prevalence of microscopic colitis in patients with diarrhea of unknown etiology in Turkey

AIM: To investigate the prevalence and demography of microscopic colitis in patients with diarrhea of unknown etiology and normal colonoscopy in Turkey. METHODS: Between March, 1998 to July, 2005, 129 patients with chronic non-bloody diarrhea of unexplained etiology who had undergone full colonoscopy with no obvious abnormalities were included in the study. Two biopsies were obtained from all colonic segments and terminal ileum for diagnosis of microscopic colitis. On histopathologic examination, criteria for lymphocytic colitis (intraepithelial lymphocyte ≥ 20 per 100 intercryptal epithelial cells, change in surface epithelium, mononuclear infiltration of the lamina propria) and collagenous colitis (subepithelial collagen band thickness ≥ 10 μm) were explored. RESULTS: Lymphocytic colitis was diagnosed in 12 (9%) patients (Female/Male: 7/5, mean age: 45 year, range: 27-63) and collagenous colitis was diagnosed in only 3 (2.5%) patients (all female, mean age: 60 years, range: 54-65).CONCLUSION: Biopsy of Turkish patients with the diagnosis of chronic non-bloody diarrhea of unexplained etiology and normal colonoscopic findings will reveal microscopic colitis in approximately 10% of the patients. Lymphocytic colitis is 4 times more frequent than collagenous colitis in these patients.

Breakup of the Neoarchean supercontinent Kenorland:Evidence from zircon and baddeleyite U-Pb ages of LIP-related mafic dykes in the Coorg Block,southern India

The Coorg Block in southern Peninsular India is one of the oldest crustal blocks on Earth that preserves the evidence for continental crust formation during the Paleo-Mesoarchean through subductionrelated arc magmatism,followed by.g.anulite facies metamorphism in the *** this study,we report for the first time,the'bar codes'of a major Paleoproterozoic Large Igneous province in the Coorg Block through the finding of mafic dyke *** gabbroic dykes from the Coorg Block,dom-inantly composed of plagioclase-pyroxene assemblage,show a restricted range in SiO_(2)values of 50.04-51.27 wt.%,and exhibit a sub-alkaline tholeiitic *** rocks show relatively flat LREE and constant HREE patterns and lack obvious Eu *** element modeling suggests that the dyke swarm was fed from a melt that originated at a shallow mantle level in the spinel stability *** grains are rare in the gabbro samples and those separated from two samples yielded 207Pb/206Pb weighted mean dates of 2214±12 Ma and 2221±7 *** grains show magmatic features with depleted LREE and enriched HREE and positive Ce and negative Eu *** grains were dated from five gabbro samples which yielded 207Pb/206Pb weighted mean ages ranging between 2217±7 Ma and 2228±10 *** combined data show a clear age peak at ca.2.2 *** mafic dykes in the Coorg Block show geochemical similarities with ca.2.2 ga mafic dyke swarms in different regions of the Dharwar and other cratons in Peninsular India and elsewhere on the *** data also support the inference that the global mafic magmatism at ca.2.2 ga was linked with intracontinental rifting of the Archean cratons through mantle upwelling or plume *** correlate the mafic dyke swarms in the Coorg Block with attempted rifting of the Neoarchean supercontinent Kenorland.

Organic matter produced by algae and cyanobacteria: Quantitative and qualitative characterization

This work aims at characterizing organic matter produced by an alga Euglena gracil~ and a cyanobacteria Microcystis aeruginosa and assessing the evolution of its characteristics during growth. A culture medium was optimized. The species growth phases were monitored using both visible spectrophotometry and flow cytometry cell counting. Organic matter fractionation according to hydrophobicity and specific UV absorbance （SUVA） index were used to specifically characterize the produced algal organic matter （AOM）. The AOM characteristics were both growth phase and species dependent. However, a similar evolution was observed. The hydrophilic fraction （HPI） was the major fraction whatever the growth phases and was almost the only one produced during lag and exponential phases. It represented around 75% of AOM during exponential phase and then decreased when the stationary phase appeared. It represented 46% and 60% of the AOM during late decline phase for the cyanobacteria and the alga respectively. The hydrophobic （HPO） and transphilic （TPH） fractions started to appear from the beginning of the stationary phase with more hydrophobic compounds coming from intracellular organic material of dying cells. HPO and TPH percentages still increased during the decline phase probably because of two additional processes： photo-dissolution and leaching of particulate organic matter from cells fragments. A comparison of AOM during late decline phase and natural organic matter （NOM） from glane River （France） underlined that AOM was more fiydrophilic and presented a lower SUVA for each fractions than NOM. However, the difference between NOM and AOM hydrophobicity narrowed during decline phase.

