Traditional Chinese medicine treatment for COVID-19:An overview of systematic reviews and meta-analyses

Background:Coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)is a rapidly spreading disease that has caused an extensive burden to the world.Consequently,a large number of clinical trials have examined the efficacy of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)for treating and preventing COVID-19,with coinciding proliferation of reviews summarizing these studies.Objective:This study aimed to evaluate the methodological quality and evidence quality of systematic reviews and meta-analyses on the efficacy of TCM.Search strategy:Seven electronic databases,including PubMed,Cochrane library,Web of Science,China National Knowledge Infrastructure,Chongqing VIP,Wanfang Data and SinoMed,were searched for systematic reviews and meta-analyses in October 2021.Search terms such as“Chinese medicine,”“lianhua Qingwen”and“COVID-19”were used.Inclusion criteria:Systematic reviews and meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials that evaluated the efficacy of TCM treatment of COVID-19 were included.Data extraction and analysis:A Measurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews Version 2.0(AMSTAR 2)was used to evaluate the methodological quality.The quality of evidence was graded using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment,Development,and Evaluation(GRADE)system.Data extraction and analysis were performed by two reviewers independently.Results:There were 17 meta-analyses included in our overview.The intervention group was defined as TCM combined with Western medicine,while the control group was Western medicine alone.The methodological quality of all the included studies was moderate to poor.A total of 89 outcome indicators were evaluated,of which,8 were rated as moderate quality,39 as low quality,and 41 as very low quality.Only one outcome measure was graded as being of high quality.The moderate quality of evidence indicated that,for the treatment of COVID-19,the clinical efficacy of TCM in combination with Western medicine was better,in terms of lung recovery,rate of conversion to severe/critical cases,symptom scores,duration of symptoms,mortality,and len

Identification and Expression Profile of a Neuropeptide LFRFamide-like Gene During Different Stages of Gonadal Development in the Cephalopod Sepia pharaonis

Neuropeptides are widely distributed in vertebrates and invertebrates,regulating a variety of physiological activities in the organisms,such as metabolism,feeding and reproduction.In this study,to explore the function of neuropeptide LFRFamide in Sepia pharaonis,the full-length cDNA of LFRFamide-like gene(named SpLFRFL,MG869822.1)was identified with rapid amplification of cDNA ends(RACE)method.The sequence of SpLFRFL was 860 bp in length and encoded 188 amino acids containing 4 different mature peptides:1 copy of PHTPFRFamide,NSLFRFamide,TIFRFamide,and 3 copies of GNLFRFamide.Multiple alignment and phylogenetic analysis results showed that SpLFRFL shared high identity with LFRFamides of Sepia officinalis and Sepiella japonica and had the closest relationship with them.Through quantitative Real-time PCR(qRT-PCR),it was found that the SpLFRFL gene was highly expressed in the optic lobe and brain at three different stages during gonad development in both genders.Moreover,the four mature peptides at a concentration of 0.01μmol L^(−1) could inhibit the protein synthesis in the Chinese hamster ovary cell strain-K1(CHOK1)induced by SpGnRH.These data suggest that SpLFRFL might be involved in the development and reproduction of S.pharaonis.The results can contribute to future studies on neuropeptide evolution and function and benefit the cuttlefish farming.

Importance of oxygen-containing functionalities and pore structures of biochar in catalyzing pyrolysis of homologous poplar

Biochar and bio-oil are produced simultaneously in one pyrolysis process,and they inevitably contact and may interact,influencing the composition of bio-oil and modifying the structure of biochar.In this sense,biochar is an inherent catalyst for pyrolysis.In this study,in order to investigate the influence of functionalities and pore structures of biochar on its capability for catalyzing the conversion of homologous volatiles in bio-oil,three char catalysts(600C,800C,and 800AC)produced via pyrolysis of poplar wood at 600 or 800℃or activated at 800℃,were used for catalyzing pyrolysis of homologous poplar wood at 600℃,respectively.The results indicated that the 600C catalyst was more active than 800C and 800AC for catalyzing cracking of volatiles to form more gas(yield increase by 40.2%)and aromatization of volatiles to form more light or heavy phenolics,due to its abundant oxygen-containing functionalities acting as active sites.The developed pores of the 800AC showed no such catalytic effect but could trap some volatiles and allow their further conversion via sufficient aromatization.Nevertheless,the interaction with the volatiles consumed oxygen on 600C(decrease by 50%),enhancing the aromatic degree and increasing thermal stability.The dominance of deposition of carbonaceous material of a very aromatic nature over 800C and 800AC resulted in net weight gain and blocked micropores but formed additional macropores.The in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy characterization of the catalytic pyrolysis indicated superior activity of 600C for removal of -OH,while conversion of the intermediates bearing C=O was enhanced over all the char catalysts.

