Antioxidant and antiarthritic potential of berberine: In vitro and in vivo studies

Objective: To extract and isolate berberine from Berberis aristata(Berberidaceae). Isolated berberine was characterised using spectroscopy and its antioxidant and antiarthritic activity was ***: The berberine was isolated from B. aristata using microwave-assisted extraction(MAE) and characterised by a spectroscopic technique. The isolated berberine was evaluated for its antioxidant activity in DPPH, nitric oxide, and superoxide scavenging assays, while antiarthritic activity was evaluated in the complete freund’s adjuvant(CFA)-induced arthritis rat ***: The antioxidant activity of berberine revealed potent antioxidant activity in DPPH, nitric oxide,and superoxide scavenging assays. The in vivo antiarthritic activity of berberine in the CFA-induced arthritis rat model showed a significant reduction in paw diameter, arthritic score, and an increase in body weight. Furthermore, a concentration-dependent ameliorating action of berberine on haematological parameters was noticed. Proinfammatory biomarkers, including IL-6, IL-10, and TGF-b in serum were reported, and histopathology examination revealed that berberine decreased pannus formation, synovial hyperplasia, and bone erosion. Radiographic investigation showed soft tissue infammation, bone resorption and erosion, joint gap reduction, and substantial connective tissue expansion after treatment with ***: The ameliorating action on haematological parameters and proinfammatory biomarkers of berberine makes them a suitable remedy for the treatment of arthritis.

An Approach Using Fuzzy Sets and Boosting Techniques to Predict Liver Disease

The aim of this research is to develop a mechanism to help medical practitioners predict and diagnose liver *** systems have been proposed to help medical experts by diminishing error and increasing accuracy in diagnosing and predicting *** many existing methods,a few have considered the class imbalance issues of liver disorder *** all the samples of liver disorder datasets are not useful,they do not contribute to learning about classifiers.A few samples might be redundant,which can increase the computational cost and affect the performance of the *** this paper,a model has been proposed that combines noise filter,fuzzy sets,and boosting techniques(NFFBTs)for liver disease ***,the noise filter(NF)eliminates the outliers from the minority class and removes the outlier and redundant pair from the majority ***,the fuzzy set concept is applied to handle uncertainty in ***,the AdaBoost boosting algorithm is trained with several learners viz,random forest(RF),support vector machine(SVM),logistic regression(LR),and naive Bayes(NB).The proposed NFFBT prediction system was applied to two datasets(i.e.,ILPD and MPRLPD)and found that AdaBoost with RF yielded 90.65%and 98.95%accuracy and F1 scores of 92.09%and 99.24%over ILPD and MPRLPD datasets,respectively.

Rainforests north of the Tropic of Cancer: Physiognomy, floristics and diversity in ‘lowland rainforests’ of Meghalaya, India

The lowland rainforests of Meghalaya, India represent the westernmost limit of the rainforests north of the Tropic of Cancer. These forests, on the Shillong plateau, are akin to Whitmore's ‘tropical lowland evergreen rainforest' formation and exhibit striking similarities and conspicuous differences with the equatorial rainforests in Asia-Pacific as well as tropical seasonal rainforests in southwestern China near the Tropic of Cancer. We found these common attributes of the rainforests in Meghalaya: familial composition with predominance of Euphorbiaceae, Lauraceae, Meliaceae, Moraceae, Myrsiticaceae,Myrtaceae and Rubiaceae; deciduousness in evergreen physiognomy; dominance of mega-and mesophanerophytic life-forms; abundance of species with low frequency of occurrence(rare and aggregated species); low proportional abundance of the abundant species; and truncated lognormal abundance distribution. The levels of stand density and stand basal area were comparable with seasonal rainforests in southwestern China, but were lower than equatorial rainforests. Tropical Asian species predominated flora, commanding 95% of the abundance. The differences include overall low stature(height) of the forest, inconspicuous stratification in canopy, fewer species and individuals of liana, thicker understory,higher proportion of rare species, absence of locally endemic species and relatively greater dominance of Fagaceae and Theaceae. The richness of species per hectare(S) was considerably lower at higher latitudes in Meghalaya than in equatorial rainforests, but was comparable with seasonal rainforests. Shannon's diversity index(H’=4.40 nats for ≥10 cm gbh and 4.25 nats for ≥30 cm gbh) was lower on higher latitudes in Meghalaya in comparison to species-rich equatorial rainforests, but it was the highest among all lowland rainforests near the Tropic of Cancer.

A high-capacity viologen-based anolyte for high energy density neutral pH aqueous redox-flow batteries

Redox-ﬂow batteries(RFBs)are a promising energy storage technology with remarkable scalability and safety for storing vast amounts of renewable energy and mitigating outputﬂuctuations of renewable power *** demonstrate a neutral pH aqueous RFB using a custom-designed 1’,1’’’,1’’’’’-(benzene-1,3,5-triyltris(methylene))tris(1-(3-(trimethyl ammonio)propyl)-[4’’,4’’’-bipyridine]-1,1’-diium)nonachloride(BTTMPB)as a 3 e-storage *** custom design with the high polarization in charge density has led to the excellent water solubility of 4.0 M in H_(2)O(321.6 A h L^(-1))and 2.4 M in 2.0 M NaCl(192.9 A h L^(-1)).The density functional theory(DFT)calculations and electrochemical experiments have shown 3 e-storage response of BTTMPB with a diffusion coefﬁcient of 3.1×10^(-6)cm^(2) s^(-1)and rate con-stant of 1.6×10^(-2)cm s^(-1) for theﬁrst reduction *** synthesized anolyte was paired with(Ferrocenylmethyl)trimethylammonium chloride(FcNCl)as catholyte enabling a 0.92 V aqueous RFB with 125.9 W h L^(-1)theoretical energy *** aqueous RFB has an excellent cycling performance from 10-30 m A cm^(-2),energy efﬁciency up to 80%,capacity retention of 99.96%per cycle at 20 m A cm^(-2),and a high demonstrated energy density of 29.1 W h L^(-1).

