Spinal cord injury(SCI)is a devastating and disabling medical condition generally caused by a traumatic event(primary injury).This initial trauma is accompanied by a set of biological mechanisms directed to ameliorate neural damage but also exacerbate initial damage(secondary injury).The alterations that occur in the spinal cord have not only local but also systemic consequences and virtually all organs and tissues of the body incur important changes after SCI,explaining the progression and detrimental consequences related to this ***(PNIE)is a growing area of research aiming to integrate and explore the interactions among the different systems that compose the human organism,considering the mind and the body as a *** initial traumatic event and the consequent neurological disruption trigger immune,endocrine,and multisystem dysfunction,which in turn affect the patient's psyche and *** the present review,we will explore the most important local and systemic consequences of SCI from a PNIE perspective,defining the changes occurring in each system and how all these mechanisms are ***,potential clinical approaches derived from this knowledge will also be collectively presented with the aim to develop integrative therapies to maximize the clinical management of these patients.

Activity optimization method in SPECT:A comparison with ROC analysis

A discriminant method for optimizing activity in nuclear medicine studies is validated by comparison with ROC （received operating characteristic）-curves. The method is tested in 21 single photon emission computerized tomography （SPECT）, performed with a cardiac phantom. Three different lesions （Lb L2 and L3） were placed in the myocardium-wall by pairs fbr each SPECT. Three activities （84, 37 or 18.5 MBq） of 99mTc were used as background. Linear discriminant analysis was used to select the parameters that characterize image quality among the measured variables in the images [（Background-to-Lesion （B/Li） and Signal-to-Noise （S/N） ratios）]. Two clusters with different image quality （P=0.021 ） were obtained. The ratios B/Lj, B/L2 and B/L3 are the parameters used to construct the function with 100% of cases correctly classified into the clusters. The value of 37 MBq was the lowest tested activity for which good results for the B/Li ratios were obtained. The result coincides with the applied ROC-analysis （r=0.89）.

YKL40 expression in Cd14^+ liver cells in acute and chronic injury

AIM:To demonstrate that Cd14 + cells are an important source of the growth factor YKL40 in acute and chronic liver ***:Rats were inoculated with one dose of CCl4 to induce acute *** biopsies were obtained at 0,6,12,24,48 and 72 *** chronic damage,CCl4 was administered three days per week for 6 or 8 *** samples were collected,and cellular populations were isolated by liver digestion and purified by cell ***40 mRNA and protein expression were evaluated by realtime polymerase chain reaction and western ***:Acute liver damage induced a rapid increase of YKL40 mRNA beginning at 12 *** peaked at 24 h,with a 26fold increase over basal *** 72 h however,YKL40 expression levels had nearly returned to control *** the other hand,chronic damage induced a sustained increase in YKL40 expression,with 7and 9fold higher levels at 6 and 8 wk,*** pattern of YKL40 expression in different subpopulations showed that Cd14+cells,which include Kupffer cells,are a source of YKL40 after acute damage at 72 h[0.09 relative expression units(REU)]as well as after chronic injury at 6 wk(0.11 REU).Hepatocytes,in turn,accounted for 0.06 and 0.01 REU after 72 h(acute)or 6 wk(chronic),*** rest of the Cd14cells(including T lymphocytes,B lymphocytes,natural killer and natural killer T cells) yielded 0.07 and 0.15 REU at 72 h and 6 wk,***40 protein expression in liver was detected at 72 h as well as 6 and 8 wk,with the highest expression relative to controls(11fold;P≤0.05)seen at 6 *** were stimulated by *** demonstrate that under these conditions,these cells showed maximum expression of YKL40 at 12 h,with Pd with ***:Hepatic Cd14 + cells are an YKL40 mRNA and protein source in acute and chronic liver injury,with expression patterns similar to growth factors implicated in inflammationfibrogenesis.

