Vestibular rehabilitation in cerebellar ataxia with neuropathy and vestibular areflexia syndrome(CANVAS)-A case report

Background and purpose:Cerebellar ataxia,neuropathy,and vestibular areflexia syndrome(CANVAS)is a neurodegenerative disease of the *** disease progression is slow,with up to 25%of people diagnosed needing to use a wheelchair after 15 years from *** symptoms arise from centrally-mediated ocular movement degradation and the reduced vestibular-ocular reflex functioning *** date,no report has shown an improvement in VOr gain or gait outcome measures in someone with CANVAS after a course of vestibular physical *** description:A 65-year-old male,Patient X,first noticed symptoms in his fourth decade of life and was diagnosed with(CANVAS)in his seventh *** X reported numbness and tingling in his hands and feet,decreased ability to perform daily activities,and several ***:Patient X completed a four-month course of vestibular physical therapy,including vestibular ocular reflex exercises,balance training,gait training,and the VestAid application for eye gaze compliance *** Vestaid application uses eyes and facial recognition software to record the percentage of time that the patient kept their eyes on the ***:After vestibular therapy,Patient X had a clinically meaningful improvement in gait speed:from 1.02 m/s to 1.13 m/s and in the Functional gait Assessment from 20/30 to 27/*** X's eye gaze compliance improved from a median of 43%(range 25e68%)to a median of 67%(58e83%).Discussion:This case study demonstrates that vestibular rehabilitation improved eye gaze compliance and functional outcomes in a person living with CANVAS.

Therapeutic potential of mesenchymal stem cells in the treatment of acute liver failure

Acute liver failure(ALF)is a severe and life-threatening condition in which rapid deterioration of liver function develops in a patient who has no preexisting liver *** stem cells(MSCs)are immunoregulatory stem cells which are able to modulate phenotype and function of all immune cells that play pathogenic role in the development and progression of *** in juxtacrine and paracrine manner attenuate antigen-presenting properties of dendritic cells and macrophages,reduce production of inflammatory cytokines in T lymphocytes,suppress hepatotoxicity of natural killer T(NKT)cells and promote generation and expansion of immunosuppressive T,B and NKT regulatory cells in acutely inflamed *** to their nano-sized dimension and lipid envelope,intravenously injected MSC-derived exosomes(MSC-Exos)may by-pass all biological barriers to deliver MSC-sourced immunoregulatoy factors directly into the liver-infiltrated immune cells and injured *** obtained by us and others revealed that intravenous administration of MSCs and MSC-Exos efficiently attenuated detrimental immune response and acute inflammation in the liver,suggesting that MSCs and MSC-Exos could be considered as potentially new remedies in the immunotherapy of *** this review,we emphasize the current knowledge about molecular and cellular mechanisms which are responsible for MSC-based modulation of liver-infiltrated immune cells and we discuss different insights regarding the therapeutic potential of MSCs in liver regeneration.

Myocarditis is now recognized as a rare complication of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)mrNA vaccination,particularly in adolescent and young adult *** the authorization of the Pfizer-BioNTech^(TM)and Moderna^(TM)mrNA vaccines targeting the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2(SArSCoV-2)spike protein,the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC)has reported 1175 confirmed cases of myocarditis after COVID-19 vaccination in individuals ages 30 years and younger as of January *** to CDC data in June 2021,the incidence of vaccine-mediated myocarditis in males ages 12-29 years old was estimated to be 40.6 cases per million second doses of COVID-19 mrNA vaccination *** with cases of COVID-19 vaccinemediated myocarditis typically present with acute chest pain and elevated serum troponin levels,often within one week of receiving the second dose of mrNA COVID-19 *** cases follow a benign clinical course with prompt resolution of *** mechanisms of COVID-19 vaccine myocarditis include molecular mimicry between SArS-CoV-2 spike protein and self-antigens and the triggering of preexisting dysregulated immune pathways in predisposed *** higher incidence of COVID-19 vaccine myocarditis in young males may be explained by testosterone and its role in modulating the immune response in *** is limited data on long-term outcomes in these cases given the recency of their *** CDC continues to recommend COVID-19 vaccination for everyone 5 years of age and older given the greater risk of serious complications related to natural COVID-19 infection including hospitalization,multisystem organ dysfunction,and *** study is needed to better understand the immunopathology and long-term outcomes behind COVID-19 mrNA vaccine-mediated myocarditis.