In this paper,we study two fractional models in the Caputo–Fabrizio sense and Atangana–Baleanu sense,in which the effects of malaria infection on mosquito biting behavior and attractiveness of humans are *** Lyapunov theory,we prove the global asymptotic stability of the unique endemic equilibrium of the integer-order model,and the fractional models,whenever the basic reproduction number R0 is greater than *** using fixed point theory,we prove existence,and conditions of the uniqueness of solutions,as well as the stability and convergence of numerical *** simulations for both models,using fractional Euler method and Adams–Bashforth method,respectively,are provided to confirm the effectiveness of used approximation methods for different values of the fractional-orderγ.

In this work,we use a Predictor–Corrector method to implement and derive an iterative solution of an existing Tuberculosis(TB)model with two fractional derivatives,namely,Caputo–Fabrizio fractional derivative and the new generalized Caputo fractional deriva*** begin by recalling some existing results such as the basic reproduction number R0 and the equilibrium points of the ***,we study the global asymptotic stability of disease-free equilibrium of the fractional *** also prove,for each fractional model,the existence and uniqueness of *** iterative solution of the two models is computed using the Predictor–Corrector *** realistic parameter values,we perform numerical simulations for different values of the fractional *** results permit to conclude that the new generalized Caputo fractional derivative provides a more realistic analysis than the Caputo–Fabrizio fractional derivative and the classical integer-order TB model.

New atypical pneumonia caused by a virus called Coronavirus(COVID-19)appeared in Wuhan,China in December *** previous epidemics due to the severe acute respiratory syndrome(SARS)and the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus(MERS-CoV),COVID-19 has the particularity that it is more contagious than the other previous *** this paper,we try to predict the COVID-19 epidemic peak in Japan with the help of real-time data from January 15 to February 29,2020 with the uses of fractional derivatives,namely,Caputo derivatives,the Caputo–Fabrizio derivatives,and Atangana–Baleanu derivatives in the Caputo *** fixed point theory and Picard–Lindel of approach used in this study provide the proof for the existence and uniqueness analysis of the solutions to the noninteger-order models under the *** each fractional model,we propose a numerical scheme as well as prove its *** parameter values estimated from the Japan COVID-19 epidemic real data,we perform numerical simulations to confirm the effectiveness of used approxima-tion methods by numerical simulations for different values of the fractional-orderγ,and to give the predictions of COVID-19 epidemic peaks in Japan in a specific range of time intervals.

In this article,we introduce a nonlinear Caputo-type snakebite envenoming model with *** well-known Caputo fractional derivative is used to generalize the previously presented integer-order model into a fractionalorder *** numerical solution of the model is derived from a novel implementation of a finite-difference predictor-corrector(L1-PC)scheme with error estimation and stability *** proof of the existence and positivity of the solution is given by using the fixed point *** the necessary simulations,we justify that the first-time implementation of the proposedmethod on an epidemicmodel shows that the scheme is fully suitable and time-efficient for solving epidemic *** work aims to show the novel application of the given scheme as well as to check how the proposed snakebite envenoming model behaves in the presence of the Caputo fractional derivative,including memory effects.

Analysis of silicon-based integrated photovoltaic–electrochemical hydrogen generation system under varying temperature and illumination

Last decade witnessed tremendous research and development in the area of photo-electrolytic hydrogen generation using chemically stable nanostructured photo-cathode/anode materials. Due to intimately coupled charge separation and photo-catalytic processes, it is very difficult to optimize individual components of such system leading to a very low demonstrated solar-to-fuel efficiency (SFE) of less than 1%. Recently there has been growing interest in an integrated photovoltaic–electrochemical (PV–EC) system based on GaAs solar cells with the demonstrated SFE of 24.5% under concentrated illumination condition. But a high cost of GaAs based solar cells and recent price drop of poly-crystalline silicon (pc-Si) solar cells motivated researchers to explore silicon based integrated PV–EC system. In this paper a theoretical framework is introduced to model silicon-based integrated PV–EC device. The theoretical framework is used to analyze the coupling and kinetic losses of a silicon solar cell based integrated PV–EC water splitting system under varying temperature and illumination. The kinetic loss occurs in the range of 19.1%–27.9% and coupling loss takes place in the range of 5.45%–6.74% with respect to varying illumination in the range of 20–100 mW/cm2. Similarly, the effect of varying temperature has severe impact on the performance of the system, wherein the coupling loss occurs in the range of 0.84%–21.51% for the temperature variation from 25 to 50 °C. © 2016 Science Press
