Members of the genus Juglans are monecious wind-pollinated trees in the family Juglandaceae with highly heterozygous genomes,which greatly complicates genome sequence *** genomes of interspecific hybrids are usually comprised of haploid genomes of parental *** exploited this attribute of interspecific hybrids to avoid heterozygosity and sequenced an interspecific hybrid Juglans microcarpa×*** using a novel combination of single-molecule sequencing and optical genome mapping *** resulting assemblies of both genomes were remarkably complete including chromosome termini and centromere *** termini consisted of arrays of telomeric repeats about 8 kb long and heterochromatic subtelomeric regions about 10 kb *** centromeres consisted of arrays of a centromere-specific Gypsy retrotransposon and most contained genes,many of them *** genomes evolved by a whole-genome-duplication dating back to the cretaceous-Paleogene boundary and consist of two subgenomes,which were fractionated by numerous short gene deletions evenly distributed along the length of the *** was shown to be asymmetric with one subgenome exhibiting greater gene loss than the *** asymmetry of the process is ongoing and mirrors an asymmetry in gene expression between the *** the importance of ***×*** hybrids as potential walnut rootstocks,we catalogued disease resistance genes in the parental genomes and studied their chromosomal *** also estimated the molecular clock rates for woody perennials and deployed them in estimating divergence times of Juglans genomes and those of other woody perennials.

The role of radiation for pancreatic adenocarcinoma

Pancreatic cancer is an aggressive malignancy with a high recurrence rate even after curative-intent *** in survival have not been achieved in the last 25 years thus highlighting the need for effective multimodal treatment *** role of radiation therapy for pancreatic cancer remains ill-defined due to historical lack of a standard definition of resectability,and the use of antiquated radiation delivery techniques and chemotherapy *** level I data regarding neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy for resectable and borderline resectable pancreatic adenocarcinoma(PDAc)are limited to 2 randomized controlled trials and several retrospective studies and suggest that it may lead to an increased likelihood of a margin-negative resection and certainly allows for improved patient selection for pancreaticoduodenectomy when compared to upfront *** the adjuvant setting,data are similarly lacking but suggest that chemoradiotherapy may be beneficial for patients at high risk of locoregional *** we review existing data regarding the role of radiation in PDAc.

Anisotropic iron-doping patterns in two-dimensional cobalt oxide nanoislands on Au(111)

An in teg rated approach combi ning den sity functional theory(DFT)calculati ons and atomic resol utio n sea nning tun neling microscopy(STM)is used to study well-defined iron-doped cobalt oxide nanoislands supported on Au(111).The focus is on the structure and distribution of Fe dopants within these nanoislands of coO as a function of Fe to co *** DFT and STM results agree strongly and complement each other to allow for a more complete un dersta nding of the dopa nt structure trends on the nano *** Fe as a marker,we first find that the stacki ng seque nee of the moire structure of the host cobalt oxide nano islands can be ide ntified un ambiguously through a combinati on of DFT and *** the distinct con trast of the embedded Fe dopa nt atoms as observed with atom-resolved STM,we find correlatio ns betwee n Fe dopa nt positi on and the coO/Au(111)moire patter n at varyi ng Fe dopa nt den *** n of Fe-dopa nt clusters within the nano islands is investigated in detail through DFT and found to agree with the dopant patter ns observed in *** find that the structural effects of Fe dopants throughout the nanoislands with the basal planes and the two types of edges—the oxygen and metal edges—have different *** DFT calculations and STM images show a strong preferenee for Fe dopants to be located directly on or near the oxygen edge of the nanoislands as opposed to being directly on or n ear the metal *** n together,our results illustrate that Fe dopa nt incorporati on and distributi on within coO nanoislands are highly an isotropic and gover ned by both the moire structure of the basal planes as well as nano-size effects present at the under-coordinated edges of different local geometry and chemistries.

We present the structural,morphological and photocatalytic properties of stretchable composites made with carbon nanotubes (cNTs),silicon rubber and Ni@TiO_(2):W nanoparticles(TiWNi NPs) with average size of 37±2 *** images showed that the TiWNi NPs decorated the surface of the cNT fibers,which are oriented in a preferential *** NPs presented a mixture of anatase/rutile phases with cubic *** performance of the TiWNi powders and stretchable composites was evaluated for the photocatalytic degradation of diclofenac (DcF) anti-inflammatory drug under ultraviolet-visible *** results revealed that the maximum DcF degradation percentages were 34.6%,91.9%,97.1%,98.5%and 100%for the cNT composite (stretched at 0%),TiWNi powders,cNT+TiWNi(stretched at 0%),cNT+TiWNi (stretched at 50%) and cNT+TiWNi (stretched at 100%),***,stretching the cNT+TiWNi composites was a good strategy to enhance the DcF degradation percentage from 97.1%to 100%,since stretching created additional defects (oxygen vacancies) that acted as electron sink,delaying the electron-hole recombination,and favors the DcF ***/absorbance measurements confirmed the presence of such ***,the reactive oxygen species (ROS) were determined by the scavenger’s experiments and found that the main ROS were the·OH and O_(2)-radicals,which attacked the DcF molecules,causing their *** results of this investigation confirmed that the stretchable cNT/TiWNi-based composites are a viable alternative to remove pharmaceutical contaminants from water and can be manually separated from the decontaminated water,which is unviable using photocatalytic powders.

