Association between benign prostatic hyperplasia, body mass index, and metabolic syndrome in Chinese men

Previous studies have showed that men suffering from diabetes mellitus, metabolic syndrome （MetS） and obesity have a higher risk of benign prostatic hyperplasia （BPH）. The present study aimed to examine the association between BPH, obesity, and features of MetS among men of the Hunan area of China. For this cross-sectional study, 904 males （aged 50-59 years） were included. MetS parameters, International Prostate Symptom Score （IPSS）, prostate-specific antigen （PSA） levels, total prostate volume （TPV）, postvoid residual volume （PVR） and maximum urine flow rate （Qmax） were measured. Results showed that MetS was associated with TPV （P = 0.048）, PVR （P = 0.004） and IPSS （P = 0.011）, but not with other indicators of BPH progression such as PSA levels or Qmax. MetS was associated with the voiding symptoms score （P〈 0.05）, but not with the storage symptom score. In addition, body mass index and fasting blood glucose positively correlated with TPV （r= 0.416, P〈 0.001; and r= 0.310, P= 0.011, respectively）. In conclusion, results suggest that MetS is associated with higher prostatic volume, prostate symptom score and voiding symptoms, but not with other features of prostatic hyperplasia such as PSA levels or Qmax. Changes in lifestyle factors, including physical activity and prevention of MetS, might be useful to prevent BPH and its progression, but further studies are needed.

Assessment of Habitat Suitability in the Upper Reaches of the Min River in China

HabRat richness influences and even determines biological diversity. Plant habitat suitability assessment can provide technical guidance and information support for ecological restoration. Thirteen factors in three categories of terrain, meteorology and soil were chosen to build a habitat suitability assessment index framework in the Upper Reaches of the Min River, based on the local natural environment and the actual influencing factors of vegetative growth. Combined with the Analytic Hierarchy Process （AHP） and entropy method, which were used to calculate weights of indexes, habitat suitability was studied by using a multi-objective linear weighting model and geographic information systems （GIS） spatial analysis techniques. The assessment results are as follows： Altitude, soil stability, aspect and slope have more important effects on plant habitat suitability in the Upper Reaches of the Min River, and their weights are o.311, 0.260, o.198 and o.125, respectively. Suitable and sub-suitable habitats cover 4431.8o km2 and 6171.12 km2, respectively; most of which are distributed along both sides of rivers and have higher suitability. Unsuitable habitats cover the largest area （6679.76 km2）, accounting for 29.83% of the whole area; and the worst unsuitable habitats are 5107.23 km2 （22.81%）; they account for more than half of the study area. These results indicate that the plant habitat in the Upper Reaches of the Min River is poor and ecological restoration is both urgent and difficult. Therefore, based on the principle of taking measures suitable to the habitat in ecological restoration projects, ecological and engineering measures should be combined to have better effects, while increasing the strength of ecological protection.

The design, synthesis and biological evaluation of a novel series of arylpiperazine derivatives of diphenylsulfide with dual 5- HT1A/SSRI activities are reported. The target compounds exhibit low to moderate 5-HT transporter affinity and moderate to high 5- HT1A affinity, Compound 13a shows moderate dual activities and is a promising lead compound for further structure-activity relationships studies.

A lab-in-a-tube microarray system is developed for sample inspection and signal detection by fabricating a flat transparent window cap of the Eppendorf tube. The oli- gonucleotide microarray is immobilized on the inner surface of the cap. A small vessel is placed in an Eppendorf tube for storing hybridization solutions. With the microarray system, the full biochemical processes, including gene fragment am- plification, fluorescence labeling, hybridization, and fluores- cence detection, have been performed in the sealed tube without opening the cap. The images are obtained from a fluorescence microscope and captured by a CCD, and the data are transported to a computer through the universal serial bus (USB). After noise reduction, signal intensity is deter- mined from hybridization image and the presence of gene fragments is identified. The final data output includes sample information, process steps, and hybridization results. A lab-in- a-tube microarray system for detecting ten respiratory vi- ruses at a single detection is designed. High detection throug- hput and accuracy have been demonstrated with the system.

Barley(Hordeum vulgare L.)is one of the earliest domesticated crop species and ranked as the fourth largest cereal production *** genetic studies in barley have greatly advanced plant genetics during the last century;however,most genes are identified by the conventional mapping *** genotyping and exome-capture sequencing have also been successfully used to target the causal mutation in barley populations,but these techniques are not widely adopted because of associated costs and partly due to the huge genome size of *** review summarizes three mapping cases of barley cuticle mutants in our laboratory with the help of *** causal mutations have been successfully identified for two of them and the target genes are located in the pericentromeric *** information on the mapping-by-sequencing,mapping-and-sequencing,and RNA-sequencing assisted linkage mapping are presented and some limitations and challenges on the mapping assisted by RNA sequencing are also *** alternative and elegant methods presented in this review may greatly accelerate forward genetics of barley mapping,especially for laboratories without large funding.

Although it is widely accepted that human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes(hiPSC-CMs)are readily available,robustly reproducible,and physiologically appropriate human cells for clinical applications and research in the cardiovascular field,hiPSC-CMs cultured in vitro retain an immature metabolic phenotype that limits their application,and little is known about the underlying molecular mechanism controlling mitochondrial metabolic maturation during human induced pluripotent stem cells(hiPSCs)differentiation into *** this study,we found that peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor g coactivator-1α(PGC-1α)played an important role in inducing mitochondrial biogenesis and establishing oxidative phosphorylation(OXPHOS)during the cardiac differentiation of *** down PGC-1α by siRNA impaired mitochondrial respiration,while upregulating PGC-1α by ZLN005 promoted mitochondrial biosynthesis and function by regulating the expression of downstream genes involved in mitochondrial dynamics and oxidative metabolism in ***,we found that estrogen-related receptor a(ERRa)was required for the induction of PGC-1α stimulatory effects in *** findings provide key insights into the molecular control of mitochondrial metabolism during cardiac differentiation and may be used to generate more metabolically mature cardiomyocytes for application.
