El Niño and the AMO Sparked the Astonishingly Large Margin of Warming in the Global Mean Surface Temperature in 2023

In 2023,the majority of the Earth witnessed its warmest boreal summer and autumn since 1850.Whether 2023 will indeed turn out to be the warmest year on record and what caused the astonishingly large margin of warming has become one of the hottest topics in the scientific community and is closely connected to the future development of human society.We analyzed the monthly varying global mean surface temperature(GMST)in 2023 and found that the globe,the land,and the oceans in 2023 all exhibit extraordinary warming,which is distinct from any previous year in recorded history.Based on the GMST statistical ensemble prediction model developed at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics,the GMST in 2023 is predicted to be 1.41℃±0.07℃,which will certainly surpass that in 2016 as the warmest year since 1850,and is approaching the 1.5℃ global warming threshold.Compared to 2022,the GMST in 2023 will increase by 0.24℃,with 88%of the increment contributed by the annual variability as mostly affected by El Niño.Moreover,the multidecadal variability related to the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation(AMO)in 2023 also provided an important warming background for sparking the GMST rise.As a result,the GMST in 2023 is projected to be 1.15℃±0.07℃,with only a 0.02℃ increment,if the effects of natural variability—including El Niño and the AMO—are eliminated and only the global warming trend is considered.

The source of Double ITCZ induced by the SST bias over the tropical western Pacific as reflected in CAS-ESM2 Model

“Double ITCZ”is a common precipitation bias over the tropical Pacific in current climate models and Earth system models,but the reasons for its formation are still worth exploring and discussing.In this study,we adopted the second version of Chinese Academy of Sciences Earth System Model(CAS-ESM2),by comparing a set of sea surface temperature(SST)bias correction experiments over the tropical Pacific,to explore the possible mechanism of SST bias on inducing the“Double ITCZ”from the perspective of the climatic annual mean bias in the coupled model.We revealed that the simulated climatic annual mean SST bias over the tropical Pacific can affect the bias of latent heat flux through the saturation specific humidity,and the bias of latent heat flux can further affect that of vertical velocity of humid air by the condensation release mechanism,and finally modulate the simulated bias in precipitation.Furthermore,through the inter-comparison between different experiments,it is found that the source of Double ITCZ might mainly come from the annual mean SST bias over the tropical western Pacific through the proposed air-sea coupled process of“SST-saturated specific humidity-latent heat flux-vertical velocity-precipitation”,indicating a possible way on reducing the couple biases in models over the tropical Pacific to improve the accuracy of CAS-ESM2 for climate simulation.

Switching,explosion,and chaos of multi-wavelength soliton states in ultrafast fiber lasers

Because of the complexity and difficulty of realizing a multi-wavelength soliton state,reports on its internal dynamic characteristics are scarce.In this study,the switching and periodic soliton explosion processes of the multi-wavelength soliton state in a negative dispersion passively mode-locked fiber laser are realized.The generation of the multi-wavelength soliton state undergoes the process of noise,oscillation,and stable mode-locking,and the splitting and annihilation of solitons with different group velocities directly impact the generation and disappearance of three wavelengths.Positive and negative dispersion lead to different group velocities of solitons.The presence and displacement of solitons with different group velocities cause soliton collisions,which lead to soliton explosions.A soliton experiences relative phase oscillation,chaos,and oscillation,as well as convergence and separation before and after an explosion.With an increase in parameters related to pump power,single-soliton oscillation,multi-wavelength solitons,and chaos are found in experiments and simulations,proving the relevance and reliability between simulation and experimental results.This work promotes the dynamical study of multi-soliton collisions in nonlinear science and the development of chaos theory in multi-comb lasers.