Coral-like structures of the y_(3-x)pr_(x)Fe_(5-y)yb_(y)O_(12),(0.00 ≤ x ≤ 0.04, 0.00 ≤ y ≤ 0.02) compound were synthesized using the sol-gel method. Structural investigation certified the y.g.cubic crystal structure formation, without any secondary phase. It is shown that, the relatively large ionic radius of the dopant cations results in an expansion of the lattice parameter, variations in the Iona-O-Iondangle, Iona-O,Iond-O and Ionc-O bond distances and decrease in the average crystallite size. Fourier transform infrared(FTIR) and Raman measurements are essential to testify the single-phase formation of y.g.crystal structure and are observed changes in the stretching and vibrational modes, respectively. The morphological study, energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS) spectra and textural properties show corallike structures, peaks associated with pr^(3+) and yb^(3+) atoms and the effect of dopants on surface area,diameter, and pore volume, respectively. The optical analysis from diffuse reflectance spectra witnessed an increase in the optical gap band, a decrease in Urbach energy and blue shift in the charge transfer,correlated with the expansion of the unit cell due to the dopant's insertion in the y.g.structure. A typical ferrimagnetic behavior is exhibited by the y_(3-x)pr_(x)Fe_(5-y)yb_(y)O_(12)compound. The saturation magnetization(M_(s)), cubic anisotropy constant(K_(1)) and coercive field(H_(c)) increase with the pr^(3+)cations content, as consequence of their magnetic nature and distribution around of Fe^(3+)ions due to the coexistence with the yb^(3+). Finally, for the first time, antibacterial tests by mean of the direct contact method were performed for y.g.co-doped with pr^(3+)and yb^(3+)and it is shown that, relatively high dosages of pr^(3+) cations favored the activity against S. aureus, therefore, a new biological property for y.g.doped with rare earths is presented.

This paper deals with the application of Acousto-ultrasonics,in con- junction with Pattern Recognition and Classification techniques,to the identification of residual impact properties of a class of polymeric material,namely,Polyvinylchlo- ride(PVC).PVC specimens of different low-energy repeated impact damage states are processed by Acousto-ultrasonics(AU)to retrieve AU signals in the form of dig- italized *** AU signals are grouped as distinct classes,each pertaining to a known level of repeated impact *** features of these AU signals are used to build Pattern Recognition(pr)*** classifiers are used to identify unknown damage states in other PVC specimens by classifying the re- trieved AU signals as belonging to one of the *** obtained results indicate that Acousto-ultrasonics in combination with Pattern Recognition and Classification techniques can be used for the quantitative non-destructive identification of damage states in PVC specimens of unknown low-energy repeated impact conditions.

In Eastern South America, high altitude grasslands represent a mountain system that has a high number of endemic species. However, studies on the ecology of plant communities in these environments remain scarce. We aimed to evaluate the patterns of biodiversity and structure of plant communities from rocky outcrops in high altitude grasslands of three areas at the Caparaó National Park, southeastern Brazil, by sampling 300 randomly distributed plots. Then, we compared the floristic composition, relative abundance, and biological and vegetation spectra among areas. We classified species as endemic and non-endemic and verified the occurrence of endangered species. Species richness was evaluated by rarefaction analysis on the sampling units. The importance value and species abundance distribution(sad) models were assessed. We also performed an indicator species analysis. We sampled 58 species belonging to 49 genera and 32 families. The number of species decreased with increasing altitude, with significant differences being observed among areas regarding richness, abundance, and cover. Of the total number of species, 10 are endemic to the Caparaó National Park and 17 are listed on the Brazilian Red List of endangered species. The dominant families on all peaks were Asteraceae and Poaceae. The sad models showed lognormal and geometric distributions, corroborating the fact that 10 species that were common to all three areas were also the most dominant ones in the communities and showed the highest importance values, which ranged between 35% and 60%. Indicator species analysis revealed that 28 species(48.27%) were indicators. Of these, 42.85% had maximum specificity, meaning that they occurred only in one area. Thus, the number of species per life form ratio was similar among areas, yet vegetation spectra differed, especially for hemicryptophytes. Marine organisms perform a sea of diel *** diel dynamics have been shown to be driven by light,energy resources,circadian rhythms,and the coordinated coupling of photoautotrophs and heterotrophic ***,we explore the diel fluctuation of viral production and decay and their impact on the total and active bacterial community in the coastal and open seawaters of the South China *** results showed that the night-production diel pattern of lytic viral production was concurrent with the lower viral decay at night,contributing to the accumulation of the viral population size during the night for surface *** diel variations in bacterial activity,community composition,and diversity were found highly affected by viral *** was revealed by the finding that bacterial community diversity was positively correlated to lytic viral production in the euphotic zone of the open ocean but was negatively related to lysogenic viral production in the coastal *** distinct but contrasting correlations suggest that viral life strategies can not only contribute to diversifying bacterial community but also potentially piggyback their host to dominate bacterial community,suggesting the tightly synchronized depth-dependent and habitat-specific diel patterns of virus-host *** further implies that viruses serve as an ecologically important driver of bacterial diel dynamics across the ocean,highlighting the viral roles in bacterial ecological and biogeochemical processes in the ocean.
