Micronodular thymic tumor with lymphoid stroma: A case report and review of the literature

BACKGROUND Micronodular thymic tumors with lymphoid stroma include micronodular thymoma with lymphoid stroma(MNT)and micronodular thymic carcinoma with lymphoid hyperplasia(MNC),whose micromorphological features are lymphoid stromal hyperplasia and nodular arrangement of tumor epithelial *** type of tumor is rare;therefore,the corresponding clinical guidelines,histopathological diagnostic criteria,prognostic factors,and therapeutic regimens have not been *** SUMMARY This study covers a novel presentation of MNC in a patient and summarizes the clinicopathological characteristics of this type of tumor by using pooled-analysis ***,this tumor type is a series of benign to malignant *** establish the following criteria for the classification of micronodular thymic tumors with lymphoid stroma:(1)Tumor cells with moderate-to-severe dysplasia;(2)Tumor cell mitotic figures>2/10 high-power fields;(3)Appearance of neoplastic necrosis;(4)No terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-positive immature T lymphocytes within the tumor;(5)Tumor cells with a Ki-67 index≥10%;and(6)Tumor cells express *** that fall into the borders of two categories in terms of morphology are attributed to atypical *** is proposed that the diagnosis of MNT should be established on the diagnostic criteria mentioned *** Our diagnostic algorithm can effectively distinguish malignant tumors from benign tumors and provides a potent basis for predicting a prognosis,which offers a practical reference for oncologists and pathologists.

Surveillance recommendations for gastric cancer（GC） in current guidelines focused on advanced precancerous lesions and were based on precise diagnosis of severity/extent of baseline lesions. We aimed to develop a less endoscopy-related equipment-dependent risk-stratification tool, and assessed whether mild-precursor-lesion patients can be safely exempt from surveillance. In the multicenter communitybased cohort, 75,051 participants receiving baseline endoscopy were enrolled during 2015–2017 and followed-up until 2021. Cumulative incidence rates（CIRs） of GC for precancerous-conditions were calculated by Kaplan-Meier method and compared by Log-rank tests. Mixedeffects Cox regression models were used to detect potential factors for progression towards GC. A risk score was calculated as counts of selected factors. An independent cohort, including 26,586 participants was used for external validation. During a median follow-up of 6.25 years, CIRs of GC were 0.302%, 0.436%, and 4.756% for normal group, non-neoplastic（atrophic gastritis/intestinal metaplasia） and neoplastic lesions（low-grade/high-grade dysplasia）, respectively(Ptrend<0.001). Four predictors, including male, ≥60 years, smoking, and limited vegetable consumption, were selected for risk-stratification. High-risk patients（≥3 risk factors） with non-neoplastic lesions showed higher GC risks（adjusted HR=7.73, 95%CI: 4.29–13.92）, and their four-year CIR reached the one-year CIR of neoplastic lesions. Further categorizing non-neoplastic lesions by histological grade, both patients with moderate-to-severe lesions（aHR=3.07, 95%CI: 1.67–5.64） and high-risk patients with mild lesions（aHR=7.29, 95%CI: 3.58–14.86） showed higher risks. Consistent trends were observed in validation cohort. High-risk mild-precursor-lesion patients should receive surveillance within 3–5 years after baseline screening. Our study provides evidence on supplementing current guideline recommendations.

Infiltration by monocytes of the central nervous system and its role in multiple sclerosis: reflections on therapeutic strategies

