Models and Neural Bases of the Believing Process

Departing from the long debates on the role of faith/belief, recent interdisciplinary research has turned to characterize the features of the psychophysical processes underlying believing. Here we review recent cognitive neuroscience models of the believing process and propose a conceptual framework that integrates current theoretical and empiric knowledge about the processes of believing. There are theories that elegantly explain believing as a self-organization process of cognitive and emotional elements. Adding to the component of self-organized belief representation, dual-component models assume a belief evaluation component, which is probably supported by the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and explains the stability of the belief despite the changing environment. Borrowing an idea from the neural models for the mental representation of action or situation, inclusion of both perceptive and action informations as the construct of belief representation allows the intimate relationship between a specific belief and a specific range of behaviour. Furthermore, inclusion of the personal value or affective information in the representation explains the deep impact of one’s emotional and physical state on the believing process. For associating perception, action, and value in a representation, the medial frontal cortex (MFC) may play a key role. recent neuro-cognitive models of self-cognition explain the developmental origin of such a representation and the hierarchically nested structure of three levels of complexity in the representations: basic physical level, interpersonal level, and higher social level. The integrated model provides a comprehensive perspective of the believing process which suggests the importance and future directions of this interdisciplinary approach.

The current performance of biodegradable magnesium-based implants in magnetic resonance imaging:A review

Magnesium-based implants are re-emerging as a substantial amendment to standard orthopaedic implants.A brief introduction of magnesium(Mg)as a biodegradable material and basic magnetic resonance imaging(MrI)principles are *** review aims to highlight the current performance of these implants during examinations with *** also aim to summarise comparisons between Mg-based implants with current standards to emphasise the promotion of biodegradable implants in clinical practice.A comprehensive search of current literature on Mg-based implants and the utilisation of MrI in the studies was ***,recorded artefact behaviour of Mg-based implants during MrI was investigated.A total of nine studies were included in which MrI was employed to image Mg-based *** those studies,four of the nine discuss artefact production caused by the *** successfully imaged regions of interest over all and produced fewer artefacts than other materials used in the *** was employed in contrast angiography,bone growth observation,bone infection healing,and blood *** capabilities of an implant material are vital to translating products into clinical *** findings presented in this review suggest and support the use of Mg-based implants due to their successful visual compatibility with MrI techniques.

Detailing the influence of PEO-coated biodegradable Mg-based implants on the lacuno-canalicular network in sheep bone:A pilot study

An increasing prevalence of bone-related injuries and aging geriatric populations continue to drive the orthopaedic implant market.A hierarchical analysis of bone remodelling after material implantation is necessary to better understand the relationship between implant and ***,which are housed and communicate through the lacuno-canalicular network(LCN),are integral to bone health and remodelling ***,it is essential to examine the framework of the LCN in response to implant materials or surface *** materials offer an alternative solution to permanent implants,which may require revision or removal *** alloys have resurfaced as promising materials due to their bone-like properties and safe degradation in *** further tailor their degradation capabilities,surface treatments such as plasma electrolytic oxidation(PEO)have demonstrated to slow *** the first time,the influence of a biodegradable material on the LCN is investigated by means of non-destructive 3D *** this pilot study,we hypothesize noticeable variations in the LCN caused by altered chemical stimuli introduced by the *** synchrotron-based transmission X-ray microscopy,we have characterised morphological LCN differences around uncoated and PEO-coated WE43 screws implanted into sheep *** specimens were explanted after 4,8,and 12 weeks and regions near the implant surface were prepared for *** from this investigation indicate that the slower degradation of PEO-coated WE43 induces healthier lacunar shapes within the ***,the stimuli perceived by the uncoated material with higher degradation rates induces a greater connected LCN better prepared for bone disturbance.

Duration and intensity of rainfall events with the same erosivity change sediment yield and runoff rates

The effect of different rainfall patterns on surface runoff,infiltration and thus soil losses and sediment concentrations are still in the focus of current *** most simulated rainfall experiments,pre-cipitation is applied at a fixed intensity for a fixed ***,the impact of rainfall patterns on soil erosion processes may be different varying the rainfall duration and intensity that produces an event with similar rainfall erosivity ***-five rainfall events were applied on micro-scale runoff plots in a soil covered with corn straw to evaluate the sediment yield and runoff *** different rainfall types were composed by association of duration(Dur)and intensity(IP)with the same erosivity *** Dur varied from 38 to 106 min and the IP varied from 75.0 to 44.6 mm h^(-1).The sediment yield varied from 1.89±1.26 g m^(-2) to 4.02±2.66 g m^(-2) and runoff ranged from 16.9±8.74 mm to 32.63±10.67 mm with highest rates occurring with high intensity and low *** highest rainfall intensity provides the maximum sediment yield(0.138 g m^(-2) min^(-1))and runoff rates(0.87 mm min^(-1)).The time to start surface runoff varied from 14 to 19.2 min and it was longer in treatments with longer durations and low precipitation *** difference was found in the amount of sediments applying rain with the same erosivity and different associations of duration and ***,the intensity and duration of the rain,with the same erosivity,altered the amount and time of *** rainfall experiments with con-stant intensity and fixed time,the erosion rates depend on the duration of the applied ***,the results of this study can contribute to the development of new perspectives in the design of water erosion experiments with simulated rain considering the duration,intensity and also the association of these variables to produce rainfall that delivery the same soil erosion capacity.

Management of symptomatic neuromas:a narrative review of the most common surgical treatment modalities in amputees

Symptomatic neuromas are an all-too-common complication following limb amputation or extremity trauma,leading to chronic and debilitating pain for *** resection of symptomatic neuromas has proven to be the superior method of intervention,but traditional methods of neuroma resection do not address the underlying pathophysiology leading to the formation of a future symptomatic neuroma and lead to high reoperation *** approaches employ the physiology of peripheral nerve injury to harness the regeneration of nerves to their *** review explores the underlying pathophysiology of neuroma formation and centralization of pain *** compares the traditional surgical approach for symptomatic neuroma resection and describes three novel surgical strategies that harness this pathophysiology of neuroma formation to their *** traditional resection of symptomatic neuromas is currently the standard of care for amputation patients,but new techniques including the regenerative peripheral nerve interface,targeted muscle reinnervation,and intraosseous transposition have shown promise in improving patient pain outcomes for postamputation pain and residual limb *** neuromas are a chronic and debilitating complication following amputation procedures and trauma,and the current standard of care does not address the underlying pathophysiology leading to the formation of the *** techniques are under development that may provide improved patient pain outcomes and a higher level of care for symptomatic neuroma resection.