Objective:To evaluate 11 Cuban native Bacillus(B.)thuringiensis isolates in order to select one with the best larvicidal activity against Aedes(Ae.)aegypti and low ***:The cry and cyt genes of the isolates(A21,A51,L95,L910,M29,R84,R85,R87,R89,U81 and X48)were amplified by *** influence of organic matter and NaCl on the larvicidal activity was tested by *** was assayed on peritoneal macrophages of BALB/c ***:The cyt1(Aa,Ab,Ba),cyt2,cry4aA,cry4Ba,cry11(Aa,Ba,Bb)and cry10 genes were identified in all native Cuban *** larvicidal activity(LC_(90))of seven isolates was affected by the presence of organic matter in the water,while A21,A51,L910,R84,U81 and X48 had better LC_(50),LC_(90),LC_(95) than the 266/29-Ⅶ-98 control *** LC_(50) of two isolates was affected by the presence of NaCl and A21,A51,R85 isolate had better larvicidal activity than the 266/29-Ⅶ-98 control *** terms of toxicity against macrophages,the extracts of nine isolates were less cytotoxic than the control ***:Native isolate A21 had the main virulence factors against *** larvae,displayed a good larvicidal activity in presence of different factors related with *** breeding sites,and had low citotoxicity against *** results can contribute to the improvement of existing biological control strategies and the development of new biolarvicides.

At present,Alzheimer’s disease(Ad)and type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2dM)are two highly prevalent disorders worldwide,especially among elderly individuals.T2dM appears to be associated with cognitive dysfunction,with a higher risk of developing neurocognitive disorders,including *** diseases have been observed to share various pathophysiological mechanisms,including alterations in insulin signaling,defects in glucose transporters(GLUTs),and mitochondrial dysfunctions in the ***,the aim of this review is to summarize the current knowledge regarding the molecular mechanisms implicated in the association of these pathologies as well as recent therapeutic *** this context,the hyperphosphorylation of tau and the formation of neurofibrillary tangles have been associated with the dysfunction of the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase and mitogen-activated protein kinase pathways in the nervous tissues as well as the decrease in the expression of GLUT-1 and GLUT-3 in the different areas of the brain,increase in reactive oxygen species,and production of mitochondrial alterations that occur in *** findings have contributed to the implementation of overlapping pharmacological interventions based on the use of insulin and antidiabetic drugs,or,more recently,azeliragon,amylin,among others,which have shown possible beneficial effects in diabetic patients diagnosed with Ad.

Effectiveness of Selected Microbial Strains on the Growth of Sweet Sorghum

Microbial inoculants are of great importance in agro-ecology and plants. However, the symbiotic effectiveness of strains may vary between species or within the same species. Aim of the study was to select experimental microbial strains of national origin, to know its impact on growth of sweet sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) in greenhouse and sterile soil. Five strains of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and eight rhizobacteria (two of them mutagenized) were compared with non-inoculated plants as control. Variables measured were index of chlorophyll SPAd, plant height, stem diameter (from the middle section), fresh biomass from stem, leaf, panicle, radical, and stem sugars content (°Brix) of every two internodes. The results showed that in the majority of cases, microbial strains exceeded the values of variables compared with control plants. The highest values of chlorophyll (41.8 SPAd), stem diameter (13.5 mm) and total fresh biomass (144.3 g), were recorded with rhizobacterias BS410 (Herbaspirillum sp.), B2709 (Pseudomonas sp.) and B4M4 (azospirillum sp.), respectively.

Lupinus microcarpus Growing in Arsenic—Agricultural Soils from Chile: Toxic Effects and It Potential Use as Phytoremediator Plant

