Evolution of forest cover in Portugal: A review of the 12th–20th centuries

Portugal＇s forests in the 12th century were dominated by the Fagaceae represented by Quercus and Castanea, and several pine species From the 12th century onwards, forests underwent changes in their management starting with protection and ultimately leading to intense exploitation. The massive naval construction during the maritime expansion （mainly in the 15th-16th centuries） involved felling of approximately 5 million trees mainly Quercus suber, Pinus pinea and other Quercus species. Cumulative fuel-wood consumption of 959 Mm3 during 1300-1854 was attributed to demographic expansion while the deforestation rate during 1636-1854 accounted for a minimum of 72.6% and a maximum of 96% of total forest cover. The volume of timber used in railway sleepers from 1856 onwards might have reached 0.5 Mm3. The last quarter of the 20th century increased the forest cover of Portugal through the World Bank program of Eucalyptus globulus reforestation.

Light and heavy clusters are calculated for warm stellar matter in the framework of relativistic mean-field models, in the single-nucleus approximation. The cluster abundances are determined from the minimization of the free energy. In-medium effects of light cluster properties are included by introducing an explicit binding energy shift analytically calculated in the Thomas–Fermi approximation, and the coupling constants are fixed by imposing that the virial limit at low density is recovered. The resulting light cluster abundances come out to be in reasonable agreement with constraints at higher density coming from heavy-ion collision data. Some comparisons with microscopic calculations are also shown.

Aging blow fly eggs can be critical to a forensic investigation,but there are currently no forensically useful timelines describing internal anatomical changes in embryological *** is partly due to the lack of an economical,rapid and technically simple histological technique to allow mass production of slides for research and *** present a histological method that uses a slightly modified standard laboratory processing run with 1 h fixation in 10% formalin,2 h softening in Molliflex and Haemotoxylin and Eosin (H&E) *** also present a summary of the internal anatomical changes that can be visualized using our technique in the developing eggs of Calliphora vicina robineau-Desvoidy (Diptera: Calliphoridae).We examined eggs from at least three different females grown at 15 ℃ and sampled at 6 h intervals,and eggs grown at 20 ℃ and sampled at 3 h *** aging trials demonstrated that it is possible to accurately age material grown at 20 ℃ to within 6 h (but attempts to further narrow this interval resulted in errors in one-third of cases).It was also possible to see sufficient anatomical detail to age eggs preserved for forensic casework 5,8,9,10 and 11 years ***,we determined that section quality was improved by 5 s fixation in hot water prior to preservation in ***,hot water fixation for longer than this increased the level of section artefact.

The current design philosophy for submarine hulls,in the preliminary design stage,generally considers as governing limit states material yielding along with various buckling *** is common belief that,beyond the design pressure,material yielding of the shell plating should occur first,eventually followed by local buckling,while global buckling currently retains the highest safety *** the other hand,in the aeronautical field,in some cases structural components are designed in such a way that local instability may occur within the design loads,being the phenomena inside the material elastic range and not leading to a significant drop in term of *** paper is aimed at investigating the structural response beyond a set of selected limit states,using nonlinear FE method adopting different initial imperfection models,to provide the designers with new information useful for calibrating safety *** was found that both local and global buckling can be considered as ultimate limit states,with a significant sensitivity towards initial imperfection,while material yielding and tripping buckling of frames show a residual structural *** conclusion,it was found that the occurrence of local buckling leads to similar sudden catastrophic consequences as global buckling,with the ultimate strength capacity highly affected by the initial imperfection shape and amplitude.

Goal based and limit state design is nowadays a well-established approach in many engineering *** construction rules started introducing such concepts since early ***,classification societies’rules do not provide hints on how to verify limit states and to determine the structural layout of submerged thin-walled stiffened cylinders,whose most prominent examples are ***,they generally offer guidance and prescriptive formulations to assess shell plating and stiffening *** marine structures are studied,designed and built up to carry payloads below the sea *** the concept-design stage,the maximum operating depth is the governing hull scantling *** dimensions are determined based on the analysis of operational *** study proposes a practical conceptdesign approach for conceptual submarine design,aimed at obtaining hull structures that maximize the payload capacity in terms of available internal volume by suitably adjusting structural layout and stiffening members’scantling,duly accounting for robustness and construction constraints as well as practical fabrication *** proposed scantling process highlights that there is no need of complex algorithms if sound engineering judgment is applied in setting down rationally the hull scantling problem.A systematic approach based on a computer-coded procedure developed on purpose was effectively implemented and satisfactorily applied in design practice.

Effect of Cu-ZnO-Al_2O_3 supported on H-ferrierite on hydrocarbons formation from CO hydrogenation

Methanol synthesis catalysts based on Cu, Zn and Al were prepared by three methods and subsequently mixed with H-ferrierite zeolite in an aqueous suspension to disperse the catalysts over the support. These materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption, transmission electron microscopy, temperature programmed reduction, NH3 and H2 temperature-programmed desorption, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. They were also applied to the CO hydrogenation reaction to produce dimethyl ether and hydrocarbons. The catalysts were prepared by coprecipitation under low and high supersaturation conditions and by a homogeneous precipitation method. The preparation technique was found to affect the precursor structural characteristics, such as purity and crystallinity, as well as the particle size distribution of the resulting catalyst. Low supersaturation conditions favored high dispersion of the Cu species, increasing the methanol synthesis catalyst＇s metallic surface area and resulting in a homogeneous particle size distribution. These effects in turn were found to modify the zeolite properties, promoting both a low micropore volume and blockage of the zeolite acid sites. The effect of the methanol synthesis catalyst on the reaction was verified by the correlation between the Cu surface area and the CO conversion rate.