Low platelet count: Predictor of death and graft loss after liver transplantation

BAcKGROUND The impact of platelets on liver transplantation(LT) is well recognized, but not completely understood. Platelets exert dichotomous effects on the graft and on the patient. On the one hand, they are essential for primary hemostasis and tissue repair and regeneration. On the other hand, they support ischemia/reperfusion injury and inflammatory processes. Recent evidence has shown a new role for platelet count(Pc) in predicting outcomes after *** To evaluate if low Pc is a predictor of short-and long-term outcomes after *** Four hundred and eighty consecutive LT patients were retrospectively *** from the preoperative to the seventh postoperative day(POD) were considered. c-statistic analysis defined the ideal cutoff point for Pc. cox regression was performed to check whether low Pc was a predictor of death,retransplantation or primary changes in graft function within one year after *** The highest median Pc was 86 × 109/L [interquartile range(IQR) = 65–100 ×109/L] on seventh POD, and the lowest was 51 × 109/L(IQR = 38–71 × 109/L) on third POD. The c-statistic defined a Pc cutoff point for predicting death and retransplantation. In the multivariate analysis, platelets ctor for death at 12 mo after LT [hazard ratio(HR) = 2.01; 95% confidence interval(cI) 1.06-3.79;P = 0.031]. In the cox regression, patients with Pc cI 1.52-4.99; P =0.001).cONcLUSION Pc ctor of death in the first year after LT. These results are in agreement with other studies that indicate that low Pc after LT is associated with negative outcomes.

Tribological performance of iron- and nickel-base self-lubricating claddings containing metal sulfides at high temperature

Iron-based coatings with the incorporation of solid lubricants have been prepared by means of laser cladding,in an effort to control friction and decrease tool wear at high temperatures during metal forming *** choice of a Fe-based powder has been considered advantageous,as it can lead to decreased costs compared to nickel-based claddings previously studied by the authors,in addition to having a lower environmental *** particular,the incorporation of transition metal dichalcogenides such as MoS_(2) as precursors leads to the encapsulation of silver in Fe-based self-lubricating claddings,resulting in a uniform distribution of the soft metal across the thickness of the *** tribological evaluation of the claddings at high temperatures shows that the addition of lubricious compounds leads to lower friction at room temperature and significantly decreased wear up to 600℃ compared to the unmodified iron-based reference alloy,although higher than similar self-lubricating Ni-based *** order to cast light into these observed differences,the corresponding microstructures,phase composition,and self-lubricating mechanisms have been studied and compared for Fe-and Ni-based claddings having both of them the addition of silver and MoS_(2).The results suggest a key role of the formation of protective tribolayers on the counter body during high temperature sliding *** simulation of the phase evolution during solidification reveals that the formation of different chromium-and nickel-based metal sulfides in Fe-and Ni-claddings during laser cladding by the decomposition of MoS_(2) plays a key role in determining their tribological behaviour at high temperatures.

Mechanically induced ca^(2+) oscillations in osteocytes release extracellular vesicles and enhance bone formation

The vast osteocytic network is believed to orchestrate bone metabolic activity in response to mechanical stimuli through production of sclerostin, RANKL, and osteoprotegerin(OPG). However, the mechanisms of osteocyte mechanotransduction remain poorly understood. We've previously shown that osteocyte mechanosensitivity is encoded through unique intracellular calcium (ca^(2+) ) dynamics. Here, by simultaneously monitoring ca^(2+) and actin dynamics in single cells exposed to fluid shear flow, we detected actin network contractions immediately upon onset of flow-induced ca^(2+) transients, which were facilitated by smooth muscle myosin and further confirmed in native osteocytes ex vivo. Actomyosin contractions have been linked to the secretion of extracellular vesicles(EVs), and our studies demonstrate that mechanical stimulation upregulates EV production in osteocytes through immunostaining for the secretory vesicle marker Lysosomal-associated membrane protein 1(LAMP1) and quantifying EV release in conditioned medium, both of which are blunted when ca^(2+) signaling was inhibited by neomycin. Axial tibia compression was used to induce anabolic bone formation responses in mice, revealing upregulated LAMP1 and expected downregulation of sclerostin in vivo. This load-related increase in LAMP1 expression was inhibited in neomycin-injected mice compared to ***-computed tomography revealed significant load-related increases in both trabecular bone volume fraction and cortical thickness after two weeks of loading, which were blunted by neomycin treatment. In summary, we found mechanical stimulation of osteocytes activates ca^(2+) -dependent contractions and enhances the production and release of EVs containing bone regulatory proteins. Further, blocking ca^(2+) signaling significantly attenuates adaptation to mechanical loading in vivo, suggesting a critical role for ca^(2+) -mediated signaling in bone adaptation.