A newly proposed heatstroke-induced coagulopathy score in patients with heat illness: A multicenter retrospective study in China

Purpose:In patients with heatstroke, disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is associated with greater risk of in-hospital mortality. However, time-consuming assays or a complex diagnostic system may delay immediate treatment. Therefore, the present study proposes a new heatstroke-induced coagulopathy (HIC) score in patients with heat illness as an early warning indicator for DIC.Methods:This retrospective study enrolled patients with heat illness in 24 Chinese hospitals from March 2021 to May 2022. Patients under 18 years old, with a congenital clotting disorder or liver disease, or using anticoagulants were excluded. Data were collected on demographic characteristics, routine blood tests, conventional coagulation assays and biochemical indexes. The risk factors related to coagulation function in heatstroke were identified by regression analysis, and used to construct a scoring system for HIC. The data of patients who met the diagnostic criteria for HIC and International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis defined-DIC were analyzed. All statistical analyses were performed using SPSS 26.0.Results:The final analysis included 302 patients with heat illness, of whom 131 (43.4%) suffered from heatstroke, including 7 death (5.3%). Core temperature (OR = 1.681, 95% CI 1.291 - 2.189, p < 0.001), prothrombin time (OR = 1.427, 95% CI 1.175 - 1.733, p < 0.001) and D-dimer (OR = 1.242, 95% CI 1.049 - 1.471, p = 0.012) were independent risk factors for heatstroke, and therefore used to construct an HIC scoring system because of their close relation with abnormal coagulation. A total score ≥ 3 indicated HIC, and HIC scores correlated with the score for International Society of Thrombosis and Hemostasis-DIC (r = 0.8848, p < 0.001). The incidence of HIC (27.5%) was higher than that of DIC (11.2%) in all of 131 heatstroke patients. Meanwhile, the mortality rate of HIC (19.4%) was lower than that of DIC (46.7%). In this work,we present the investigation of the quantum dot color filter(QDCF)micro-light emitting diode(micro-LED)display.Green and red quantum dot photoresist(QDPR)materials are patterned into a pixelated array and precisely bonded with an all-blue micro-light emitting diode(micro-LED)substrate,forming a red,green,and blue(RGB)full color display through color conversion.A few factors that influence the achievable color gamut are further investigated.The resulting 1.1-inch 228-pixels per inch(ppi)display demo shows the good performance.The findings in this paper pave a way to the future industrialization of the micro-LED display.

Integrative transcriptome analysis identifies MYBL2 as a poor prognosis marker for osteosarcoma and a pan-cancer marker of immune infiltration

MYBL2(MYB proto-oncogene like 2)is an emerging prognostic marker for malignant tumors,and its potential role in osteosarcoma and its relationship with immune infiltration in pan-cancer is yet to be elucidated.We constructed a transcription factor activity profile of os-teosarcoma using the single-cell regulatory network inference algorithm based on single-cell RNA sequencing data obtained from the Gene Expression Omnibus.Subsequently,we calcu-lated the extent of MYBL2 activation in malignant proliferative osteoblasts.We also explored the association between MYBL2 and chemotherapy resistance in osteosarcoma.Furthermore,we systematically correlated MYBL2 with immunological signatures in the tumor microenviron-ment in pan-cancer,including immune cell infiltration,immune checkpoints,and tumor immu-notherapy prognosis.Finally,we developed and validated a risk score(MRGS),derived an osteosarcoma risk score nomogram based on MRGS,and tested its ability to predict prognosis.MYBL2 and gene enrichment analyses in osteosarcoma and pan-cancer revealed that MYBL2 was positively correlated with cell proliferation and tumor immune pathways.MYBL2 expres-sion positively correlated with SLC19A1 in pan-cancer and osteosarcoma cell lines.Pan-cancer immune infiltration analysis revealed that MYBL2 was correlated with myeloid-derived sup-pressor cells,Th2 cell infiltration,CD276,RELT gene expression,and tumor mutation burden.

A Low Cost, Green Sustainable and Biodegradable Biomass-based Fluorine-free Water and Oil Repellent

With the global ban on plastics intensifying, the substitution of plastic with paper has garnered increasing attention. However, the inadequate water and oil repellency of pulp molding hinders its practical applications. Currently, the common method to enhance the oil and water repellency of pulp molding is by adding fluorinated water and oil repellents. Nevertheless, fluorinated compounds are environmentally and physiologically harmful. Therefore, the development of fluorine-free, water and oil repellent alternatives is crucial. In this study, chitosan and stearic acid were utilized as the first and second layers of the oil and water repellent coatings, respectively. The coated samples exhibited favorable water repellency, with a water contact angle of 116.4°, and excellent oil repellency, achieving a 12/12 rating on the kit scale. Importantly, the samples did not exhibit any leakage after being soaked in hot water and hot oil at 95±5℃ for 30 min, demonstrating remarkable performance as a barrier against hot water and oil. Moreover, the coated samples displayed outstanding mechanical properties, thermal stability, biodegradability, and recyclability. The approach presented in this study is simple, cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and represents a promising technique for producing fluoride-free, oil-and water-resistant pulp molding products.

