A new alkali metallo-organic single crystal of Lithium sodium Acid Phthlate (LiNaP) complex has been synthesized from aqueous solution in the equimolar ratio 3:1:2. Transparent and bulk single crystals of dimension 9 × 4 ×2 mm3 have been grown from the conventional slow-cooling technique. The crystal structure of the compound has been solved from single crystal X-ray diffraction. The compound 2[C8H4O3]4-Li3+Na+ crystallizes in triclinic system with a space group of Pī having cell dimensions a = 7.5451(2) ? b = 9.8422(3) ? c = 25.2209(7) ? α = 80.299(2);β = 89.204(2);γ = 82.7770(10). FTIr measurement was carried out fo? LiNaP to study the vibrational structure of the compound. The various functional groups present in the molecule and the role of H-bonds in stabilizing the crystal structure of the compound have been explained. Optical absorption properties were studied for the grown crystal using UV-Vis-NIr spectrum. Thermal measurements were carried out for LiNaP to determine the thermal strength as well as to ascertain the hydrated nature of the crystal. Third order nonliner optical studies have also studied by Z-scan techniques. Nonlinear absorption and nonlinear refractive index were found out and the third order bulk susceptibility of compound was also estimated. The results of all studies have been discussed in detail.

Comparative Proteomics Analysis of Exhaled Breath Condensate in Lung Cancer Patients

The prognosis for patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NsCLC) remains poor in spite of better treatments. This relates mainly to the fact that the majority of patients present with advanced disease. There is a need to identify tools which can improve screening for lung cancer in the at risk patient population. The aim of this study was to compare the breath proteomic profile of NsCLC patients with healthy control subjects to explore the potential of new biomarkers of lung cancer. Comparative proteomic analysis of exhaled breath condensate (EBC) between 14 patients with NsCLC and 13 healthy control subjects were carried out using LTQ FT Ultra mass spectrometry and database searching to determine any unique proteins. In total, 29 unique proteins were identified using multiple protein identification algorithms. A comparison of lung cancer, smoker, and ex-smoker proteomes showed that 18 proteins were shared among the three groups. While one unique protein was found in smokers and lung cancer patients, four proteins were unique to ex-smokers. This data set provides a foundation for evaluation of these proteins from EBC as potential biomarkers for non-invasive lung cancer diagnosis.

Background: Cardiac complications after myocardial infarction are believed to be worse in the presence of comorbidities;we tested whether experimentally induced prolonged uremia exacer-bated myocardial necrosis in a rabbit preparation of ischemia-reperfusion injury. In addition, we examined if treatment with an angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor (Enalapril, ENA, 3 mg/Kg, IV) could reduce post-ischemic myocardial damage. Methods: Prolonged uremia was induced by a two-stage subtotal nephrectomy and confirmed by marked increases in serum creatinine and urea levels;after 5 weeks, four groups of rabbits were exposed to 45-min acute coronary occlusion followed by 180-min reperfusion. In treated animals, ENA was administered 5-min before onset of coronary reperfusion. All data from uremic animals were compared with time-matched controls. results: Cardiac hemodynamics was similar for all groups during the development of kidney failure;heart rate in uremic rabbits was significantly lower for the duration of ischemia-reperfusion. In this animal model, the absence of coronary collateral circulation provides a stable ischemic substrate for evaluation of cellular necrosis. Infarct size (expressed as percent risk zone size) was: control, 48 ± 16;uremia, 36 ± 5;control + ENA, 51 ± 19;and uremia + ENA, 41 ± 16;risk zone size was similar for all animals. Conclusion: The present findings are inconsistent with the view that post-ischemic cardiac injury is greater in animals with pre-existent uremia. In addition, we were unable to show a significant beneficial effect with an angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor on infarct size in either control or uremic rabbits. It remains to be proven in animal models with comorbidities such as manifest kidney disease that ischemic tolerance can be substantially reduced by either pharmacologic or non-pharmacologic interventions.

Metastatic pancreatic cancer carries an estimated five-year survival rate of only 2%. Gemcitabine-based chemotherapy remains a first-line standard-of-care treatment for elderly patients with advanced pancreatic cancer. Combination chemotherapy FOLFIrINOX offers better results, but it is not recommended for the older patient population due to substantial toxicity. standard-of-care second-line treatment is not yet established and is used in approximately 30% of patients since performance status is too low to consider further therapy. Targeted therapies with a single agent and in combinations have been tested in numerous clinical trials, but except for the combination of gemcitabine and erlotinib, have not yet proven efficacy. Here, we present preliminary findings of improved overall survival (Os) using a combination of sodium phenylbutyrate with various chemotherapeutic and targeted agents in stage IV A and B pancreatic cancer patients who failed at least one line of chemotherapy. The results suggest a strategy of simultaneous interruption of signal transmission involving multiple pathways in the second-line treatment that are believed to interfere with cell cycle, cancer cell metabolism, autophagy and maintenance of cancer stem cells and promote apoptosis. In this group of patients, median Os was higher compared to other second-line therapies (10.5 months compared to between 2.9 and 6.5 months in other studies, and in the best supportive care group, 2.3 months). Given the understanding that our findings are preliminary, we propose the validation of our initial results using a well-designed Phase I/II trial in recurrent advanced pancreatic cancer.

Optimizing the low-pressure carburizing process of 16Cr3NiWMoVNbE gear steel

Compared with the traditional atm ospheric carburization, low-pressure carburization has the benefits of producing no surface oxidation and leaving fine, uniformly dispersed carbides in the carburized layer. However, the process param eters for low-pressure carburization of 16Cr3NiWMoVNbE steel have yet to be optimized. Thus, we use the saturation-value method to optimize these parameters for aviation-gear materials. Toward this end, the m icrostructure and properties of 16Cr3NiWMoVNbE steel after different carburization processes are studied by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transm ission electron microscopy, and electron probe microanalysis. Considering the saturated austenite carbon concentration, we propose a model of carbon flux and an alloy coefficient for low -pressure carburization to reduce the carbon concentration in austenite and avoid the surface carbide network. At the early stage of carburization (30 s), the gas-solid interface has a higher concentration gradient. The averaging method is not ideal in practical applications, but the carbon flux measured by using the segm ented average m ethod is 2.5 times that measured by the overall average method, which is ideal in practical applications. The corresponding carburization tim e is reduced by 60%. By using the integral average method, the actual carburization time increases, which leads to the rapid form ation of carbide on the surface and affects the entire carburization process. Nb and Wcombine with C to form carbides, which hinders carbon diffusion and consumes carbon, resulting in a sharp decrease in the rate of C diffusion in austenite (the diffusion rate is reduced by 52% for 16Cr3NiWMoVNbE steel). By changing the diffusion coefficient model and comparing the hardness gradient of different processes, the depth of the actual layer is found to be very similar to the design depth.
