Background:Knee osteoarthritis(KOA)characterized by degeneration of knee cartilage and subsequent bone hyperplasia is a prevalent joint condition primarily affecting aging adults.The pathophysiology of KOA remains poorly understood,as it involves complex mechanisms that result in the same outcome.Consequently,researchers are interested in studying KOA and require appropriate animal models for basic research.Chinese herbal compounds,which consist of multiple herbs with diverse pharmacological properties,possess characteristics such as multicomponent,multipathway,and multitarget effects.The potential benefits in the treatment of KOA continue to attract attention.Purpose:This study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the advantages,limitations,and specific considerations in selecting different species and methods for KOA animal models.This will help researchers make informed decisions when choosing an animal model.Methods:Online academic databases(e.g.,PubMed,Google Scholar,Web of Science,and CNKI)were searched using the search terms“knee osteoarthritis,”“animal models,”“traditional Chinese medicine,”and their combinations,primarily including KOA studies published from 2010 to 2023.Results:Based on literature retrieval,this review provides a comprehensive overview of the methods of establishing KOA animal models;introduces the current status of advantages and disadvantages of various animal models,including mice,rats,rabbits,dogs,and sheep/goats;and presents the current status of methods used to establish KOA animal models.Conclusion:This study provides a review of the animal models used in recent KOA research,discusses the common modeling methods,and emphasizes the role of traditional Chinese medicine compounds in the treatment of KOA.

Objective YAP1 plays a dual role as an oncogene and tumor suppressor gene in several tumors;differentiating between these roles may depend on the YAP1 phosphorylation pattern.The specific function of YAP1 in B cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia(B-ALL),however,is currently unclear.Thus,in the present study,the role of YAP1 in B-ALL was investigated using relevant cell lines and patient datasets.Methods The effects of shRNA-mediated knockdown on YAP1 and LATS1 levels in the NALM6 and MOLT-4 cell lines were examined using Western blotting,quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction,flow cytometry,immunostaining,and nude mouse subcutaneous tumorigenesis experiments.Gene expression levels of Hippo pathway-related molecules before and after verteporfin(VP)treatment were compared using RNA-Seq to identify significant Hippo pathway-related genes in NALM6 cells.Results Patients with ALL showing high YAP1 expression and low YAP1-Ser127 phosphorylation levels had worse prognoses than those with low YAP1 protein expression and high YAP1-Ser127 phosphorylation levels.YAP1-Ser127 phosphorylation levels were lower in NALM6 cells than in MOLT-4 and control cells;YAP1 was distributed in the nuclei in NALM6 cells.Knockdown of YAP1 inhibited MOLT-4 and NALM6 cell proliferation and arrested the NALM6 cell cycle in the G0/G1 phase.Before and after VP treatment,the expression of the upstream gene LATS1 was upregulated;its overexpression promoted YAP1-Ser127 phosphorylation.Further,YAP1 was distributed in the plasma.Conclusion LATS1 may downregulate YAP1-Ser127 phosphorylation and maintain B-ALL cell function;thus,VP,which targets this axis,may serve as a new therapeutic method for improving the outcomes for B-ALL patients.

Surgically treating a rare and asymptomatic intraductal papillary neoplasm of the bile duct:A case report

BACKGROUND Intraductal papillary neoplasms of the bile duct(IPNBs)are rare and characterized by papillary growth within the bile duct lumen.IPNB is similar to obstructive biliary pathology.In this report,we present an unexpected case of asymptomatic IPNB and consolidate our findings with the relevant literature to augment our understanding of this condition.Integrating relevant literature contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of the disease.CASE SUMMARY A 66-year-old Chinese male patient was admitted to our hospital for surgical intervention after gallstones were discovered during a routine physical examination.Preoperative imaging revealed a lesion on the left side of the liver,which raised the suspicion of IPNB.A laparoscopic left hemihepatectomy was performed,and subsequent histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of IPNB.At the 3-mo postoperative follow-up,the patient reported good recovery and no metastasis.IPNB can manifest both latently and asymptomatically.Radical surgical resection is the most effective treatment for IPNB.CONCLUSION Hepatic and biliary masses,should be considered to diagnose IPNB.Prompt surgery and vigilant follow-up are crucial in determining prognosis.

