Large areas of forest plantations have been developed in China. It is important to evaluate the soil fauna in plantations and the conditions needed for their recovery in view of the large areas of plantations in China. Three Pinus tabulaeformis forests, a 26-year-old plantation （P26） and a 45-year-old plantation （P45）, exposed to clear-cutting before plantation, and an 80 260-year-old natural forest （n260）, were chosen to study the effects of different forest ages/types on Collembola community in the lifter and soil layers during 2008 and 2009. Soil conditions in P26 and P45 were significantly deteriorated when compared to n260. A higher value of soil bulk density and lower values of soil organic matter, soil n, litter depth, soil pH, and soil water content were observed in P26 and P45. Totally, the same genera of Collembola tended to occur in the forests of all ages studied; however, the Collembola community structure was significantly impacted by the differences in forest age. Both in the litter and soil layers, the density and generic richness of the Collembola were the highest in n260 and the lowest in P26. Some collembolan groups were sensitive to soil conditions in particular forest ages. n260 was associated with relatively high abundance of Plutomus collembolans and P45 with relatively high abundance of Pseudofolsomia collembolans. The canonical correspondence analysis showed that the community structure of Collembola was mainly affected by forest age in both litter and soil layer. The ordination analysis of non-metric multidimensional scaling also found that the Collembola community did not recover to the level of natural forests in 26-year regeneration after clear-cutting. Even in 45-year regeneration after clear-cutting, the Collembola community only showed a slight recovery to the level of natural forests. Our results clearly showed that both Collembola community and soil conditions did not recover in 26- and 45-year regeneration after clear-cutting in P.

Vitamin E supplementation has been reported to decrease the incidence of cystic ovarian disease (COD) and retained placenta (rP) in cattle however the mechanism of action is not known. In humans, vitamin E supplementation twofold the daily requirements decreases plasma plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) activity. As proteolysis may be involved in both COD and rP, vitamin E may be reducing these disorders in cattle through its effects on PAI-1. To evaluate the effects of vitamin E on plasma PAI-1 activity in cattle, six non-lactating beef cows (n = 3 per treatment) were injected with 0 (Control) or 2750 IU of vitamin E (Vitamin E) IM once every four days for 24 days (Day 0 = first day of treatment). Blood samples were collected every two days for 28 days starting on Day 0 and plasma PAI-1 and tissue-type plasminogen activator (tPA) concentrations and activities were determined. no differences (P > 0.05) were observed due to vitamin E supplementation in plasma PAI-1 and tPA concentrations and activities or concentrations and activities adjusted relative to the Day 0 value for each cow. Day of treatment was a significant effect in all tPA measurements. The ratio of adjusted PAI-1 to tPA concentrations did not differ (P > 0.05) due to vitamin E supplementation however the ratio of PAI-1 to tPA activity tended to be greater (P = 0.097) in Control compared to Vitamin E cows (1.0 ± 0.1 and 0.7 ± 0.1, respectively). These data suggest vitamin E supplementation may contribute to the reduced incidence of COD and rP in cattle by shifting the ratio of plasma PAI-1 to tPA activity to a state favoring proteolysis.

发展了一种对元数据依赖程度较小的气候序列均一化思路,在缺乏元数据的基础上,采取3种不同的方法,对中国东南部地区年平均最高、最低气温序列进行了均一性检验;并对其中不连续的气温序列进行了订正。对比表明,订正后序列较订正前更为合理。在检验过程中发现,对于最低气温检验可以明显得出比最高气温更多的不连续点。为了进一步认识这个问题,对此进行了进一步分析,认为最低温度对变化更为敏感主要是由于其物理特征最低温度一般出现在夜间,夜间大气较为稳定,因此一些变化(如仪器,迁站)可能引起明显的不连续现象,而最高气温往往出现在白天,因此大气混合比较充分,空间的均一性要明显强于最低温度。另外,热岛现象、台站密度等因素均是影响气温序列均一化的因素。

Impact of sustained virologic response on chronic kidney disease progression in hepatitis C

