Spatial analysis of plant detritus processing in a Mediterranean River type: the case of the River Tirso Basin, Sardinia, Italy

The river continuum concept represents the most general framework addressing the spatial variation of both structure and function in river ecosystems. In the Mediterranean ecoregion, summer drought events and dams constitute the main sources of local disturbance to the structure and functioning of river ecosystems occurring in the river basin. In this study, we analysed patterns of spatial variation of detritus processing in a 7th order river of the Mediterranean ecoregion(River Tirso, Sardinia-Italy) and in three 4th order sub-basins which were exposed to different summer drought pressures. The study was carried out on Phragmites australis and Alnus glutinosa leaf detritus at 31 field sites in seasonal field experiment Detritus processing rates were higher for Alnus glutinosa than for Phragmites australis plant detritus. Processing rates of Alnus glutinosa leaves varied among seasons and study sites from 0.006 d -1 to 0.189 d -1 and those of Phragmites australis leaves ranged from 0.0008 d -1 to 0.102 d -1, with the lowest values occurring at sites exposed to summer drought. Seasons and sites accounted for a significant proportion of such variability. Alder detritus decay rates generally decreased with increasing stream order, while reed detritus decay rates generally increased on the same spatial gradient. Summer drought events affected these spatial patterns of variation by influencing significantly the decay rates of both plant detritus. The comparisons among and within sub-basins showed strong negative influence of summer drought on detritus processing rates. Similarly, in the entire River Tirso basin decay rates were always lower at disturbed than at undisturbed sites for each stream order; decay rates of reed detritus remained lower at those sites even after the end of the disturbance events, while alder decay rates recovered rapidly from the summer drought perturbations. DUSM： A Method for Requirements Specification and Refinement Based on Disciplined Use Cases and Screen Mockups

In this work, we present DUSM （Disciplined Use Cases with Screen Mockups）, a novel method for describing and refining requirements specifications based on disciplined use cases and screen mockups. Disciplined use cases are characterized by a quite stringent template to prevent common mistakes, and to increase the quality of the specifications. Use cases descriptions are formulated in a structured natural language, which allows to reach a good level of precision, avoiding the need for further notations and complex models. Screen mockups are precisely associated with the steps of the use cases scenarios and they present the corresponding GUIs （graphical user interfaces） as seen by the human actors before/after the steps executions, improving the comprehension and the expression of the non-functional requirements on the user interface. DUSM has been proposed and fine-tuned during several editions of a software engineering course at the University of Genova. Then, by means of a series of case studies and experiments, we validated the method and evaluated： 1） its effectiveness in improving the comprehension and, in general, the quality of the produced requirements specification, and 2） its applicability in the industry, where the method has been found useful and not particularly onerous.

Optic nerve crush as a model of retinal ganglion cell degeneration

Douglas-fir climate sensitivity at two contrasting sites along the southern limit of the European planting range

Douglas-fir(Pseudotsuga menziesii(Mirb.)Franco)is an important exotic tree species that was planted across a large part of Europe during the last *** both experimental trials and conventional forest plantations,the trees grow at a high rate and produce high-quality *** present study investigated climate-growth relationships of Douglas-fi r at two Italian sites that contrast in climate:a Mediterranean area in southern Italy(Mercurella site)and a cooler,moister site in the northern Apennines without summer aridity(Acquerino).The relationship between tree-ring chronologies and monthly climatic variables was evaluated by a moving average and correlation *** showed that the minimum temperature in February and in March play a key role for Douglas-fi r at both sites,with a positive eff ect on *** the northern site,it is also highly sensitive to late summer temperatures(negative correlation)and spring–summer precipitation(positive correlation).Growth rates in southern latitudes were high even in Europe and in the Mediterranean environment,with low sensitivity to climatic fl *** the basis of our results,further common garden experiments should test adaptation and the interaction between genetics and environment of second-or third-generation seeds from old stands across Europe such as done by the old International Union of Forest Research Organizations(IUFRO)or the European Douglasfi r Improvement Research Cooperative(EUDIREC)experimentation programmes.

Precision medicine is based on the identification of biomarkers of tumor development and *** biopsy is at the forefront of the ability to gather diagnostic and prognostic information on tumors,as it can be noninvasively performed prior or during *** biopsy mostly utilizes circulating tumor cells,or free DNA,but also *** latter are nanovesicles secreted by most cell types,found in any body fluid that deliver proteins,nucleic acids and lipids to nearby and distant cells with a unique homing *** function in signalling between the tumor microenvironment and the rest of the body,promoting metastasis,immune remodelling and drug *** are emerging as a key tool in precision medicine for cancer liquid biopsy,as they efficiently preserve their biomarker ***,exosomes strongly resemble the parental cell,which can help in assessing the oxidative and metabolic state of the donor *** this respect,exosomes represent one of the most promising new tools to fight *** review will discuss the clinical applications of profiling exosomal proteins and lipids by high-throughput proteomics and metabolomics,and nucleic acids by next generation sequencing,as well as how this may allow cancer diagnosis,therapy response monitoring and recurrence detection.

Synthesizing Service Composition Models on the Basis of Temporal Business Rules

Transformational approaches to generating design and implementation models from requirements can bring effectiveness and quality to software development. In this paper we present a framework and associated techniques to generate the process model of a service composition from a set of temporal business rules. Dedicated techniques including path- finding, branching structure identification and parallel structure identification are used for semi-automatically synthesizing the process model from the semantics-equivalent Finite State Automata of the rules. These process models naturally satisfy the prescribed behavioral constraints of the rules. With the domain knowledge encoded in the temporal business rules, an executable service composition program, e.g., a BPEL program, can be further generated from the process models. A running example in the e-business domain is used for illustrating our approach throughout this paper.