A low-noise,high-gain,and large-dynamic-range photodetector based on a JFET and a charge amplifier

We demonstrate a low-noise,high-gain,and large-dynamic-range photodetector(PD)based on a junction field-effect transistor(JFET)and a charge amplifier for the measurement of quantum noise in Bell-state detection(BSD).Particular photodiode junction capacitance allows the silicon N-channel JFET 2sk152 to be matched to the noise requirement for charge amplifier A250.The electronic noise of the PD is effectively suppressed and the signal-to-noise ratio(SNR)is up to 15 dB at the analysis frequency of 2.75 MHz for a coherent laser power of 50.08µW.By combining of the inductor and capacitance,the alternating current(AC)and direct current(DC)branches of the PD can operate linearly in a dynamic range from 25.06µW to 17.50 mW.The PD can completely meet the requirements of SNR and dynamic range for BSD in quantum optics experiments.

Background The thirteen-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine(PCV13)is not included in the national immu-nization program and is administered voluntarily with informed consent in China.In preparation for assessing the impact of pilot introduction in Hainan Province,we conducted a carriage study among children under 5 years of age from four locations in Hainan Province,China.Methods From March to June 2022,nasopharyngeal(NP)swabs,collected from healthy children aged younger than 59 months who lived in the 4 different locations(Haikou,Wanning,Baisha and Qiongzhong)in Hainan Province,were tested for pneumococcus using conventional culture.Pneumococcal isolates were serotyped using the Quel-lung reaction.Risk factors associated with pneumococcal colonization were assessed using univariate analysis and multivariable logistic regression adjusting for age,daycare attendance and other factors.Results Pneumococcus was isolated in 710(30.4%)of the 2333 children enrolled.Of 737 pneumococci,29 serotypes were identifed;60.9%were PCV13 serotypes;the most common vaccine serotypes were 6B(20.4%),19F(13.0%),6A(11.9%)and 23F(6.1%);and the most common nonvaccine serotypes were 23A(12.9%),34(6.1%)and nontypeable(NT)pneumococci(5.6%).Children vaccinated with PCV13 had lower carriage(17.7%vs 32.5%;P=0.0001)and fewer PCV13 serotypes(41.9%vs 62.7%;P=0.0017)compared to unimmunized children.After adjustment,NP carriage Was higher among children attending daycare(aOR=2.3,95%CI:1.7-3.2),living in rural areas(aOR=1.4,95%CI:1.1-1.8),living with siblings(aOR=1.3,95%CI:1.0-1.6)and whose mothers had completed senior high/technical sec-ondary school(aOR=1.5,95%CI:1.1-2.0).In contrast,completion of 3-4 doses of PCV13 were associated with a lower carriage rate(aOR=0.6,95%CI:0.4-0.9).Conclusions We established the baseline of pneumococcal carriage,serotype distribution and PCV13 immuni-zation rates among healthy children under 5 years of age in Hainan Province,prior to the introduction of PCV13 into the national immunization program.The high proport

Elastic three-dimensional phononic topological insulators with Dirac hierarchy

Three-dimensional(3D)phononic topological insulators(TIs)featuring two-dimensional(2D)surface states and one-dimensional(1D)hinge states have opened up a new route for multi-dimensional robust wave transport,providing unprecedented methods for integrated acoustic sensors and energy harvesting devices.However,aiming at the elastic 3D phononic TI with gapless surface states and hinge states,the realization of elastic 3D phononic TIs with gapless surface states and hinge states is a significant challenge due to the complicated multi-mode polarization of elastic waves in 3D structures.In this study,we demonstrate an elastic 3D phononic TI with a Dirac hierarchy by elaborately operating the corresponding spatial symmetries of the chiral honeycomb lattice.First,a 3D double Dirac cone of elastic wave can be achieved by doubling the lattice along the outof-plane direction to fold two iso-frequency Weyl points.The topological phase transitions and 2D gapless two-fold Dirac surface states of elastic wave are realized by breaking the half-lattice spatial translation symmetry.Subsequently,based on the Brillouin zone folding along the in-plane direction,the 2D gapless two-fold surface Dirac cones are folded into four-fold surface Dirac cones.Finally,by inducing the relative radius of adjacent holes to break the in-plane spatial inversion symmetry,the fourfold surface Dirac cones are gapped and associated with a surface state inversion,in which the gapless 1D hinge Dirac dispersion is achieved.This research offers a route for engineering the hierarchies of TIs in 3D elastic wave systems and provides new possibilities for designing 3D ultrasonic devices with unconventional functions.