AIM To determine how sustained virological response at 12 wk(SVr12) with direct acting antivirals(DAAs) for the treatment of hepatitis C virus(HCV) infection affects chronic kidney disease(CKD) progression. METHODS A retrospective analysis was performed in patients aged ≥ 18 years treated for HCV with DAAs at the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System from 2014-2016. The treatment group was compared to patients with HCV from 2011-2013 who did not undergo HCV treatment, prior to the introduction of DAAs; the control group was matched to the study group in terms of age, gender, and ethnicity. Analysis of variance and co-variance was performed to compare means between SVr12 subgroups adjusting for *** Five hundred and twenty-three patients were evaluated. When comparing the rate of change in estimated glomerular filtration rate(e GFr) one-year after HCV treatment to one-year before treatment, patients who achieved SVr12 had a decline in GFr of 3.1 m L/min ± 0.75 m L/min per 1.73 m^2 compared to a decline in e GFr of 11.0 m L/min ± 2.81 m L/min per 1.73 m^2 in patients who did not achieve SVr12(P = 0.002). There were no significant clinical differences between patients who achieved SVr12 compared to those who did not in terms of cirrhosis, treatment course, treatment experience, CKD stage prior to treatment, diuretic use or other co-morbidities. The decline in e GFr in those with untreated HCV over 2 years was 2.8 m L/min ± 1.0 m L/min per 1.73 m^2, which was not significantly different from the e GFr decline noted in HCV-treated patients who achieved SVr12(P = 0.43).COnCLUSIOn Patients who achieve SVr12 have a lesser decline in renal function, but viral eradication in itself may not be associated improvement in renal disease progression.

Biochar(BC)-supported graphene-encapsulated zero-valent iron nanoparticle composites(BC-G@Fe0)are promising engineering nanocomposites that can be used to scavenge heavy metal from ***,the produc-tion of BC-G@Fe0 through carbothermal reduction using biomass as a carbon source remains challenging because of biomass pyrolysis ***,we examined two carbothermal reduction routes for preparing BC-G@Fe0 using bamboo as the carbon *** first route impregnated Fe ions(Fe^(2+)/^(3+))into unpyrolyzed bamboo parti-cles initially,followed by carbonization at 600-1000℃.This process produced BC-G@Fe0 dominated by iron carbide(Fe_(3)C),which led to low heavy metal removal efficiency(i.e.,Cu^(2+)capacity ofn the second route,bamboo particles were pyrolyzed(600℃)to biochar first,followed by impregnating this biochar with Fe ions,and then carbonized at 600-1000℃.This route produces zero-valent iron nanoparticles,which resulted in high heavy metal removal capacities(i.e.,0.30,1.58,and 1.91 mmol g^(−1)for Pb^(2+),Cu^(2+),and Ag+,respectively).The effects of car-bonization temperature(600-1000℃),iron source(i.e.,iron nitrates,iron sulfate,ferrous chloride,and ferric chloride),and iron loading(5-40%)on the morphology,structure,and heavy metal ion aqueous uptake performance of BC-G@Fe0 were also *** study revealed the formation mechanisms of BC-G@Fe0 through biomass carbother-mal reduction,which could guide the application-oriented design of multifunctional iron-BC composites for water remediation.

Information is limited on the effects of climate variability on cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L.) and winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) yields in the semiarid region of the southern US. Using the Decision Support System for Agrotechnology Transfer (DSSAT) crop model and weather data spanning 81 years, we assessed the impact of El niño-Southern Oscillation (EnSO) on the grain yields of these crops in the Llano Estacado region of the southern US as affected by cowpea and wheat planting dates and n application rate. Simulated results showed that the El niño phase of EnSO produced about 30% more yields of mono-cropped cowpea than those produced under the La niña phase, especially with the cowpeas planted in July. The cowpea yields under El niño were about 10% more than the 81-year average normal yield, whereas those under La niña were about 20% less. At the n rates of 0, 50, and 100 kg·ha−1, regardless of wheat planting dates, the El niño years produced, respectively, about 8%, 40%, and 60% higher wheat yields than those produced in the La niña years, and about 5%, 20%, and 27% more than the 81-year average normal yield. In the La niña years, the wheat yields at 0, 50, and 100 kg n ha−1 were, respectively, about 5%, 15%, and 20% less than the normal yield with similar n levels. The impact of EnSO on wheat yields under cowpea-wheat double-cropping systems was significant, especially for the wheat crops planted on October 15 (October 30) or later following the cowpea crops planted in June (July). At zero n, the mono-cropped wheat yields were not impacted by EnSO due to n limitation. However, the double-cropped wheat yields were impacted by EnSO even when no n fertilizer was applied due to high soil n status caused by n transfer from cowpea stover residues and roots. results indicated that management strategies need to be attentive to EnSO forecasts and adjust potential planting dates and n application rates with the EnSO phase to avert risks of crop fa
