Cellular metabolism is the fundamental process by which cells maintain growth and self-renewal.It produces energy,furnishes raw materials,and intermedi-ates for biomolecule synthesis,and modulates enzyme activity to sustain normal cellular functions.Cellular metabolism is the foundation of cellular life processes and plays a regulatory role in various biological functions,including pro-grammed cell death.Ferroptosis is a recently discovered form of iron-dependent programmed cell death.The inhibition of ferroptosis plays a crucial role in tumorigenesis and tumor progression.However,the role of cellular metabolism,particularly glucose and amino acid metabolism,in cancer ferroptosis is not well understood.Here,we reviewed glucose,lipid,amino acid,iron and sele-nium metabolism involvement in cancer cell ferroptosis to elucidate the impact of different metabolic pathways on this process.Additionally,we provided a detailed overview of agents used to induce cancer ferroptosis.We explained that the metabolism of tumor cells plays a crucial role in maintaining intracellu-lar redox homeostasis and that disrupting the normal metabolic processes in these cells renders them more susceptible to iron-induced cell death,resulting in enhanced tumor cell killing.The combination of ferroptosis inducers and cel-lular metabolism inhibitors may be a novel approach to future cancer therapy and an important strategy to advance the development of treatments.

Recorded recurrent deep reinforcement learning guidance laws for intercepting endoatmospheric maneuvering missiles

This work proposes a recorded recurrent twin delayed deep deterministic(RRTD3)policy gradient algorithm to solve the challenge of constructing guidance laws for intercepting endoatmospheric maneuvering missiles with uncertainties and observation noise.The attack-defense engagement scenario is modeled as a partially observable Markov decision process(POMDP).Given the benefits of recurrent neural networks(RNNs)in processing sequence information,an RNN layer is incorporated into the agent’s policy network to alleviate the bottleneck of traditional deep reinforcement learning methods while dealing with POMDPs.The measurements from the interceptor’s seeker during each guidance cycle are combined into one sequence as the input to the policy network since the detection frequency of an interceptor is usually higher than its guidance frequency.During training,the hidden states of the RNN layer in the policy network are recorded to overcome the partially observable problem that this RNN layer causes inside the agent.The training curves show that the proposed RRTD3 successfully enhances data efficiency,training speed,and training stability.The test results confirm the advantages of the RRTD3-based guidance laws over some conventional guidance laws.

Phase-field lattice-Boltzmann study on fully coupled thermal-solute-convection dendrite growth of Al-Cu alloy

Dendrite growth is a complex liquid-solid phase transition process involving multiple physical factors.A phase-field lattice-Boltzmann method was developed to simulate the two-and three-dimension dendrite growth of Al-Cu alloy.The effect of fully coupled thermal-solute-convection interaction on the dendrite growth was investigated by incorporating a parallel-adaptive mesh refinement algorithm into the numerical model.By accurately reproducing the latent heat release,solute diffusion and convective transport behaviors at the liquidsolid interface,the interaction mechanism among thermal-solute-convection transport as well as their coupling effects on the dendrite growth dynamics were discussed.The simulation results show that the release of latent heat slows down the dendrite growth rate,and both natural and forced convection disrupt the symmetrical growth of dendrites.Their combination makes the growth of dendrites more complex,capturing important physical aspects such as recalescence,dendrite tip splitting,dendrite tilting,dendrite remelting,and solute plume in the simulation case.Based on the robustness and powerful ability of the numerical model,the formation mechanisms of these physical aspects were revealed.

RNPS1 stabilizes NAT10 protein to facilitate translation in cancer via tRNA ac^(4)C modification

Existing studies have underscored the pivotal role of N-acetyltransferase 10(NAT10) in various cancers. However, the outcomes of protein-protein interactions between NAT10 and its protein partners in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma(HNSCC) remain unexplored. In this study, we identified a significant upregulation of RNA-binding protein with serine-rich domain 1(RNPS1) in HNSCC, where RNPS1 inhibits the ubiquitination degradation of NAT10 by E3 ubiquitin ligase, zinc finger SWIM domain-containing protein 6(ZSWIM6), through direct protein interaction, thereby promoting high NAT10 expression in HNSCC. This upregulated NAT10 stability mediates the enhancement of specific tRNA ac^(4)C modifications, subsequently boosting the translation process of genes involved in pathways such as IL-6 signaling, IL-8 signaling, and PTEN signaling that play roles in regulating HNSCC malignant progression, ultimately influencing the survival and prognosis of HNSCC patients. Additionally, we pioneered the development of TRMC-seq, leading to the discovery of novel t RNA-ac^(4)C modification sites, thereby providing a potent sequencing tool for tRNAac^(4)C research. Our findings expand the repertoire of tRNA ac^(4)C modifications and identify a role of tRNA ac^(4)C in the regulation of mRNA translation in HNSCC.

