems reasonable to perform cholecystectomy during gastric bypass in the presence of cholelithiasis or after this procedure if gallstones develop.

Though they reduce microorganism growth, current hospital disinfectants also damage many of today’s modern electronic devices such as tablets and smartphones. Herein, the efficacy of a new chlorhexidine digluconate gel (CDG) was tested as a disinfectant for mobile and electronic devices in a clinical environment. Specifically, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus were used to infect the screen of eight smartphones. The CDG was prepared at concentrations of 2%, 4% and 6%, and tested on paper disks infected with these bacteria before being tested on the smartphones. The devices were disinfected with the CDG gel (4%) at two times: immediately and after 5 min of the bacterial contamination. In all cases, the CDG gel eliminated 100% of gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms compared to the control (without any agent). In addition, the gel did not damage the smartphones. Therefore, our study suggests that the CDG gel may be applied to disinfect a wide range of electronic devices for health care professionals in the hospital environment.

Inductive Model Generation for Text Classification Using a Bipartite Heterogeneous Network

Algorithms for numeric data classification have been applied for text classification. Usually the vector space model is used to represent text collections. The characteristics of this representation such as sparsity and high dimensionality sometimes impair the quality of general-purpose classifiers. Networks can be used to represent text collections, avoiding the high sparsity and allowing to model relationships among different objects that compose a text collection. Such network- based representations can improve the quality of the classification results. One of the simplest ways to represent textual collections by a network is through a bipartite heterogeneous network, which is composed of objects that represent the documents connected to objects that represent the terms. Heterogeneous bipartite networks do not require computation of similarities or relations among the objects and can be used to model any type of text collection. Due to the advantages of representing text collections through bipartite heterogeneous networks, in this article we present a text classifier which builds a classification model using the structure of a bipartite heterogeneous network. Such an algorithm, referred to as IMBHN （Inductive Model Based on Bipartite Heterogeneous Network）, induces a classification model assigning weights to objects that represent the terms for each class of the text collection. An empirical evaluation using a large amount of text collections from different domains shows that the proposed IMBHN algorithm produces significantly better results than k-NN, C4.5, SVM, and Naive Bayes algorithms.

Quantum Codes Do Not Increase Fidelity against Isotropic Errors

In this article, we study the ability of error-correcting quantum codes to increase the fidelity of quantum states throughout a quantum computation. We analyze arbitrary quantum codes that encode all qubits involved in the computation, and we study the evolution of n-qubit fidelity from the end of one application of the correcting circuit to the end of the next application. We assume that the correcting circuit does not introduce new errors, that it does not increase the execution time (i.e. its application takes zero seconds) and that quantum errors are isotropic. We show that the quantum code increases the fidelity of the states perturbed by quantum errors but that this improvement is not enough to justify the use of quantum codes. Namely, we prove that, taking into account that the time interval between the application of the two corrections is multiplied (at least) by the number of qubits n (due to the coding), the best option is not to use quantum codes, since the fidelity of the uncoded state over a time interval n times smaller is greater than that of the state resulting from the quantum code correction.

Qualitative antibody tests are an easy,point-of-care diagnostic method that is useful in diagnosing coronavirus disease 2019,especially in situations where reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction is negative.However,some factors are able to affect its sensitivity and accuracy,which may contribute to these tests not being used as a first-line diagnostic tool.

Background: Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease classified into two subgroups for therapeutic purposes:paucibacillary(PB)and multibacillary(MB),closely related to the host immune responses.In this context it is noteworthy looking for immunological biomarkers applicable as complementary diagnostic tools as well as a laboratorial strategy to follow-up leprosy household contacts.Methods:: The cross-sectional study enrolled 49 participants,including 19 patients and 30 healthy controls.Peripheral blood mononuclear cells(PBMC)were isolated and incubated in the presence of Mycobacterium leprae bacilli.The cells were prepared for surface(CD4+and CD8+)and intracytoplasmic cytokine staining(IFN-γ,IL-4 and IL-10).Multiple comparisons amongst groups were carried out by ANOVA,Kruskal–Wallis,Student T or Mann–Whitney test.Comparative analysis of categorical variables was performed by Chi-square.Functional biomarker signature analysis was conducted using the global median values for each biomarker index as the cut-off edge to identify the proportion of subjects with high biomarker levels.Results: The cytokine signature analysis demonstrated that leprosy patients presented a polyfunctional profile of T-cells subsets,with increased frequency of IFN-γ+T-cell subsets along with IL-10+and IL-4+from CD4+T-cells,as compared to health Controls(Venn diagram report).Moreover,statistical analysis was carried out using parametric or non-parametric variance analysis followed by pairwise multiple comparisons,according to the data normality distribution.L(PB)displayed a polyfunctional profile characterized by enhanced percentage of IFN-γ+,IL-10+and IL-4+produced by most T-cell subsets,as compared to L(MB)that presented a more restricted cytokine functional profile mediated by IL-10+and IL-4+T-cells with minor contribution of IFN-γproduced by CD4+T-cells.Noteworthy was that HHC(MB)exhibited enhanced frequency of IFN-γ+T-cells,contrasting with HHC(PB)that presented a cytokine profile limited to IL-10 and IL-4.Conclusions: Our data demonstra