BackgroundIrritable bowel syndrome(IBS)is a functional bowel disease characterized by abdominal pain or discomfort associated with altered bowel habits.Several clinical studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of acupuncture and moxibustion for IBS.Many systematic reviews of acupuncture and moxibustion for IBS have been published in recent years,but their results are not entirely consistent.ObjectiveTo evaluate the methodological,reporting,and evidence quality of systematic reviews of acupuncture and moxibustion for IBS.Search strategySystematic reviews of acupuncture and moxibustion for IBS published before February 20,2023 were searched in eight databases:PubMed,Embase,Cochrane Library,Web of Science,China National Knowledge Infrastructure,Wanfang Data,VIP Database for Chinese Technical Periodicals,and China Biology Medicine.The keywords used for literature search were acupuncture,moxibustion,systematic review,meta-analysis,and irritable bowel syndrome.Inclusion criteriaSystematic reviews and meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials of acupuncture and moxibustion for IBS were included.Data extraction and analysisRelevant information was independently extracted by two investigators.The A MeaSurement Tool to Assess systematic Reviews 2(AMSTAR 2),Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses(PRISMA 2020),and Grading of Recommendations Assessment,Development and Evaluation(GRADE)were used to evaluate the methodological quality,reporting quality and evidence quality,respectively.ResultsA total of 342 studies were retrieved and 15 systematic reviews were included.The results of AMSTAR 2 showed low methodological quality in 2 studies and very low methodological quality in the remaining 13 studies,with main issues being failure to register a protocol,incomplete search strategy,not providing a list of excluded studies,incomplete consideration of the risk of bias in the included studies,and a failure to assess the publication bias.The results of PRISMA 2020 showed seriously deficient reportin

Bilayer Compounded Polytetrafluoroethylene Membrane for Enhanced Oil-Water Emulsion Separation

In order to achieve efficient and durable oil-water emulsion separation,the membranes possessing high separation efficiency and mechanical strength attract extensive attention and are in great demand.In present study,a kind of polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE)-based bilayer membrane was fabricated by electrospinning fibrous PTFE(fPTFE)on an expanded PTFE(ePTFE)substrate.The morphological observation revealed that the fibrous structure of the fPTFE layer could be tailored by controlling the formulation of spinning solution.The addition of appropriate polyoxyethylene(PEO)would make the fibers in the fPTFE layer finer and more uniform.As a result,the compounded membrane exhibited a small pore size of approximately 1.25µm and a substantial porosity nearing 80%.This led to super-hydrophobicity,characterized by a high water contact angle(WCA)of 149.8°,and facilitated rapid oil permeation.The water-in-oil emulsion separation experiment further confirmed that the compounded membrane not only had a high separation efficiency closing 100%,but such an outstanding separation capacity could be largely retained,either through multiple cycles of use or through strong acid(pH=1),strong alkali(pH=12),or high-temperature(100°C)treatment.Additionally,the mechanical behavior of the bilayer membrane was basically contributed by that of each layer in terms of their volume ratio.More significantly,the poor creep resistance of fPTFE layer was suppressed by compounding with ePTFE substrate.Hence,this study has laid the groundwork for a novel approach to create PTFE-based compounded membranes with exceptional overall characteristics,showing promise for applications in the realm of emulsion separation.

The rapidly increasing production of lithium-ion batteries(LIBs)and their limited service time increases the number of spent LIBs,eventually causing serious environmental issues and resource wastage.From the perspectives of clean production and the development of the LIB industry,the effective recovery and recycling of spent LIBs require urgent solutions.This study provides an overview of the current hydrometallurgical processes employed in the recycling of spent cathode materials,focusing on the leaching of valuable metals and their postprocessing.In particular,this research reviews the various leaching systems(inorganic acid,organic acid,and ammonia)and the separation of valuable metals,and then,recommendations for subsequent study are offered in an attempt to contribute to the development of highly efficient methods for recycling spent cathode materials.In addition,a range of existing technologies,such as solvent extraction,chemical precipitation,electrochemical deposition,and regeneration,for the postprocessing of leaching solutions are summarized.Finally,the promising technologies,existing challenges and suggestions with respect to the development of effective and environmentally friendly recycling methods for handling spent cathode materials are identified.

Constipation is common in the diseases of the digestive system in clinics.With the change in diet structure and the increase in life pressure,the prevalence rate increases year by year.In traditional Chinese medicine(TCM),the location of the disease of constipation is in the large intestine,which is related to the dysfunction of lung,spleen,liver,kidney and other viscera.Its pathogenesis is conductive dysfunction of large intestine.Based on the theory,Shouhui Tongbian Capsule(SHTB)is composed of eight traditional Chinese medicines,including Polygoni multiflori Radix(Heshouwu in Chinese),Aloe(Luhui in Chinese),Cassiae Semen(Juemingzi in Chinese),Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma(Renshen in Chinese),Lycii Fructus(Gouqizi in Chinese),Asini Corii Colla(Ejiao in Chinese),Aurantii Fructus Immaturus(Zhishi in Chinese),and Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma(Baizhu in Chinese),which could help to release excessive turbid,and nourishing yin and supplementing qi in the treatment.This study has been carried out to review the latest advances of SHTB in the treatment of constipation.The results showed that significant effect of SHTB was found in the treatment of constipation,such as functional constipation,and constipation associated with tumor chemotherapy,colitis,type 2 diabetes and chronic cardiac failure.Besides,obvious adverse reactions were not observed.SHTB could effectively treat five types of constipation,provide direction for the future exploration of SHTB in the treatment of other types of constipation。

Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio associated with renal function in type 2 diabetic patients

BACKGROUND Type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM)is a leading risk factor for the development and progression of chronic kidney disease(CKD).However,an accurate and con-venient marker for early detection and appropriate management of CKD in in-dividuals with T2DM is limited.Recent studies have demonstrated a strong correlation between the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio(NLR)and CKD.None-theless,the predictive value of NLR for renal damage in type 2 diabetic patients remains understudied.This study included 1040 adults aged 65 or older with T2DM from Shanghai's Community Health Service Center.The total number of neutrophils and lym-phocytes was detected,and NLR levels were calculated.CKD was defined as an estimated glomerular filtration rate≤60 mL/min/1.73 m².Participants were di-vided into four groups based on NLR levels.The clinical data and biochemical characteristics were compared among groups.A multivariate logistic regression model was used to analyze the association between NLR levels and CKD.RESULTS Significant differences were found in terms of sex,serum creatinine,blood urea nitrogen,total cholesterol,and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol among patients with T2DM in different NLR groups(P<0.0007).T2DM patients in the highest NLR quartile had a higher prevalence of CKD(P for trend=0.0011).Multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that a high NLR was an independent risk factor for CKD in T2DM patients even after adjustment for important clinical and pathological parameters(P=0.0001,odds ratio=1.41,95%confidence intervals:1.18-1.68).CONCLUSION An elevated NLR in patients with T2DM is associated with higher prevalence of CKD,suggesting that it could be a marker for the detection and evaluation of diabetic kidney disease.

DNA is highly vulnerable to spontaneous and environmental timely damage in living cells.DNA damage may cause genetic instability and increase cancer risk if the damages are not repaired timely and efficiently.Human cells possess several DNA damage response(DDR)mechanisms to protect the integrity of their genome.Clarification of the mechanisms under-lying the DNA damage response following lethal damage will facilitate the identification of therapeutic targets for cancers.Histone post-translational modifications(PTMs)have been indicated to play different roles in the repair of DNA damage.In this context,histone PTMs regulate recruitment of downstream effectors,and facilitate appropriate repair response.This review outlines the current understanding of different histone PTMs in response to DNA dam-age repair,besides,enumerates the role of new type PTMs such as histone succinylation and crotonylation in regulating DNA damage repair processes.

Covalent triazine frameworks modified by ultrafine Pt nanoparticles for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production

Pt nanoparticles(PtNPs)as active species have always been considered as one of the best semiconductor materials for photocatalytic hydrogen production.In this study,a Schottky heterojunction has been successfully constructed by evenly loading ultrafine PtNPs onto a triazine-based covalent organic frameworks(COFs).This strategy maintained the high activity of these ultra-small PtNPs while maximizing the utilization of the Pt active sites.The fabricated PtNPs@covalent triazine-based framework-1(CTF-1)composite accomplished a significantly high rate of hydrogen evolution(20.0 mmol·g^(−1)·h^(−1),apparent quantum efficiency(AQE)=7.6%,atλ=450 nm)with 0.40 wt.%Pt loading,giving rise to a 44-fold-increase in the efficiency of the photocatalytic hydrogen production compared to the pristine CTF-1.Theoretical calculations revealed that the strong electron transfer(Q(Pt)=−0.726 qe,in the analysis of Bader charge,Q(Pt)is the charge quantity transferred from Pt cluster to CTF-1,and qe is the unit of charge transfer quantity)between PtNPs and CTF-1 triggers a strong interaction,which makes PtNPs being firmly attached to the structure of CTF-1,thereby enabling high stability and excellent hydrogen production efficiency.Importantly,the hydrogen binding free energy(ΔGH*)of PtNPs@CTF-1 is much lower than that of the unmodified CTF-1,leading to a much lower intermediate state and hence a significant improvement in photocatalytic performance.The overall findings of this work provide a new platform to incorporate metallic NPs into COFs for the design and fabrication of highly efficient photocatalysts.