FAM53B promotes pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma metastasis by regulating macrophage M2 polarization

BACKGROUND Our study investigated the role of FAM53B in regulating macrophage M2 polarization and its potential mechanisms in promoting pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma(PDAC)metastasis.AIM To further investigate the role of FAM53B in regulating macrophage M2 polarization and its potential mechanism in promoting PDAC metastasis.Our goal is to determine how FAM53B affects macrophage M2 polarization and to define its underlying mechanism in PDAC metastasis.METHODS Cell culture and various experiments,including protein analysis,immunohisto-chemistry,and animal model experiments,were conducted.We compared FAM53B expression between PDAC tissues and healthy tissues and assessed the correlation of FAM53B expression with clinical features.Our study analyzed the role of FAM53B in macrophage M2 polarization in vitro by examining the expression of relevant markers.Finally,we used a murine model to study the role of FAM53B in PDAC metastasis and analyzed the potential underlying mechanisms.RESULTS Our research showed that there was a significant increase in FAM53B levels in PDAC tissues,which was linked to adverse tumor features.Experimental findings indicated that FAM53B can enhance macrophage M2 polarization,leading to increased anti-inflammatory factor release.The results from the mouse model further supported the role of FAM53B in PDAC metastasis,as blocking FAM53B prevented tumor cell invasion and metastasis.CONCLUSION FAM53B promotes PDAC metastasis by regulating macrophage M2 polarization.This discovery could lead to the development of new strategies for treating PDAC.For example,interfering with the FAM53B signaling pathway may prevent cancer spread.Our research findings also provide important information for expanding our understanding of PDAC pathogenesis.

NF-κB signaling has been discovered for nearly 40 years.Initially,NF-κB signaling was identified as a pivotal pathway in mediating inflammatory responses.However,with extensive and in-depth investigations,researchers have discovered that its role can be expanded to a variety of signaling mechanisms,biological processes,human diseases,and treatment options.In this review,we first scrutinize the research process of NF-κB signaling,and summarize the composition,activation,and regulatory mechanism of NF-κB signaling.We investigate the interaction of NF-κB signaling with other important pathways,including PI3K/AKT,MAPK,JAK-STAT,TGF-β,Wnt,Notch,Hedgehog,and TLR signaling.The physiological and pathological states of NF-κB signaling,as well as its intricate involvement in inflammation,immune regulation,and tumor microenvironment,are also explicated.Additionally,we illustrate how NF-κB signaling is involved in a variety of human diseases,including cancers,inflammatory and autoimmune diseases,cardiovascular diseases,metabolic diseases,neurological diseases,and covID-19.Further,we discuss the therapeutic approaches targeting NF-κB signaling,including IKK inhibitors,monoclonal antibodies,proteasome inhibitors,nuclear translocation inhibitors,DNA binding inhibitors,TKls,non-coding RNAs,immunotherapy,and CAR-T.Finally,we provide an outlook for research in the field of NF-κB signaling.We hope to present a stereoscopic,comprehensive NF-κB signaling that will inform future research and clinical practice.

Power-efficient programmable integrated multiport photonic interferometer in CMOS-compatible silicon nitride

Silicon nitride(SiNx)is an appealing waveguide material choice for large-scale,high-performance photonic integrated circuits(PICs)due to its low optical loss.However,SiNx PICs require high electric power to realize optical reconfiguration via the weak thermo-optic effect,which limits their scalability in terms of device density and chip power dissipation.We report a 6-mode programmable interferometer PIC operating at the wavelength of 1550 nm on a CMOS-compatible low-temperature inductance coupled plasma chemical vapor deposition(ICP-CVD)silicon nitride platform.By employing suspended thermo-optic phase shifters,the PIC achieves 2×improvement in compactness and 10×enhancement in power efficiency compared to conventional devices.Reconfigurable 6-dimensional linear transformations are demonstrated including cyclic transformations and arbitrary unitary matrices.This work demonstrates the feasibility of fabricating power-efficient large-scale reconfigurable PICs on the low-temperature ICP-CVD silicon nitride platform.
