目的:比较无症状肾癌与有症状肾癌的临床特征、诊断方法及治疗方式。方法:回顾性分析我院2006年至2012年246例住院肾癌患者的临床资料,分为无症状肾癌组(n=140)和有症状肾癌组(n=106),按年龄、性别、肿瘤侧别、肿瘤大小、病理类型、临床分期及手术方式、手术范围统计各组病例数。结果:无症状肾癌患者大多通过B超首先发现肾脏占位。无症状肾癌与有症状肾癌相比较,患者性别、肿瘤侧别和病理类型差异无统计学意义(p>0.05)。2组的发病年龄、肿瘤大小、肿瘤分期、手术方式及手术范围差异有统计学意义(p<0.05)。结论:B超利于无症状肾癌的筛查。无症状肾癌组行保留肾单位手术者多于有症状组,有利于提高术后生活质量及长期生存率。

dear Editor, Herbal medicines have been used for prevention and treatment of human diseases and promotion of healthy living. These medicines, often self medicated and consumed as concentrated extracts, are not strictly regulated. Considering their popular use and increasing safety concerns, thorough evaluations of their efficacy and safety are warranted to protect consumers from potential adverse effects. Toxicity tests （acute, sub- acute and chronic） using animals are widely applied to evaulate adverse effects of a drug and thereby determine its ＂No Observed Adverse Effect Level＂（NOAEL）.

We have studied the genotoxic and apoptotic potential of ferric oxide nanoparticles（Fe_2O_3-Nps） in Raphanus sativus（radish）.Fe_2O_3-Nps retarded the root length and seed germination in *** sections of treated roots showed subcellular localization of Fe_2O_3-Nps,along with the appearance of damaged mitochondria and excessive *** cytometric analysis of Fe_2O_3-Nps（1.0 mg/m L） treated groups exhibited 219.5%,161%,120.4% and 161.4% increase in intracellular reactive oxygen species（ROS）,mitochondrial membrane potential（ΔΨm）,nitric oxide（NO） and Ca2＋influx in radish protoplasts.A concentration dependent increase in the antioxidative enzymes glutathione（GSH）,catalase（CAT）,superoxide dismutase（SOd） and lipid peroxidation（LpO） has been *** assay showed a concentration dependent increase in deoxyribonucleic acid（dNA） strand breaks in Fe_2O_3-Nps treated *** cycle analysis revealed 88.4% of cells in sub-G1 apoptotic phase,suggesting cell death in Fe_2O_3-Nps（2.0 mg/m L） treated *** together,the genotoxicity induced by Fe_2O_3-Nps highlights the importance of environmental risk associated with improper disposal of nanoparticles（Nps） and radish can serve as a good indicator for measuring the phytotoxicity of Nps grown in Np-polluted environment.

Impact of nutritional support on nutritional status and nitrogen balance in surgical patients of a developing country

To assess the nutritional status, its change after surgery and impact of nutritional support on urinary nitrogen losses (UNL) and nitrogen balance (NB) based on changing serum albumin levels in a developing country, 89 patient (58 M) aged 39 yrs ±15 were studied. Nutritional assessment was done at admission and 2 weeks postoperatively. UNL and NB was assessed on postoperative day one (d1), two (d2), four (d4), six (d6), eight (d8) and eleven (d11) respectively. Malnutrition varied from 27 (30.3%) using body mass index to 78 (87%) by triceps skin fold thickness. patients with falling or static serum albumin levels (Group I) showed a significant decrease (‘p’ = 0.001) in their nutritional parameters compared to those with increasing albumin (Group II). postoperatively till d2 both groups had similar negative NB but Group II improved earlier to become positively balanced by d11 (‘p’ day revealed negative association till d2 to become positively associated from d4 onwards being significant on d4 (‘p’ = 0.001) & d6 (‘p’ = 0.05*). There is a significant nutritional depletion after surgery especially in patients with falling/static serum albumin levels and NB improves earlier in patients with rising albumin levels. Increasing Ni helps in decreasing UNL.