Mononuclear macrophage infiltration in the central nervous system is a prominent feature of neuroinflammation. Recent studies on the pathogenesis and progression of multiple sclerosis have highlighted the multiple roles of mononuclear macrophages in the neuroinflammatory process. Monocytes play a significant role in neuroinflammation, and managing neuroinflammation by manipulating peripheral monocytes stands out as an effective strategy for the treatment of multiple sclerosis, leading to improved patient outcomes. This review outlines the steps involved in the entry of myeloid monocytes into the central nervous system that are targets for effective intervention: the activation of bone marrow hematopoiesis, migration of monocytes in the blood, and penetration of the blood–brain barrier by monocytes. Finally, we summarize the different monocyte subpopulations and their effects on the central nervous system based on phenotypic differences. As activated microglia resemble monocyte-derived macrophages, it is important to accurately identify the role of monocyte-derived macrophages in disease. Depending on the roles played by monocyte-derived macrophages at different stages of the disease, several of these processes can be interrupted to limit neuroinflammation and improve patient prognosis. Here, we discuss possible strategies to target monocytes in neurological diseases, focusing on three key aspects of monocyte infiltration into the central nervous system, to provide new ideas for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.

Impacts of the annual cycle of background SST in the tropical Pacific on the phase and amplitude of ENSO

The dominant annual cycle of sea surface temperature(SST)in the tropical Pacific exhibits an antisymmetric mode,which explains 83.4%total variance,and serves as a background of El Niño-Southern Oscillation(ENSO).However,there is no consensus yet on its anomalous impacts on the phase and amplitude of *** on data during 1982-2022,results show that anomalies of the antisymmetric mode can affect the evolution of ENSO on the interannual scale via Bjerknes feedback,in which the positive(negative)phase of the antisymmetric mode can strengthen El Niño(La Niña)in boreal winter via an earlier(delayed)seasonal cycle transition and larger(smaller)annual *** magnitude of the SST anomalies in the equatorial eastern Pacific can reach more than±0.3◦C,regulated by the changes in the antisymmetric mode based on random sensitivity *** reveal the spatial pattern of the annual cycle associated with the seasonal phase-locking of ENSO evolution and provide new insight into the impact of the annual cycle of background SST on ENSO,which possibly carries important implications for forecasting ENSO.

Constraints on holographic QCD phase transitions from PTA observations

The underlying physics of QCD phase transition in the early Universe remains largely unknown due to its strong-coupling nature during the quark-gluon plasma/hadron gas transition, yet a holographic model has been proposed to quantitatively fit the lattice QCD data while with its duration of the first-order phase transition(FoPT) left undetermined. At specific baryon chemical potential, the first-order QCD phase transition agrees with the observational constraint of baryon asymmetry. It, therefore, provides a scenario for phase transition gravitational waves(GWs) within the standard model of particle physics. If these background GWs could contribute dominantly to the recently claimed common-spectrum red noise from pulsar timing array(PTA) observations, the duration of this FoPT can be well constrained, and the associated primordial black holes are still allowed by current observations.

Comparative study on boundary lubrication of Ti_(3)C_(2)T_(x) MXene and graphene oxide in water

The emerging use of two-dimensional(2D)nanomaterials as boundary lubricants in water offers numerous benefits over oil-based lubricants;whereas the friction reduction varies significantly with nanomaterial type,size,loading,morphology,*** oxide(GO)and Ti_(3)C_(2)T_(x)MXene,a relatively new 2D material,are investigated as boundary lubricants in water in this *** contact pair mainly includes Si3N4 balls and Si *** results found(1)monodispersed GO offers better lubricity than monodispersed MXene under identical concentration and testing conditions;and(2)the mixed dispersion of GO and MXene(0.1 mg/ml:0.1 mg/ml)produced the lowest friction coefficient of~0.021,a value 4×and 10×lower than that produced by comparable mono-dispersions of GO or MXene,*** track analysis,focused ion beam microscopy,in-situ contact observation,and atomic force microscopy(AFM)characterization suggest(1)GO nanoflakes have higher adhesion than MXene and are more easily adsorbed on the tribopairs’surfaces,and(2)GO/MXene tribofilm has a layered nanostructure constituting GO,MXene,amorphous carbon,and TiO_(2).We further hypothesized that the high lubricity of GO/MXene results from the synergy of GO’s high adhesiveness,MXene’s load support ability,and the low shear strength of both *** present study highlights the key role of tribofilm stability in water-based boundary lubrication using state-of-the-art 2D nanomaterials.