Simultaneous removal of 1,2-dichlorobenzene and furan over Mn-Ce-Fe oxide catalyst:Catalytic activity and product analysis

The Mn-Ce-Fe mixed oxide(MCFe)was prepared by co-precipitation and the catalytic performance was tested by using 1,2-dichlorobenzene(1,2-DCB)and furan as model molecules of PCDD/F.The effect of O_(2)concentration,SO_(2) and NO on the catalytic activity was studied.At 270℃,the MCFe oxide catalyst presents significant simultaneous removal efficiency of 75.25%and 100%for 1,2-DCB and furan,respectively.Brunauer-Emmett-Teller(BET)method(BET),X-ray diffraction(XRD),scanning electron microscopy(SEM),X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS),Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR),H_2-temperature programmed reduction(H_(2)-TPR),NH_(3)-temperature programmed desorption(NH_3-TPD)and O_(2)-TPD were used to characterize the catalysts before and after the reaction.Competition tests suggest that the oxidation behavior of furan occurred prior to that of 1,2-DCB.According to the intermediate products detected by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS),the by-products include chlorinated hydrocarbons,long-chain hydrocarbons,ketone,etc.Possible catalytic oxidation reaction paths are proposed.

High-performance Ti_(3)C_(2)T_(x)achieved by polyaniline intercalation and gelatinization as a high-energy cathode for zinc-ion capacitor

The actual manufacture of supercapacitors(SCs)is restricted by the inadequate energy density,and the energy density of devices can be properly promoted by assembling zinc-ion capacitors(ZICs)which used capacitive cathode and battery-type anode.Two-dimensional(2D)MXene has brought great focuses in the electrode research on the foundation of large redox-active surface,but the specific capacitance is still affected by the tight stacking of interlaminations.Ti_(3)C_(2)T_(x)@polyaniline(PANI)heterostructures are prepared by uniformly depositing the conductive polymer PANI nanorods as the intercalation agent into the external of Ti_(3)C_(2)T_(x)nanosheets to inhibit stacking.Subsequently,by using graphene oxide(GO)-assisted low-temperature hydrothermal self-assembly manufacture,2D heterostructures are assembled into the three-dimensional(3D)porous crosslinked Ti_(3)C_(2)T_(x)@PANI-reduced graphene oxide(RGO)hydrogels.Attributed to the synergistic work of PANI nanorods,Ti_(3)C_(2)T_(X)nanosheets,and 3D crosslinking frameworks of RGO to match capacitive and battery effects,3D porous hierarchical Ti_(3)C_(2)T_(x)@PANI-RGO heterostructure hydrogels have rich ion transport channels,a large number of active sites,and excellent reaction kinetics.ZIC is assembled by using Ti_(3)C_(2)T_(x)@PANI-RGO heterostructure hydrogels as cathodes and zinc foil as anodes.In this work,Ti_(3)C_(2)T_(x)@PANI-RGO//Zn ZIC exhibits a wide working window(2.0 V),marked specific capacitance(589.89 F·g^(−1)at 0.5 A·g−1),salient energy density(327.71 Wh·kg^(−1)at 513.61 W·kg^(−1)and 192.20 Wh·kg^(−1)at 13,005.87 W·kg^(−1)),and durable cycling stability(97.87%capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles at 10 A·g^(−1)).This study emphasizes the device design of ZICs and the broad prospect of Ti_(3)C_(2)T_(x)-based hydrogels as viable cathodes for ZICs.

In vivo imaging reveals a synchronized correlation among neurotransmitter dynamics during propofol and sevoflurane anesthesia

General anesthesia is widely applied in clinical practice.However,the precise mechanism of loss of consciousness induced by general anesthetics remains unknown.Here,we measured the dynamics of five neurotransmitters,includingγ-aminobutyric acid,glutamate,norepinephrine,acetylcholine,and dopamine,in the medial prefrontal cortex and primary visual cortex of C57BL/6 mice through in vivo fiber photometry and genetically encoded neurotransmitter sensors under anesthesia to reveal the mechanism of general anesthesia from a neurotransmitter perspective.Results revealed that the concentrations of γ-aminobutyric acid,glutamate,norepinephrine,and acetylcholine increased in the cortex during propofol-induced loss of consciousness.Dopamine levels did not change following the hypnotic dose of propofol but increased significantly following surgical doses of propofol anesthesia.Notably,the concentrations of the five neurotransmitters generally decreased during sevoflurane-induced loss of consciousness.Furthermore,the neurotransmitter dynamic networks were not synchronized in the non-anesthesia groups but were highly synchronized in the anesthetic groups.These findings suggest that neurotransmitter dynamic network synchronization may cause anesthetic-induced loss of consciousness.

