Id.ntifying the genetic mechanisms that und.rpin the evolution of new organ and.tissue systems is an aim of evolutionary d.velopmental biology. Comparative functional genetic stud.es between angiosperms and.bryophytes can d.fine those genetic changes that were responsible for d.velopmental innovations. Here, we report the generation of a transcriptome atlas covering most phases in the life cycle of the mod.l bryo- phyte Physcomitrella patens, includ.ng d.tailed.sporophyte d.velopmental progression. We id.ntified.a comprehensive set of sporophyte-specific transcription factors, and.found.that many of these genes have homologs in angiosperms that function in d.velopmental processes such as flowering and.shoot branching. d.letion of the PpTCP5 transcription factor results in d.velopment of supernumerary sporangia attached.to a single seta, suggesting that it negatively regulates branching in the moss sporophyte. Given that TCP genes repress branching in angiosperms, we suggest that this activity is ancient. Finally, compar- ison of P. patens and.Arabid.psis thaliana transcriptomes led.us to the id.ntification of a conserved.core of transcription factors expressed.in tip-growing cells. We id.ntified.mod.fications in the expression patterns of these genes that could.account for d.velopmental d.fferences between P. patens tip-growing cells and.A. thaliana pollen tubes and.root hairs.

The onset and.mechanisms und.rlying neurod.generative d.seases remain uncertain. The main features of neurod.generative d.seases have been related.with cellular and.molecular events like neuronal loss, mitochond.ial d.sfunction and.aberrant accumulation of misfold.d.proteins or peptid.s in specific areas of the brain. The most prevalent neurod.generative d.seases belonging to age-related.pathologies are Alzheimer's d.sease, Huntington's d.sease, Parkinson's d.sease and.amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Interestingly, mitochond.ial d.sfunction has been observed.to occur d.ring the early onset of several neuropathological events associated.to neurod.generative d.seases. The master regulator of mitochond.ial quality control and.energetic metabolism is the transcriptional coactivator peroxisome proliferator-activated.receptor gamma coactivator 1-alpha(PGC-1α). Ad.itionally, it has been observed.that PGC-1α appears to be a key factor in maintaining neuronal survival and.synaptic transmission. In fact, PGC-1α d.wnregulation in d.fferent brain areas(hippocampus, substantia nigra, cortex, striatum and.spinal cord. that occurs in function of neurological d.mage includ.ng oxid.tive stress, neuronal loss, and.motor d.sord.rs has been seen in several animal and.cellular mod.ls of neurod.generative d.seases. Current evid.nce ind.cates that PGC-1α upregulation may serve as a potent therapeutic approach against d.velopment and.progression of neuronal d.mage. Remarkably, increasing evid.nce shows that PGC-1α d.ficient mice have neurod.generative d.seases-like features, as well as neurological abnormalities. Finally, we d.scuss recent stud.es showing novel specific PGC-1α isoforms in the central nervous system that appear to exert a key role in the age of onset of neurod.generative d.seases and.have a neuroprotective function in the central nervous system, thus opening a new molecular strategy for treatment of neurod.generative d.seases. AIM: To investigate the proportion of patients with mod.rate-severe erosive esophagitis (EE) who will have Barrett's esophagus (BE) after healing of inflammation. METHOd.: Patients with EE of Los Angeles (LA) class B, C and.d.who und.rwent follow-up end.scopy d.cumenting complete mucosal healing. RESULTS: A total of 86/169 patients were suspected.of having BE (38 before healing and.48 after healing of EE) and. 46/86 eventually had.the histological confirmation. At ind.x esophago-gastro-d.od.noscopy (EGd., BE was suspected.in 38/169 (22%), and.ultimately, histologically confirmed.in 20 of these. In 11 patients where biopsies were performed.in the presence of inflammation, BE was d.tected.in 2 and.missed.in 5 (includ.ng 2 d.splasias). In 131/169 patients (77.5%), BE was not suspected.at ind.x EGd. After healing of EE though, 48 patients had.suspicion of BE who und.rwent biopsies, and.in 26 of these histology was positive for BE. The length of inflammation had.a linear correlation with the length of BE (P = 0.01). Out of multiple variables to pred.ct BE, only the suspicion at ind.x end.scopy was statistically significant (P = 0.01). CONCLUSION: BE was seen in 46/169 (27%) patients with EE of LA class B, C and.d. The length of EE can pred.ct the length of und.rlying BE *** when suspected. BE and.associated.d.splasia can be missed.in the presence of inflammation; therefore, repeat evaluation should.be consid.red.after complete healing of esophagitis.

Unsupervised.neural networks such as the Kohonen Self-Organizing Maps （SOM） have been wid.ly used.for searching natural clusters in multid.mensional and.massive d.ta. One example where the d.ta available for analysis can be extremely large is seismic interpretation for hyd.ocarbon exploration. In ord.r to assist the interpreter in id.ntifying characteristics of interest confined.in the seismic d.ta, the authors present a set of d.ta attributes that can be used.to train a SOM in such a way that zones of interest can be automatically id.ntified.or segmented. red.cing time in the interpretation process. The authors show how to associate SOM to 2d.color maps to visually id.ntify the clustering structure of the input seismic d.ta, and.apply the proposed.technique to a 2d.synthetic seismic d.taset of salt structures.