Arsenic (As) is the most important contaminant of the environment in northern Chile. The purpose of the present work is to study As-toxicity symptoms on Lupino microcarpus (lupine), an annual legume plant that constitutes part of the desert community of the pre-Andean area of the Antofagasta Region, Chile. This plant species is cultivated in As-agricultural soil collected from Chiu Chiu (northern Chile) which is classified as arid soils. Control soil (0 - 20 cm depth) is collected from an area located in the central zone of Chile, which is classified as molli soil. The main physic-chemical characteristics of As-soil and the control soil are determined. Eighteen plastic pots of 1.6 L (fifteen for experimental and three for control) are filled with As-soil and control soil treatments. Two plants are cultivated in each pot and then separated leaves and roots for As-analysis. Visual As-toxicity symptoms such as foliar chlorosis, necrosis of the leaf tips and margins, leaf wilting and stunted are determined. Total As concentrations in soils where lupine is cultivated, reach levels between 5.3 - 14.2 mg·kg-1 d.w. (control soil As-level: 3.1 mg·kg-1). Roots show higher As-concentration than leaves, both experimental plants as control plants (2.28 - 9.1 mg·kg-1 d.w., and 0.76 mg·kg-1 d.w., respectively) and low values of transport index (TI) (0.16 - 0.34). All of visual As-toxicity symptoms determined is showed by lupin cultivated in As-agricultural soils. Neither control lupin plant suffers any toxicity symptoms. The results indicate that lupine plants do not resist contamination and accumulated higher levels of As in roots. Lupine can be used in the phytostabilisation of As immobilizing it by microbial activity in agricultural soil.

Mapping aboveground biomass by integrating geospatial and forest inventory data through a k-nearest neighbor strategy in North Central Mexico

As climate change negotiations progress,monitoring biomass and carbon stocks is becoming an important part of the current forest ***,national governments are interested in developing forest-monitoring strategies using geospatial *** statistical methods for mapping biomass,there is a nonparametric approach called k-nearest neighbor(kNN).We compared four variations of distance metrics of the kNN for the spatially-explicit estimation of aboveground biomass in a portion of the Mexican north border of the intertropical *** derived,climatic,and topographic predictor variables were combined with the Mexican National Forest Inventory(NFI)data to accomplish the *** of distance metrics applied into the kNN algorithm was evaluated using a cross validation leave-one-out *** results indicate that the Most Similar Neighbor(MSN)approach maximizes the correlation between predictor and response variables(r=0.9).Our results are in agreement with those reported in the *** findings confirm the predictive potential of the MSN approach for mapping forest variables at pixel level under the policy of Reducing Emission from deforestation and Forest degradation(REdd+).

Root colonization by mycorrhizal INIFAP<sup>MR</sup>in barley seed treated with fungicide

The effect of barley seed treated with chlorothalonil fungicide on mycorrhizal root colonization was evaluated. The treatments were: 1) Seed with Mycorrhizal INIFAP?, one, two and three doses, and uninoculated seed;2) Seed with and without fungicide. Monthly seed plantings were performed with different storage time, looking forward to assessing the colonization degree of the roots. As revealed by the results, the seed treated with chlorothalonil did not lower the root colonization by Mycorrhizal INIFAP?;the chlorothalonil treatment had a 32.63% average root colonization, whereas without chlorothalonil, it was 36.46%. When the seed was treated with root colonization by Mycorrhizal INIFAP?, this was lower in the treatment with one dose;no significant difference was revealed by the treatments with either double or triple doses.?The colonization percentage was progressively decreased by seed storage. The root colonization by Mycorrhizal INIFAP?, throughout the inoculated seed storage time, remained constant and unchanged for the first six months, but then decreased in 50% within a 10-month period for both treated and not treated fungicide seed.

The endemic silverside fish C. humboldtianum is of great ichtyologycal, economical and cultural relevance in central Mexico and it has been suggested that it is among a group of other “peces blancos”, the most ancestral species. Here we characterized a set of 26 microsatellite loci from the species in order to further assess population and phylogeographic issues that aid in evaluating their highly impacted populations. From 58 primer pairs tested on specimens from Villa Victoria dam (Rio Balsas Basin), 26 loci positively amplified on the species and cross-primed on specimens of the closely related and threatened Poblana alchichica, C. promelas and C. riojai. Loci resolved medium and high genetic variation (mean NA = 14.3, Sd = 9.38;mean HO & HE = 0.47, Sd = 0.32 and 0.58, Sd = 0.32, respectively) and it is expected that these polymorphic loci are also useful in studing threatened atherinopsid species.