IQABC-Based Hybrid Deployment Algorithm for Mobile Robotic Agents Providing Network Coverage

Working as aerial base stations,mobile robotic agents can be formed as a wireless robotic network to provide network services for on-ground mobile devices in a target area.Herein,a challenging issue is how to deploy these mobile robotic agents to provide network services with good quality for more users,while considering the mobility of on-ground devices.In this paper,to solve this issue,we decouple the coverage problem into the vertical dimension and the horizontal dimension without any loss of optimization and introduce the network coverage model with maximum coverage range.Then,we propose a hybrid deployment algorithm based on the improved quick artificial bee colony.The algorithm is composed of a centralized deployment algorithm and a distributed one.The proposed deployment algorithm deploy a given number of mobile robotic agents to provide network services for the on-ground devices that are independent and identically distributed.Simulation results have demonstrated that the proposed algorithm deploys agents appropriately to cover more ground area and provide better coverage uniformity.

Thiamine deficiency is characterized by a deficiency of thiamine(vitamin B1),lactic acidosis,pulmonary arterial hypertension(PAH),right-sided heart failure,and peripheral nerve damage.Thiamine deficiency is easily misdiagnosed and missed during clinical practice and is associated with death in severe cases.[1,2]Here we reported a patient who was admitted to the hospital with severe metabolic acidosis and pulmonary hypertension and finally diagnosed with thiamine deficiency by detecting plasma vitamin B1 levels.Since clinically obvious thiamine deficiency is rare,and cases of thiamine deficiency requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation(ECMO)treatment are rarer,we believe that our case will be helpful for emergency clinicians.

Protein lipidation in health and disease:molecular basis,physiological function and pathological implication

Posttranslational modifications increase the complexity and functional diversity of proteins in response to complex external stimuli and internal changes.Among these,protein lipidations which refer to lipid attachment to proteins are prominent,which primarily encompassing five types including S-palmitoylation,N-myristoylation,S-prenylation,glycosylphosphatidylinositol(GPl)anchor and cholesterylation.lipid attachment to proteins plays an essential role in the regulation of protein trafficking,localisation,stability,conformation,interactions and signal transduction by enhancing hydrophobicity.Accumulating evidence from genetic,structural,and biomedical studies has consistently shown that protein lipidation is pivotal in the regulation of broad physiological functions and is inextricably linked to a variety of diseases.Decades of dedicated research have driven the development of a wide range of drugs targeting protein lipidation,and several agents have been developed and tested in preclinical and clinical studies,some of which,such as asciminib and lonafarnib are FDA-approved for therapeutic use,indicating that targeting protein lipidations represents a promising therapeutic strategy.Here,we comprehensively review the known regulatory enzymes and catalytic mechanisms of various protein lipidation types,outline the impact of protein lipidations on physiology and disease,and highlight potential therapeutic targets and clinical research progress,aiming to provide a comprehensive reference for future protein lipidation research.

Differential depression of the glacier equilibrium-line altitudes in the Yarlung Zangbo Downstream Basin in the Last Glacial Maximum compared to the pre-industrial era

Glaciers in the Yarlung Zangbo Downstream Basin(YZDB) are sensitive to global climate change. The equilibrium-line altitude(ELA) is a key indicator of glacial development.Current models for simulating the meteorological ELA underestimate the extent of glacial advance during the Last Glacial Maximum(LGM) in the YZDB and cannot explain the large-scale glacial extension compared with the Yarlung Zangbo Midstream Basin(YZMB). In this study, the distribution of ELA in the LGM is reconstructed using high-resolution 80-km ECHAM5 simulations and empirical relationships between temperature and precipitation.Changes in ELA between the LGM and pre-industrial era(PI) are compared. Our simulated ELA closely fits the published field data. In the YZDB, simulated LGM ELAs range from ca.3500 m to over 4900 m, representing declines of ca. 300–950 m. The ECHAM5 simulations better reflect the complex topographic features than most coarse-resolution climate models,and the ELA distribution is controlled by the spatial arrangement of river valley systems and mountain ranges and their impact on precipitation. Compared with the PI era, most of the monsoon precipitation in the LGM was concentrated in the YZDB, which is the main driver of glacial extension and the differential response of the downstream and midstream basins.