Research on the mechanism of the two-dimensional ultrasonic surface burnishing process to enhance the wear resistance for aluminum alloy

The gradient nanostructure is machined on the aluminum(Al)alloy by the two-dimensional ultrasonic surface burnishing process(2D-USBP).The mechanism of why the gradient nanostructure enhances wear resistance is investigated.The mechanical properties and microstructure characterization for the gradient nanostructure are performed by operating a nanoindenter,transmission electron microscopy(TEM),and electron backscattered diffraction(EBSD).Dry wear tests are performed on the samples before and after machining to evaluate the wear resistance and mechanisms.The effect of the gradient nanostructure on the wear resistance is explored by developing the crystal plasticity(CP)finite element and molecular dynamics(MD)models.The characterization results show that the 2D-USBP sample prepared a gradient structure of~600μm thick on the aluminum surface,increasing the surface hardness from 1.13 to 1.71 GPa and reducing the elastic modulus from 78.84 to 70.14 GPa.The optimization of the surface microstructure and the increase of the mechanical properties effectively enhance the wear resistance of the sample,with 41.20%,39.07%,and 54.58% of the wear scar areas for the 2D-USBP treated samples to the original samples under 5,10,and 15 N loads,respectively.The gradient nanostructure hinders the slip of dislocations inside the sample during the wear process and reduces the size and scope of plastic deformation;meanwhile,the resistance to deformation,adhesion,and crack initiation and propagation of the sample surface is improved,resulting in enhanced wear resistance.

Mapping upland crop–rice cropping systems for targeted sustainable intensification in South China

Upland crop-rice cropping systems(UCR)facilitate sustainable agricultural intensification.Accurate UCR cultivation mapping is needed to ensure food security,sustainable water management,and rural revitalization.However,datasets describing cropping systems are limited in spatial coverage and crop types.Mapping UCR is more challenging than crop identification and most existing approaches rely heavily on accurate phenology calendars and representative training samples,which limits its applications over large regions.We describe a novel algorithm(RRSS)for automatic mapping of upland crop-rice cropping systems using Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar(SAR)and Sentinel-2 Multispectral Instrument(MSI)data.One indicator,the VV backscatter range,was proposed to discriminate UCR and another two indicators were designed by coupling greenness and pigment indices to further discriminate tobacco or oilseed UCR.The RRSS algorithm was applied to South China characterized by complex smallholder rice cropping systems and diverse topographic conditions.This study developed 10-m UCR maps of a major rice bowl in South China,the Xiang-Gan-Min(XGM)region.The performance of the RRSS algorithm was validated based on 5197 ground-truth reference sites,with an overall accuracy of 91.92%.There were7348 km^(2) areas of UCR,roughly one-half of them located in plains.The UCR was represented mainly by oilseed-UCR and tobacco-UCR,which contributed respectively 69%and 15%of UCR area.UCR patterns accounted for only one-tenth of rice production,which can be tripled by intensification from single rice cropping.Application to complex and fragmented subtropical regions suggested the spatiotemporal robustness of the RRSS algorithm,which could be further applied to generate 10-m UCR datasets for application at national or global scales.

Quick and automatic detection of co-seismic landslides with multifeature deep learning model

Co-seismic landslide detection is essential for post-disaster rescue and risk assessment after an earthquake event.However,a variety of ground objects,including roads and bare land,have spectral characteristics similar to those of co-seismic landslides,making it difficult to gather information and assess their impact rapidly and accurately.Therefore,an automatic detection method based on a deep learning model,named ENVINet5,with multiple features(ENVINet5_MF)was proposed to solve this problem and improve the detection accuracy of co-seismic landslides.The ENVINet5_MF method is advantageous for co-seismic landslide detection because it features a landslide gain index(LGI)that effectively eliminates the spectral interference of bare land and roads.We conducted two experiments using multi-temporal PlanetScope images acquired in Hokkaido,Japan,and Mainling,China.The accuracy evaluation and rationality analysis show that ENVINet5_MF performed better than comparative methods and that the co-seismic landslide areas detected by ENVINet5_MF were the most consistent with ground reference data.The findings of this study suggest that ENVINet5_MF can provide an efficient and accurate method for coseismic landslide detection to ensure a rapid response to co-seismic landslide disasters.