Comparison of 2-Acetyl-1-Pyrroline (2AP) in rice Leaf at Different growth Stages Using gas Chromatography

Aromatic rice lines were examined for 2-Acetyl-1-Pyrroline (2AP) content in leaf tissue at five different growth stages (tillering, panicle initiation, 50% heading, booting, and maturity). A small plot trial with plot size of 1.42 m × 4.88 m (7 row-plots) was arranged in completely randomize design with three replications. Dry-seeded, delayed flood cultural practice was used in this study. The experiment was conducted at three locations. The average 2AP concentrations in leaf tissue at tillering stages were higher than the other four growth stages. 2AP levels were declined when rice plant reached booting. AP levels decreased slightly at heading stage and decreased significantly at maturity. There was no significant different between 2AP in leaf at 50% heading from three locations as well as the 2AP content in rice grain. Correlations between 2AP in leaf and 2AP in grain were significantly in all five growth stages. The highest correlation coefficient was found between 2AP in leaf at booting and grain (r = 0.811**) and lowest was in the leaf at harvest (r = 0.564**). results indicated that 2AP could be determined in leaf tissue at early growth stage.

reforestation Programs in Southwest China:reported Success,Observed Failure, and the reasons Why

Ever since the disastrous floods of 1998, the Chinese government has used the Natural Forest Protection and Sloping Land Conversion Programs to promote afforestation and reforestation as means to reduce runoff, control erosion, and stabilize local livelihoods. These two ambitious programs have been reported as large-scale successes, contributing to an overall increase in China’s forest cover and to the stated goals of environmental stabilization. A small-scale field study at the project level of the implementation of these two programs in Baiwu Township, Yanyuan County, Sichuan, casts doubt upon the accuracy and reliability of these claims of success; ground observations revealed utter failure in some sites and only marginal success in others. reasons for this discrepancy are posited as involving ecological, economic, and bureaucratic factors. Further research is suggested to determine whether these discrepancies are merely local aberrations or represent larger-scale failures in reforestation programs.

Influence of Human Pressure on Forest resources and Productivity at Stand and Tree Scales: The Case Study of Yunnan Pine in SW China

This paper examines human impact on stands and individual trees of Pinus yunnanensis growing near the small mountain villages of Pianshui and Yangjuan in southwestern Sichuan Province,*** an effort to assess whether use of these forests was sustainable,we examined the effects of human use in two ***,we directly measured the effect of cutting branches,for fuel and fodder,on tree *** hypothesized that branch cutting would negatively impact tree *** established 12 plots on four hills and compared 14 pairs of trees,one tree in each pair with an apparently full crown and the other with a considerable portion of the crown ***,we assessed stand and tree properties over a 500 m elevation gradient above the villages where we hypothesized that as elevation increases,stand and tree properties should show fewer human *** extensive branch cutting reduced the live crown,tree height and diameter,compensatory processes likely enabled trees to recover and to add basal area increments(BAIs) similar to those added by trees with full *** and stands close to villages showed less growth and lower basal areas,respectively,than stands and trees at intermediate or distant elevations from *** relatively close to the villages showed considerable effects of human-related disturbances such as branch cutting,grazing,tree and shrub removal,losses of litter,and human and animal *** areas had increased soil erosion and often loss of the ‘A' *** close to villages had younger trees,lower stand basal areas,smaller basal area increments,and more *** results suggest an increasingly vulnerable interface between occupants of these two villages and their surrounding forests.
