Physico-chemical and elemental investigation of aqueous leaching of high sulfur coal and mine overburden from Ledo coalfield of Northeast India

Acid mine drainage （AMD） is one of the major problems in high sulfur coal mining areas generating acidic water. The acidic mine water generated contain hazardous elements in varying concentrations. The Northeastern Indian coalfield produces considerable amounts of AMD. The AMD and metal leaching from coal and mine over burden （OB） are the two important naturally occurring processes. In order to know the AMD potential, the aqueous leaching experiment of a few coal and OB samples from the Ledo colliery of the Northeastern coalfield, Mergherita （India）, at different time periods （1, 3, 5, and 8 h） and at different temperatures （25, 45, 65, and 90℃） were performed in the laboratory. The physico- chemical analysis of the aqueous leachates shows the pH, electrical conductivity （EC）, and total dissolved solid （TDS） in the range of 1.62-3.52, 106-2006 μs/cm, and 106-1003 ppm for the raw coal samples respectively. The OB samples produced pH, EC, and TDS in the range of 3.68-6.92, 48.6-480 μs/cm, and 69.5-240 ppm respectively. From the study, it was revealed that the concentrations of major （Si, A1, K, Na, Fe, Ca, Mg）, minor （Mn） and trace/hazardous elements （As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, Se, Zn） considerably change with leaching time as well as with leaching temperature. Out of these elements As, Cd, Hg, Pb, Cr, and Se are of greater environmental importance. Alteration of the physico-chemical structure of the coal and OB samples resulting from leaching was also studied by field emission scanning electron microscope- energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy method. The release of the potentially hazardous elements from the raw coal and OB during leaching time periods to the leachates was detected by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy and ion-chromatographic analyses. In this study,four biochars prepared from different crop residue waste *** bagasse(SBB),coconut shell(CNB),paddy straw(PDB),and distilled waste of lemongrass(LGB)were evaluated for removal of Remazol Brilliant Blue R from the aqueous *** RBBR adsorption capacities of biochar were 97-79%for SBB,99.9-99.47%for CNB,66.1-48%for PDB,and 78-68%for LGB,dominantly controlled by their aromaticity and mineral *** Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms and pseudo-second-order kinetic models have described the chemisorption of RBBR on biochar *** thermodynamic data suggested that adsorption was spontaneous and *** biochars demonstrated excellent reusability(till four cycles with 50-61%regeneration).The purified water and biochar dye sludge demonstrated no *** findings obtained in this study may provide supports for the potential of biochars for anionic dye removal from water and utilization of generated sludge for zero waste-producing technologies in the future.

Spectroscopic, Kinetic Studies of Polyaniline-Flyash Composite

Polyaniline-fly ash (PANI-FA) composites were prepared by oxidative polymerization of aniline with fly ash in presence of ammonium persulphate (APS). The PANI-FA composites were prepared with different concentrations of fly ash to aniline ratio. The composites, so prepared, were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The thermal stability was studied by TGA and total weight loss of PANI, FA and PANI-FA composites having FA composition of 0.02%, 0.1%, 0.5% and 1.0% were found to be 82%, 39.%, 67% 65%, 62% and 61%, respectively. The UV-vis spectroscopy of the PANI-FA polymeric composite shows absorption maxima at 315 and 350 nm (due to π-π* transition of the benzenoid rings), and 578-712 nm (due to charge transfer excitations of the quinoid structure), which are characteristic of emeraldine base. FTIR spectra of the PANI-FA composite is similar to that of pure polyaniline (PANI) but with the bands for C=N, C=C and C-N shifted to lower wave numbers, i.e., 1585, 1494, 1327 and 1113 cm?1 due to strong interaction of Fe2O3 and PANI matrix. SEM shows the complexation of metal oxide with emaraldine base of PANI, significantly changing the aggregate state of polymeric molecular chain.

Pathology of alcoholic liver disease, can it be differentiated from nonalcoholic steatohepatitis?

