The spared nerve injury (SNI) model of neuropathic pain was first developed by Decosterd and Woolf in 2000 in Sprague Dawley rats to enhance reproducibility of injury and behavioral responses resulting from a partial nerve injury. Given the differences in methodology and inconsistent behavioral data published in the SNI model of neuropathic pain in mice, and given that interspecies behavioral comparisons using the same peripheral nerve injury are presently lacking, in this study we assessed the development of mechanical and cold allodynia for five weeks in C57BL/6 mice and Sprague Dawley rats that underwent SNI. In rats and mice, the tibial and peroneal branches were ligated then severed, leaving the sural branch intact. By controlling several factors in the surgical procedure and behavioral tests, we found that rats developed and maintained strong mechanical and robust cold allodynia immediately following the injury that was maintained for the duration of the experiment (five weeks). In comparison, mice developed mechanical allodynia to a lesser magnitude which peaked at 2 weeks, but did not develop cold allodynia. We found both temporal and qualitative differences in the development of allodynic behaviors between SNI-mice and SNI-rats. Parallel analysis of interspecies differences can be exploited to reveal novel molecular players leading to divergent pain behaviors.

In this paper, we proposed a method for mapping the suitability of land for intensive anthropogenic use in the Maranhao River Basin, in the state of Goiás, Brazil. We analyzed existing 1:250,000 maps of the local geology, drainage system topography and geomorphological features. We generated new information based on our analysis, including a compilation of basic morphometric data and a map of the slopes in the basin, which we used to construct the geomorphological suitability map of the watershed. Our results indicate that 40% of the study area can support intensive anthropogenic use;the remaining 60% of the basin area is categorized as “fragile” regarding the expansion of intensive land use.

Obstetrician injury whilst managing a shoulder dystocia: A case report

Anecdotally, obstetricians have been known to sustain physical injuries whilst assisting deliveries but these are not always reported. This case describes how a mallet finger deformity was sustained by a consultant obstetrician whilst attempting to deliver a fetus with shoulder dystocia. Although this is a rare type of injury, it had significant impact on the consultant’s ability to provide clinical care for some time. Disruptions in service provision have direct financial consequences to the healthcare system. This case report highlights the importance of reporting these injuries at the workplace.

Abnormal subchondral bone remodeling leading to sclerosis is a main feature of osteoarthritis(OA), and osteomodulin(OMD), a proteoglycan involved in extracellular matrix mineralization, is associated with the sclerotic phenotype. However, the functions of OMD remain poorly understood, specifically in vivo. We used Omd knockout and overexpressing male mice and mutant zebrafish to study its roles in bone and cartilage metabolism and in the development of OA. The expression of Omd is deeply correlated with bone and cartilage microarchitectures affecting the bone volume and the onset of subchondral bone sclerosis and spontaneous cartilage lesions. Mechanistically, OMD binds to RANKL and inhibits osteoclastogenesis, thus controlling the balance of bone remodeling. In conclusion, OMD is a key factor in subchondral bone sclerosis associated with OA. It participates in bone and cartilage homeostasis by acting on the regulation of osteoclastogenesis. Targeting OMD may be a promising new and personalized approach for OA.

The Determinants of Anthropometric Deficits in Children under Five Years Old in Tete Province Mozambique Using Hierarchy Approach

Introduction: The malnutrition in children under 5 years is a serious public health problem in the developing countries such as Mozambique. The stunting can affect cognitive and physical development and compromise the school performance. Method: A cross sectional study was carried out which used the secondary data from a survey conducted by National Health Institute of Mozambique, in districts of Angonia, Tsangano, Magoe and Changara in Tete Province, Mozambique. The polynomial regression model and the hierarchical approach were used to examine the association between social economic factors and malnutrition in children measured by stunting (low height for age) and underweight (low weight for age). Results: The prevalence of moderate and severe stunting was 39.8%, and prevalence of moderate and severe underweight was 19.6%. In the basic level, the households that had 1 durable goods possession were associated to 1.46 times greater than the mild underweight, OR = 1.46 (C.I. 95% 1.02 - 2.11). In the intermediate level, lack of latrine increased 2.01 times greater than the moderate and severe underweight in children, OR = 2.01 (C.I. 95% 1.09 - 3.70);In the immediate level, the child deworming had 1.91 times greater than the moderate and severe stunting, OR = 1.91 (C.I.95% 1.04 - 3.52) and children who did not breastfeed had 2.42 times greater than the moderate and severe stunting, OR = 2.42 (C.I. 1.49 - 3.43). Conclusion: In the countries where the weak health system and the inadequate children food are frequent, the prevalence of undernutrition in children remains very high.

