Video question answering(Video QA)involves a thorough understanding of video content and question language,as well as the grounding of the textual semantic to the visual content of videos.Thus,to answer the questions more accurately,not only the semantic entity should be associated with certain visual instance in video frames,but also the action or event in the question should be localized to a corresponding temporal slot.It turns out to be a more challenging task that requires the ability of conducting reasoning with correlations between instances along temporal frames.In this paper,we propose an instance-sequence reasoning network for video question answering with instance grounding and temporal localization.In our model,both visual instances and textual representations are firstly embedded into graph nodes,which benefits the integration of intra-and inter-modality.Then,we propose graph causal convolution(GCC)on graph-structured sequence with a large receptive field to capture more causal connections,which is vital for visual grounding and instance-sequence reasoning.Finally,we evaluate our model on TVQA+dataset,which contains the groundtruth of instance grounding and temporal localization,three other Video QA datasets and three multimodal language processing datasets.Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness and generalization of the proposed method.Specifically,our method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods on these benchmarks.

This paper reviewed the corrosion behavior of metals in simulated deep-water environments and briefly discussed the effect of hydrostatic pressure on the different corrosion types for the active and the passive alloys.A consensus on the corrosion mechanism is that hydrostatic pressure accelerates the dissolution kinetics,changes the chemical compositions of the product layer or passive films,and promotes the adsorption of Cl^(-)on the metal surface.In addition,a newly-developed mechanism that hydrostatic pressure facilitates the dissolution process by thinning the electric double layer was reviewed,the synergistic effect of hydrostatic pressure and tensile stress on the stress corrosion cracking was discussed,and the modified coating with chemical bonding interface to prolong the service life in this environment was introduced.

Magnetic flux ropes are characterized by coherently twisted magnetic field lines,which are ubiquitous in magnetized plasmas.As the core structure of various eruptive phenomena in the solar atmosphere,flux ropes hold the key to understanding the physical mechanisms of solar eruptions,which impact the heliosphere and planetary atmospheres.The strongest disturbances in the Earth’s space environments are often associated with large-scale flux ropes from the Sun colliding with the Earth’s magnetosphere,leading to adverse,sometimes catastrophic,space-weather effects.However,it remains elusive as to how a flux rope forms and evolves toward eruption,and how it is structured and embedded in the ambient field.The present paper addresses these important questions by reviewing current understandings of coronal flux ropes from an observer’s perspective,with an emphasis on their structures and nascent evolution toward solar eruptions,as achieved by combining observations of both remote sensing and in-situ detection with modeling and simulation.This paper highlights an initiation mechanism for coronal mass ejections(CMEs)in which plasmoids in current sheets coalesce into a’seed’flux rope whose subsequent evolution into a CME is consistent with the standard model,thereby bridging the gap between microscale and macroscale dynamics.

Chiral coating-mediated interactions of bacteria with diverse biointerfaces

Bacteria,as living agents,have been widely used for microbial therapy due to their inherent ability to colonize different in vivo microenvironments,particularly in the gut and tumor.The interaction with diverse biointerfaces plays a critical role in bacterial colonization,and thereby determine the ultimate efficacy of microbial therapy.Although surface modification of bacteria with exogenous functional motifs can vary their interaction with surroundings,the effects of surface chirality of modified bacteria on mucous adhesion,tumor cell binding,and bacterial competition remain unknown.Here,we describe surface chirality-dependent selective interactions of bacteria to mucins,tumor cells,and pathogens.By coating bacteria with cationic polyethyleneimine modified with different chiral amino acids through electrostatic interaction,we find that bacteria coated with a D-chiral surface structure exhibit greatly increased adhesion to both mucins and tumor cells compared with those of L-and DL-structures.In addition,by adjusting the chirality of the coating,wrapped probiotic bacteria can selectively resist pathogenic bacteria,showing great potential to enhance colonization and positively modulate the gut and tumor microbiota.This work discloses surface chirality-dependent interaction of bacteria with different biointerfaces,showing a potential to tune the colonization and therapeutic effect of living bacterial agents for disease treatment.

We show that if a bounded linear operator can be approximated by a net(or sequence)of uniformly bounded finite rank Lipschitz mappings pointwisely,then it can be approximated by a net(or sequence)of uniformly bounded finite rank linear operators under the strong operator topology.As an application,we deduce that a Banach space has an(unconditional)Lipschitz frame if and only if it has an(unconditional)Schauder frame.Another immediate consequence of our result recovers the famous Godefroy-Kalton theorem(Godefroy and Kalton(2003))which says that the Lipschitz bounded approximation property and the bounded approximation property are equivalent for every Banach space.

Particulate matter(PM)is the main contributor to air pollution,and filtration has been reported to be promising for PM capturing.Considering the complexity of polluted air(volatile organic compounds(VOCs)and ozone are likely concomitant with PM particles)and in view of the versatility of MnO_(2) for the degradation of VOCs and ozone,the feasibility of MnO_(2) materials as PM filteringmediawas investigated in this study,and the effect of crystal structure on PM filtration was clarified.Compared with the layeredδ-MnO_(2),the MnO_(2) with tunnel structure(including 1×2-,2×2-and 3×3-MnO_(2))exhibited greatly enhanced PM removal efficiencies,and particularly,the 3×3-MnO_(2) possessed not only significant activity for adsorbing PM particles but also high utilization efficiency of the active surface.Physicochemical properties of the adsorbents were studied by XRD,ATR,isothermal N_(2) adsorption,SEM and(HR)TEM.The correlation between pore characteristics and particle elimination activity demonstrates that the most developed mesoporous structure of the 3×3-MnO_(2) sample played an important role in strengthening the PM adsorption capability.Further comparison of the surface properties of the fresh and spent samples reveals that with respective to the occasion ofδ-MnO_(2),the structure of 3×3-MnO_(2) was robust enough to resist collapse after PM capturing and the great accommodation of the inorganic and organic PM substances in the voluminous pores induced strong affinity between PM particles and 3×3-MnO_(2).Thereby,a higher particle filtration ability was retained.

Our previous study has revealed that procyanidin A_(1)(A_(1))and its simulated digestive product(D-A,)can alleviate acrylamide(ACR)-induced intestine cell damage.However,the underlying mechanism remains unknown.In this study,we elucidated the molecular mechanism for and D-A_(1) to alleviate ACR-stimulated IPEC-J2 cell damage.ACR slightly activated nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2(Nrf2)signaling and its target genes,but this activation could not reduce intestine cell damage.A_(1) and D-A_(1) could alleviate ACR-induced cell damage,but the effect was abrogated in cells transiently transfected with Nrf2 small interfering RNA(siRNA).Further investigation confirmed that A_(1) and D-A_(1) interacted with Ketch-like ECH-associated protein 1(Keapl),which boosted the stabilization of Nrf2,subsequently promoted the translocation of Nrf2 into the nucleus,and further increased the expression of antioxidant proteins,thereby inhibiting glutathione(GSH)consumption,maintaining redox balance and eventually alleviating ACR-induced cell damage.Importantly,there was no difference between A_(1) and D-A_(1) treated groups,indicating that A_(1) can tolerate gastrointestinal digestion and may be a potential compound to limit the toxicity of ACR.