The liver involvement in alcoholic liver disease(ALD) classically ranges from alcoholic steatosis, alcoholic hepatitis or steatohepatitis, alcoholic cirrhosis and even hepatocellular carcinoma. The more commonly seen histologic features include macrovesicular steatosis, neutrophilic lobular inflammation, ballooning degeneration, Mallory-Denk bodies, portal and pericellular fibrosis. Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH) is a condition with similar histology in the absence of a history of alcohol intake. Although the distinction is essentially based on presence or absence of a history of significant alcohol intake, certain histologic features favour one or the other diagnosis. This review aims at describing the histologic spectrum of alcoholic liver disease and at highlighting the histologic differences between ALD and NASH.

Toward molecular models of proton pumping:Challenges,methods and relevant applications

Motivated by several long-lasting mechanistic questions for biomolecular proton pumps,we have engaged in developing hybrid quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical(QM/MM) methods that allow an efficient and reliable description of long-range proton transport in transmembrane *** this review,we briefly discuss several relevant issues:the need to develop a "multi-scale" generalized solvent boundary potential(GSBP) for the analysis of chemical events in large trans-membrane proteins,approaches to validate such a protocol,and the importance of improving the flexibility of QM/MM *** recent studies of model and realistic protein systems are also discussed to help put the discussions into ***,these studies suggest that the QM/MM-GSBP framework based on an approximate density functional theory(SCC-DFTB) as QM holds the promise to strike the proper balance between computational efficiency,accuracy and *** additional improvements in the methodology and recent developments by others,especially powerful sampling techniques,this "multi-scale" framework will be able to help unlock the secrets of proton pumps and other biomolecular machines.

Xanthogranulomatous cholecystitis:a premalignant condition?

BACKGROUND:Xanthogranulomatous cholecystitis(XGC)is an uncommon variant of chronic cholecystitis,characterized by marked thickening of the gallbladder wall and dense local *** often mimics a gallbladder carcinoma(GBC), and may coexist with GBC,leading to a diagnostic dilemma. Furthermore,the premalignant nature of this entity is not *** study was undertaken to assess the p53,PCNA and beta-catenin expression in XGC in comparison to GBC and chronic inflammation. METHODS:Sections from paraffin-embedded blocks of surgically resected specimens of GBC(69 cases),XGC(65), chronic cholecystitis(18)and control gallbladder(10)were stained with the monoclonal antibodies to p53 and PCNA, and a polyclonal antibody to beta-catenin.p53 expression was scored as the percentage of nuclei *** expression was scored as the product of the percentage of nuclei stained and the intensity of the staining(1-3).A cut-off value of 80 for this score was taken as a positive result. Beta-catenin expression was scored as type of expression-membranous,cytoplasmic or nuclear staining. RESULTS:p53 mutation was positive in 52%of GBC cases and 3%of XGC,but was not expressed in chronic cholecystitis and control gallbladders.p53 expression was lower in XGC than in GBC(P<0.0001).PCNA expression was seen in 65%of GBC cases and 11%of XGC,but not in chronic cholecystitis and control *** expression was higher in GBC than XGC(P=0.0001),but there was no significant difference between the XGC,chronic cholecystitis and control gallbladder ***-catenin expression was positive in the GBC,XGC, chronic cholecystitis and control gallbladder *** the expression pattern in XGC,chronic cholecystitis and control gallbladders was homogenously membranous,whereas in GBC the membranous expression pattern was altered to cytoplasmic and ***:The expression of p53,PCNA and beta-catenin in XGC was significantly different from GBC and similar to chronic cholecystitis,

This work examines the physiologic basis of stress tolerance in bacterial strains of the genus Rhodanobacter that dominate in the acidic and highly metal contaminated near-source subsurface zone of the Oak Ridge Integrated Field Research Challenge(ORIFRC)*** of *** to levels of different stresses were studied in synthetic groundwater medium and R2A *** strains of ***,strains 2APBS1T and 116-2,tolerate low to circumneutral pH(4–8),high Uranium(1 mmol/L),elevated levels of nitrate(400 mmol/L)and high NaCl(2.5%).A combination of physiologic traits,such as growth at low pH,increased growth in the presence of high organics concentration,and tolerance of high concentrations of nitrate,NaCl and heavy metals is likely responsible for dominance of Rhodanobacter at the ORIFRC ***,extended incubation times and use of low carbon media,better approximating site groundwater conditions,are critical for accurate determination of stress *** study expands knowledge of the ecophysiology of bacteria from the genus Rhodanobacter and identifies methodological approaches necessary for acquiring accurate tolerance data.
