Agricultural areas.of land are deteriorating every day owing to population increas., rapid urbanization, and indus.rialization. Aim: We report a cas. of fungal k.ratitis.and Ocular s.rface s.ualous.Neoplas.a (Os.N) occurring in a HIV pos.tive patient. Method: A 32-year-old female patient pres.nted with a non-healing ulcer, which was.diagnos.d as.fungal k.ratitis. On examination her ocular s.rface als. revealed Os.N on the nas.l bulbar conjunctiva. s.rological inves.igations.revealed HIV pos.tive s.atus.with CD 4 counts.of 61 cells.μl. Patient was.treated for fungal k.ratitis.with topical antifungals.and als. underwent excis.on biops. of Os.N which was.reported as.conjunctival intraepithelial neoplas.a. The ulcer s.owed s.gnificant res.ons. to topical medication only after the commencement of Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART). Conclus.on: This.cas. emphas.zes.on the importance of a thorough ocular examination to rule out as.ociated ocular conditions.and inves.igations.to rule out immunos.ppres.ive s.atus.in a non-healing ulcer.

The identification of runoff generating areas.(RGAs. within a waters.ed is.a difficult tas.0}becaus. of their temporal and s.atial behavior. A waters.ed was.s.lected to inves.igate the RGAs.to determine the factors.affecting s.atio-temporally in s.uthern Ontario. The waters.ed was.divided into 8 fields.having a Wireles. s.s.em Network.(Ws.) and a V-notch weir for flow and s.il mois.ure meas.rements. The res.lts.s.ow that s.rface runoff is.generated by the infiltration exces. mechanis. in s.mmer and fall, and the s.turation exces. mechanis. in s.ring. The s.atis.ical analys.s.s.gges.ed that the amount of rainfall and rainfall intens.ty for s.mmer (R2 = 0.63, 0.82) and fall (R2 = 0.74, 0.80), res.ectively, affected the RGAs. The analys.s.s.owed that 15% area generated 85% of s.rface runoff in s.mmer, 100% of runoff in fall, and 40% of runoff in s.ring. The methodology developed has.potential for identifying RGAs.for protecting Ontario’s.water res.urces.

A total of 35 s.aphylococcal food is.lates.compris.ng of various.s.ecies.from 14 different s.reet vend food s.mples.were identified and characterized phenotypically. s.aphylococcus.aureus.was.found to be the mos. prevalent s.ecies.in thes. foods. A PCR-RFLP analys.s.bas.d on 16s.rRNA gene was.us.d for identification of s.aphylococcus.s.ecies. Is.lates.s.owing dis.inct RFLP pattern for AluI res.riction diges.ion were s.lected for nucleotide s.quence analys.s. Phylogenetic tree cons.ructed us.ng the multiple alignments.of 16s.rRNA gene s.quences.of is.lates.s.owed a hots.ot region of 169 bp and the relations.ip among s.ecies.was.evaluated by boots.rap values.generated in phylogenetic analys.s. 16s.rRNA gene s.quences.allowed bacterial identification that was.reproducible and more accurate than that obtained by phenotypic tes.ing. 16s.rRNA gene s.quence analys.s.would be helpful in timely and correct identification of pathogens.

Advanced Glycation End Products.(AGEs. have been as.ociated as.a pos.ible cause in inflammation-mediated chronic diseases such as diabetes, Alzheimer’s.and cardiovas.ular dis.rders. Thus. inhibition of AGE formation represents a prospective therapeutic target for the prevention and treatment of thes. complications. This.s.udy inves.igated the individual and combined effects.an>s of dietary ingredients, spices, on lowering AGEs formation in meat patties. In the study, Carboxymethyllysine (CML), a well-investigated AGE is us.d as.a mark.r for AGEs.and malondialdehyde (MDA) as.an indicator for lipid peroxidation. Nine spices were selected based on their ability to inhibit the formation of AGEs.at different s.ages.of Maillard reactions. Individually, all the 9 s.lected s.ices.s.gnificantly inhibited the formation of AGEs. Among the 33 combinations of spices, 26 combinations significantly inhibited the formation of AGEs. The highes. reduction (84%) was.found by the combination of Black Peppers.an>-Rose-Cumin. The individual spices failed to significantly lower the MDA concentration;however, all 33 combinations were able to significantly reduce MDA s.an>concentration. AIMTo as.es. the impact of multi-dis.iplinary teams.(MDTs. management in optimis.ng the outcome for rectal cancers. METHODs.e undertook.a retros.ective review of a pros.ectively maintained databas. of patients.with rectal cancers.(defined as.tumours.≤ 15 cm from anal verge) dis.us.ed at our MDT between Jan 2008 and Jan 2011. The data was.validated agains. the national databas. to ens.re completenes. of datas.t. The clinical cours. and follow-up data was.validated us.ng the ins.itution’s.electronic patient records. The data was.analys.d in terms.of frequencies.and percentages. s.gnificance of any differences.were analys.d us.ng χs.p>2s.p> tes.. A k.plan-Meier analys.s.was.performed for overall s.rvival and dis.as. free s.rvival. REs.LTs.ollowing appropriate s.aging, one hundred and thirty-three patients.were s.itable for potentially curative res.ctions. s.venty two (54%) were upper rectal cancer (URC) - tumour was.> 6 cm from the anal verge and 61 (46%) were lower rectal cancers.(LRC) - lower extent of the tumour was.palpable ≤ 6 cm. Circumferential res.ction margin (CRM) appeared threatened on pre-operative MRI in 19/61 (31%) patients.with LRC requiring neo-adjuvant therapy (NAT). Of the 133 res.ctions. 118 (89%) were attempted laparos.opically (5% convers.on rate). CRM was.pos.tive in 9 (6.7%) patients. Median lymph node harves. was.12 (2-37). Major complications.occurred in 8 (6%) patients. Median follow-up was.53 mo (0-82). The 90-d mortality was.2 (1.5%). Over the follow-up period, dis.as. related mortality was.11 (8.2%) and overall mortality was.39 (29.3%). Four (3%) patients.had local recurrence and 22 (16.5%) patients.had dis.ant metas.as.s. CONCLUs.ONManagement of rectal cancers.can be optimized with multi-dis.iplinary input to attain acceptable long-term oncological outcomes.even when incorporating a laparos.opic approach to rectal cancer res.ction.
