Amphioxus appears to lack free circulating blood cells. How it clears invading pathogens from its body remains unknown to date. We demonstrate here that amphioxus Branchiostoma belcheri is capable of efficiently eliminating the invading bacterium Escherichia coli from its humoral fluid,and the complement and lysozyme are both involved in the elimination of the invading pathogen. Both the com-plement and lysozyme act in concert against the invading bacterium,but the complement appears to play a more dominant role than the lysozyme.

As the relative sea-level rose, a paleo-estuary was formed by the marine inundation of the braided river incised valley during the period of the lower sub-member of the upper member of the Kalpingtage. formation of the Silurian in the Tarim Basin, west china. Sandstone-mudstone rhythmite, tidal structures and bimodal cross-bedding are common in these deposits, indicating that tides played a significant role in generating the sedimentary structures and the estuary type was tide-dominated. Five depositional facies were grouped： tidal river, sandy and muddy subtidal flat, tidal flat, tidal bar, tidal channel on the basis of lithology, electric properties, rhythmicity, sedimentary structure, fossil and the contact relationship. The sediment distribution showing first fining seaward and subsequent coarsening seaward from head to mouth, implies the two sediment sources in the paleo-estuary. The paleo-estuary of the Tarim Basin is very different from other representative estuaries. High frequency velocity fluctuations were measured by using an acoustic Doppler velocimeter (ADV) in the tidal bottom boundary layer (BBL) of the Yellow Sea (YS) for 25 h. The turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate and the bottom shear stress were estimated and analyzed. Results show that: (1) in the tidal BBL of the YS, the variations of the dissipation rate and the bottom shear stress during 25 hare (1.8×10-8-3.4×10 -5) W·kg-1 and (6.6×10-4-7.5×10-1) N·m - 2 respectively, indicating that there are strong dissipations in the tidal BBL of the YS; (2) in the well-mixed tidal BBL, the turbulence is mainly shear-induced locally and the production and dissipation are generally in equilibrium; (3) for the seas where the semidiurnal tidal current is dominant, both the dissipation rate and the bottom shear stress exhibit a strong quarter-diurnal variation; (4) the mean bottom drag coefficient Cd (0.45) is 0.0017 (corresponding Cd( 1.00) = 0.0015), but it has significant variations (0.0005-0.0082). The mean bottom roughness length is 2.8×10-5 m.

In traditional data clustering, similarity of a cluster of objects is measured by distance between objects. Such measures are not appropriate for categorical data. A new clustering criterion to determine the similarity between points with categorical attributes is pre- sented. Furthermore, a new clustering algorithm for categorical attributes is addressed. A single scan of the dataset yields a good clus- tering, and more additional passes can be used to improve the quality further.

Three-dimension reconstruction from serial sections has been used in the last decade to obtain information concerning three-dimensional microstructural ge-ometry. One of the crucial steps of three-dimension reconstruction is getting compact and fairing grain contours. Based on the achievement of closed raw con-tours of ceramic composite grains by using wavelet and level set, an adaptive method is adopted for the polygonal approximation of the digitized raw contours. Instead of setting a fixed length of support region in advance, the novel method computes the suitable length of support region for each point to find the best es-timated curvature. The dominant points are identified as the points with local maximum estimated curvatures. Periodic closed B-spline approximation is used to find the most compact B-spline grain boundary contours within the given tolerance. A flexible distance selection approach is adopted to obtain the common knot vector of serial contours consisting of less knots that contain enough degrees of freedom to guarantee the existence of a B-spline curve interpolating each contour. Finally, a B-spline surface interpolating the serial contours is generated via B-spline surface skinning.

In order to check the traditional core loss formula, the core loss spectrum P(f) of Co-based amorphous soft magnetic alloy with constant permeability has been studied. It is found that within a high frequency range from 10 kHz to 200 kHz and at Bm = 0. 1 T,the P(f) has the fractal structure P (f) = Po, and with the increasing of induced anisotropy energy Ku, the fractal dimension Dfrises, thus the total power loss at high frequency increases and the frequency characteristic of P(f) becomes worse.

An obvious characteristic of the baroclinic large-scale motions in the equatorial ocean is that the meridional scale H of motion is far smaller than the zonal scale L. The scaling of motion carefully with this striking characteristic in this paper results in two conclusions, i. e., the Coriolis terms associated with the horizontal component of the rotation vector cannot be neglected in the governing equations; and the use of the absence of heating is not suitable to the equatorial region. In this paper the equatorial β-plane nondimensional governing equations with the small parametersδ_0 andδ_1 have been Obtained.

According to the mass action law and the coexistence theory of slagstructure, the calculating models of mass action concentration for CaO-MgO-FeO-Fe_2O_3-SiO_2,CaO-MgO-MnO-FeO-Fe_2O_3-P_2O_5-SiO_2 and CaO-MgO-MnO-FeO-Fe_2O_3-Al_2O_3-P_2O_5-SiO_2 slag melts areformulated and sulphur distribution between the slag melts and liquid iron is treated. It is foundthat CaO, MnO and FeO promote desulphurization, while MgO is detrimental to desulphurization. Inaddition, the sulphur distribution coefficients between the slag melts and liquid iron andpresented.

An empirical equation of carbon solubility in Fe-Cr-C melts is regressed based on the experimental data from references. Acalculating model of mass action concentrations for these melts is formulated on the basis of the coexistence theory of metaIlic melts in-volving compound formation, the phase diagram of Cr-C system as well as thermodynamic data of Fe-Cr-C melts. According to the mod-el, the standard Gibbs free energies of formation of CrC and Cr3C2 are obtained. Satisfactory agreement between the calculated and me-asured values shows that the model can reflect the structural characteristics of Fe-Cr-C melts.

Based on the data measured during Arctic scientific expedition of china in 1999, the characteristics of temperature and salinity distributions around the Chukchi Plateau and its ad-jacent regions have been studied. It was found that the intermediate water with temperature higher than 0.5℃ existed in all parts of a 640 km section with a maximum temperature of 0.85℃ indicating a strong signal of the warming in Arctic Intermediate Water in 1999. Two important phenomena are described in this paper. First, the temperature of warm water was horizontally nonuniform. In the area of Chukchi Plateau, the temperature was higher, the layer of warm water was thicker and the depth of the warm water core was shallower than those in the area of con-tinental slope. The horizontal nonuniformity of the temperature distribution of warming water im-plies that the upward heat flux should also be nonuniform, thus exerting different effects on sea ice thickness, ice extent, and air-sea heat exchange. The mechanism to generate higher tem-perature in the plateau region was the bypassing of current around the plateau area caused by the special local topography, which restricted water exchange across the plateau and conserved heat in the water body. Second, the deep water down to 1400 m was also warming with a tem-perature increase of 0.2℃. The warming in deep water reflects the occurrence of complicated heat redistribution processes in the intermediate water, which altered the thermal structure in the upper 1400 m. The warming data embody the obvious impact of global climate change on the Arctic Ocean and further studies are wanted.