三倍体毛白杨(triploid Populus tomentosa)是我国华北地区主要纸浆林品种,在该地区多采用宽窄行模式栽植。为基于根系结构特征制定该模式下毛白杨人工林高效水肥管理策略和明确影响其根系空间分布的主要因子,在5年生林分中于8株样树周围挖取2 106个土柱,研究该栽植模式下毛白杨根系生物量的空间分布特征,并分析了细根垂直分布对土壤有机质、速效磷和碱解氮等的响应。结果表明,一维垂向上,宽行内细根根重密度(FRBD)在0–30 cm土层中随深度增加而递减,但在30cm以下土层呈均匀分布(p=0.079);窄行内FRBD呈"双峰"分布,即在0–20 cm(22%)和70–110 cm(31%)土层均有较多细根分布;10–150 cm各土层中,窄行FRBD较宽行高17%–148%。宽、窄行内,随深度增加,粗根根重密度(CRBD)均呈先增后减变化,而细根粗根比(F/C)无显著变化(p>0.05),窄行平均F/C较宽行高60%。一维径向上,宽、窄行内FRBD均呈近均匀分布,而CRBD和F/C均随距离增加分别显著递减和增大。二维尺度上,FRBD在窄行内分布相对均匀,但在宽行内主要集中在表土层且随距离增加细根浅层化程度增强;CRBD在树干两侧呈"不对称"分布;垂向0–20 cm、径向160–300 cm范围是宽行内平均FRBD和F/C较高区域,分别为宽行相应指标总平均的2.8和1.1倍。FRBD在0–30 cm土层中随土壤有机质、速效磷和碱解氮含量的增加而逐渐增大,但在30 cm以下土层中无明显变化趋势。研究结果表明,宽、窄行间毛白杨根系分布的差异性主要体现在细根一维垂直分布和细根、粗根二维分布上。土壤有机质、速效磷和碱解氮是0–30 cm土层中毛白杨细根垂直分布的重要影响因子,但对下层土壤中根系分布无影响。对宽窄行栽植的毛白杨林分灌溉时,灌溉水应供给到窄行区域;施肥时,缓释肥和速效肥应分别浅施在宽行中央附近和窄行内。

Sarcopenic Obesity: Correlation with Clinical, Functional, and Psychological Status in a Rehabilitation Setting

Obesity and sarcopenia combination, appropriately defined as sarcopenic obesity (SO), due to disproportionally reduced/low lean body mass compared to excess fat mass, may lead to disability. Aims: The aim of our study was to investigate the relationship among sarcopenic obesity, physical performance, disability, and quality of life in a rehabilitation setting. Methods: Participants were recruited among obese patients (BMI > 30 kg/m2) admitted to the rehabilitation facility at the Department of Experimental Medicine, Medical Physiopatology, Food Science and Endocrinology Section during a 1-year period. A multidimensional evaluation was performed through bioelectrical impedance analysis and anthropometry, handgrip strength test, Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), 6-minute walk test (6MWT) and blood chemistry parameters. Psychological status (SCL-90 questionnaire), quality of life, and comorbidity (Charlson comorbidity index score) were also evaluated. Obesity was diagnosed as increased fat mass by 35% in women and by 25% in men. Sarcopenia was defined if lean body mass (LBM) was <90% of the subject’s ideal LBM. Results: 79 patients (48 women and 31 men;mean age: 60.1 ± 11.5 years, and 58.6 ± 10.8 years, respectively) were enrolled. Results showed a high prevalence of SO (54.4%) in our samples of obese subjects. Sarcopenia was present not only among older obese adults but also among younger obese subjects, and was related to reduced functional performance, to inflammatory status and to worse psychological status and quality of life.

Background:Regular physical activity(PA)has been postulated to improve,or at least maintain,immunity across the life ***,the link between physical(in)activity and coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)remains to be *** small-scale prospective cohort study is nested within a randomized controlled trial aimed to investigate the possible associations between PA levels and clinical outcomes among hospitalized patients with moderate to severe ***:Hospitalized patients with COVID-19(mean age:54.9 years)were recruited from the Clinical Hospital of the School of Medicine of the University of Sao Paulo(a quaternary referral teaching hospital)and from Ibirapuera Field Hospital,both located in Sao Paulo,*** level was assessed using the Baecke Questionnaire of Habitual Physical *** primary outcome was hospital length of *** secondary outcomes were mortality,admission to the intensive care unit(ICU),and mechanical ventilation ***:The median hospital length of stay was 7.0§4.0 days,median§IQR;3.3%of patients died,13.8%were admitted to the ICU,and 8.6%required mechanical *** linear regression models showed that PA indices were not associated with hospital length of stay(work index:b=-0.57(95%confidence interval(95%CI):-1.80 to 0.65),p=0.355;sport index:b=0.43(95%CI:-0.94 to 1.80),p=0.536;leisure-time index:b=1.18(95%CI:-0.22 to 2.59),p=0.099;and total activity index:b=0.20(95%CI:-0.48 to 0.87),p=0.563).None of the PA indices were associated with mortality,admission to the ICU,or mechanical ventilation requirement(all p>0.050).Conclusion:Among hospitalized patients with COVID-19,PA did not independently associate with hospital length of stay or any other clinically relevant *** findings should be interpreted as meaning that,among already hospitalized patients with more severe forms of COVID-19,being active is a potential protective factor likely outweighed by a cluster of comorbidities(e.
