BACKGROUnD Oxidative damage of DnA and RnA has been associated with mortality of patients with different ***,there is no published data on the potential use of DnA and RnA oxidative damage to predict the prognosis of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)undergoing liver transplantation(LT).AIM To determine whether patients with increased DnA and RnA oxidative damage prior to LT for HCC have a poor LT *** Patients with HCC who underwent LT were included in this observational and retrospective *** levels of all three oxidized guanine species(OGS)were measured prior to LT since guanine is the nucleobase that forms DnA and RnA most prone to *** mortality at 1 year was the end-point *** Surviving patients(n=101)showed lower serum OGS levels(P=0.01)and lower age of the liver donor(P=0.03)than non-surviving patients(n=13).An association between serum OGS levels prior to LT and 1-year LT(odds ratio=2.079;95%confidence interval=1.356-3.189;P=0.001)was found in the logistic regression *** The main new finding was that high serum OGS concentration prior to LT was associated with the mortality 1 year after LT in HCC patients.

Microstructural and photocatalytic characterization of cement-paste sol-gel synthesized titanium dioxide

ABSTRACT A routte for the in paste synthesis of TiO2 loaded cement is described. TiO2 sols are blended with fresh cement paste as an alternative process to add photocatalytic functionality to cement. The modification of cement paste structure after the addition ofTiO2 sols is analyzed by XRD, SEM and TGA. As a particular microstructural feature, TiO2 containing calcium silicate hydrate （C-H-S） particles are identified as networking centers ofa C-S-H gel fiber matrix. The increase of the TiO2 sol concentration induces a decrease of pore size and an increase in the specific surface area in the cement composites. The photocatalytic activity of the TiO2/cement system is evaluated from the degradation of Methylene Blue （MB） under UV irradiation, monitored through the absorbance at 665 nm. The results show that, although TiO2 phases reveal no long range order structure, the cement paste exothermal treatment in presence of hydrate products and alkaline conditions leads to a photocatalytic composite. Such new cement matrix may be twofold advantageous since it additionally promotes the formation of C-S-H gel, main determinant of cement mechanical properties.

External beam radiotherapy(EBRT) is one of the principal curative treatments for patients with prostate cancer(PCa). Risk group classification is based on prostate-specific antigen(PSA) level, Gleason score, and T-stage. After risk group determination, the treatment volume and dose are defined and androgen deprivation therapy is prescribed, if appropriate. Traditionally, imaging has played only a minor role in T-staging due to the low diagnostic accuracy of conventional imaging strategies such as transrectal ultrasound, computed tomography, and morphologic magnetic resonance imaging(MRI). As a result, a notable percentage of tumours are understaged, leading to inappropriate and imprecise EBRT. The development of multiparametric MRI(mp MRI), an imaging technique that combines morphologic studies with functional diffusion-weighted sequences and dynamic contrastenhanced imaging, has revolutionized the diagnosis and management of PCa. As a result, mpM RI is now used in staging PCa prior to EBRT, with possible implications for both risk group classification and treatment decisionmaking for EBRT. mpM RI is also being used in salvageradiotherapy(SRT), the treatment of choice for patients who develop biochemical recurrence after radical prostatectomy. In the clinical context of biochemical relapse, it is essential to accurately determine the site of recurrence-pelvic(local, nodal, or bone) or distant-in order to select the optimal therapeutic management approach. Studies have demonstrated the value of mpM RI in detecting local recurrences-even in patients with low PSA levels(0.3-0.5 ng/m L)-and in diagnosing bone and nodal metastasis. The main objective of this review is to update the role of mpM RI prior to radical EBRT or SRT. We also consider future directions for the use and development of MRI in the field of radiation oncology.

This work is focused on the determination of the optimal reaction conditions to synthesize the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride([EMIM][Cl]) and assess its suitability for the pretreatment of rice husk. The modified UnIFAC(UnIversal quasi-chemical Functional-group Activity Coefficients)approach for ionic liquids is used to develop a thermodynamic model that describes the reactive system methylimidazole(MIM), chloroethane(C_(2)H_(5)Cl) and [EMIM][Cl]. The model allows to study the phase equilibria coexistence(vapor–liquid equilibria and solid–liquid equilibria) and yields the theoretically optimal conditions to synthesize the ionic liquid. The model predictions are validated with the available experimental and reported data. By implementing the developed model, a simple way to synthesize ionic liquid [EMIM][Cl] was found allowing to study its influence on the structure and morphology of pretreated rice husk. The lignocellulosic materials involved in this study are characterized by their composition, enzymatic digestibility, scanning electron microscopy, and crystallinity. Compared to untreated material, [EMIM][Cl]-pretreated rice husk produces cellulose that can be efficiently enzymatic hydrolyzed with high sugar yields. This work offers a suitable methodology to include the synthesis and thermodynamics of the solvent media within the design of low-cost ionic liquids for lignocellulosic biomass pretreatment.

Segmental arterial mediolysis, reparative phase: An analysis and case report showing conversion to fibromuscular dysplasia with renal infarction

Segmental arterial mediolysis (SAM), an uncommon arteriopathy putatively caused by norepinephrine released by alpha-1 adrenergic agonists or some Beta-2 agonists capable of releasing norepinephrine from the peripheral sympathetic nervous system potentially can present ischemic and organ injury symptoms caused by sequelae created in its reparative phase in lieu of catastrophic hemorrhages announced in its injurious phase. The case documents this presentation—the patient presenting renal infarcts and ischemic lesions causing abdominal angina, hypertension and a nephrectomy event developing 10 years after prolonged ritodrine treatment for premature labor. This agent may have directly caused SAM or sensitized the patient to agonists causing SAM encountered at a latter date. A variety of lesions derived from injurious phase arterial injuries characterize reparative phase SAM. All were encountered in a hilar branch of the resected renal artery. These included side-by-side sequela aneurysms grossly forming a large fusiform aneurysm, granulation tissue filling adventitial medial tear spaces in which a dissecting hematomas developed, medial muscle loss centered to the outer media repaired with fibrous tissue, arterial stenosis created by reparative intimal plaques, and arterial thrombo-embolism. These lesions were mirrored in accompanying radiologic studies. The accompanying renal vein exhibited changes consistent with repair of the spastic venous angiopathy that often accompanies abdominal SAM. This angiopathy, putatively induced by Endothelin-1, suggested that this agent played a role in the genesis of the arterial lesions. Angiographic resolution of non-treated sequelae occurred in 5 months either spontaneously or due to treatment with bosentem. Conclusions: The histologic and angiographic changes demonstrate that the clinical onset of reparative SAM may be significantly delayed to produce ischemic lesions, renal infarction and in this case report, medial fibromuscular dy
