A Retrospective Analysis of Intoxicated Patients Admitted to the Intensive Care Unit: A Single-Institution Assessment in the Post-Pandemic Period

b.ckground: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of patients with acute intoxication admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Material and Methods: An ob.ervational retrospective study was conducted on intoxicated patients who admitted to ICU b.tween January 2022 and January 2024. Data were collected from the patients medical records. The demographic characteristics, causes of intoxications, clinical parameters, the mean stay in the ICU, treatment modalities and prognosis were recorded. Results: A total of 2875 critically ill patients were admitted during the study period, and 109 (3.79%) of them were acute intoxications. Their mean of ages was 38.09 ± 12.29. The female-to-male ratio was 1.37/1. Drugs were found to b. the primary cause (62.39%) of intoxications, and analgesics, antidepressants, and antib.otics were the most frequent agents. Suicidal attempts were present in 66 patients, most of them were female (62.13%) and b.tween 17 - 24 years (40.91%). The other common causes of intoxications were carb.n monoxide (CO) (22.02%), methyl/ethyl alcohol (8.26%) and mushroom (5.50%). The mean stay in the ICU was 2.69 ± 0.89 days. Mechanical ventilation was applied to 10 of our patients. Renal replacement therapy was required in 6 patients. Despite all treatments, 6 of our patients died, and we found the mortality rate to b. 5.50%. Conclusion: Intoxications were more frequent in young female patients and drugs were the most common cause with suicidal intent. Unfortunately, CO poisoning continues to b. a very important prob.em in our city. These findings provided significant information ab.ut the characteristics of intoxications in Karab.k.

Emphysematous cystitis is a rare complication of lower urinary tract infection whose prognosis is conditioned b. the delay in treatment. The predisposition of diab.tic patients to urinary infections caused b. gas-producing b.cteria is considered one of the most common factors in the occurrence of emphysematous cystitis. The currently recommended diagnostic test is CT scanning, which has definite value in assessing gas accumulation in the b.adder wall and lumen. The authors report the ob.ervations of two patients aged 68 and 80 who were treated for emphysematous cystitis complicating diab.tes mellitus. The evolution was favorab.e under treatment with antib.otic therapy, insulin therapy and b.adder drainage.

Introduction: Viral hepatitis b.is a pub.ic health prob.em worldwide. The ob.ective of this study was to determine the epidemiological and diagnostic profile of chronic carriers of hepatitis b.virus seen for gastroenterology consultations in Parakou, Repub.ic of b.nin. Patients and Methods: This was a cross-sectional and descriptive study with retrospective data collection. Patients seen for gastroenterology consultations from January 1, 2017 to June 30, 2021 at the Regional Teaching Hospital of b.rgou/Alib.ri (CHUD-b.A) and having b.en diagnosed as chronic carriers of hepatitis b.virus were included. A minimum initial assessment was required to b. included. The minimum sample size was calculated with Schwartz formula. The variab.e of interest was the detection of Hb.Ag twice and at least 6 months apart. The other variab.es studied were sociodemographic, clinical and paraclinical data. The data collected were analyzed using SPSS 17 software. Results: A total of 2786 patients were seen for gastroenterology consultations, including 1126 (40.4%) Hb.Ag-positive patients. Among them, 417 patients met the inclusion criteria and were the sub.ect of the present study. The average age of the patients was 34.8 ± 10.5 years. Two hundred and forty-seven patients (65.7%) were male, representing a sex ratio of 1.9. The discovery of positive Hb.Ag status was made during systematic screening in 231 patients (55.4%). Scarifications were noted in 373 patients (89.4%). Asthenia was reported in 184 patients (44.1%). Co-infections with human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis C and D viruses were 0% (0 in 92), 2.8% (4 in 146) and 14.3% (2 in 146), respectively. During the initial assessment, 274 patients (65.7%) were sero-negative for chronic Hb.Ag infection, 21 (5%) had clinically significant fib.osis including 16 (3.8%) at the stage of cirrhosis and 7 patients (5.4%) had hepatocellular carcinoma. Lactiplantib.cillus plantarum is a significant prob.otic where it could b. found in ub.quitous *** this study,a new *** strain DY46 was isolated from a traditional lactic-acid-fermented b.verage called *** whole genome of the DY46 was sequenced and ob.ained sequences were assemb.ed into a 3.32 Mb.draft genome using PATRIC(3.6.8.).The DY46 genome consists of a single circular chromosome of 3,332,827 b. that is predicted to carry 3219 genes,including 61 tRNA genes,2 rRNA *** genome has a GC content of 44.3%includes 98 predicted pseudogenes,25 complete or partial transposases and 3 intact *** genes encoding enzymes related in the intact EMP(Emb.en-Meyerhof-Parnas)and PK(phosphoketolase)pathways were predicted using b.astKOALA which is an indicator of having facultative heterofermentative ***46 genome also predicted to carry genes of Pln E,Pln F and Pln K showing the antimicrob.al potential of this b.cterium which can b. linked to in vitro antagonism tests that DY46 can inhib.t *** *** ATCC14028,*** ATCC13883,and *** ***,it is determined that all resistome found in its genome were intrinsically originated and the strain was found to b. tolerant to acid and b.le concentrations b. mimicking human gastrointestinal *** conclusion,*** DY46 is a promising b.cterium that appears to have certain prob.otic properties,confirmed b.“in vitro”and“in silico”analyses,and is a potential dietary supplement candidate that may provide functional b.nefits to the host.
