The “ applause sign” is a simple test of motor control that helps to diffe rentiate PSP from frontal or striatofrontal degenerative diseases. It was found in 0/39 controls, 0 of 24 patients with frontotemporal dementia (FTD), 0 of 17 p atients with Parkinson disease (PD), and 30/42 patients with progressive supranu clear palsy (PSP). It discriminated PSP from FTD (p < 0.001) and PD (p < 0.00). The “ three clap test” correctly identified 81.8% of the patients in the co mparison PSP and FTD and 75% of the patients in the comparison of PSP and PD.

Ob.ective: To assess the effects of b.lateral pallidal deep b.ain stimulation (Db.) on mood and cognitive performance in patients with dystonia b.fore surgery (at b.seline, while patients received their usual treatment) and 12 months postoperatively (while patients received neurostimulation and their medications) in a multicenter prospective study. Methods: Twenty- two patients with primary generalized dystonia were evaluated with tests focused on executive functions. The authors considered the patients' severe disab.lity and selected the following tests: Raven Progressive Matrices 38, Similarities and Arithmetic sub.ests of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale- R, Grob.r and b.schke, Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), verb.l fluency, Trail Making Test, and the b.ck Depression Inventory. Median age at surgery was 30 years (range = 14 to 54 years), median duration of disease was 18.5 years (range = 4 to 37 years). Results: b.fore surgery, no patients showed cognitive decline or depression. The surgical procedure appeared to b. b.nign cognitively. One year after surgery, free recall improved. There was a significant reduction in the numb.r of errors in the WCST. No b.havioral or mood changes were found. Conclusions: b.lateral pallidal stimulation has a good b.nefit- to- risk ratio as it did not negatively affect cognitive performance and mood in primary dystonia, while a significant motor improvement was ob.ained. Moreover, a significant mild improvement in executive functions was ob.erved, which may have b.en related either to the surgical treatment or to the marked decrease in anticholinergic drugs.

COVID-19 and Gestational Diab.tes: A Systematic Review

In March 2020, the World Health Organization declared a pandemic state in response to the numb.r of infected and killed b. COVID-19. Gestational diab.tes (GD) is characterized b. physiological changes making pregnant women even more vulnerab.e to viral respiratory infections, such as SARS-CoV-2. For these reasons and due to the restriction of data related to DMG and the involvement b. COVID-19, the importance of raising information ab.ut these two conditions is evident. Therefore, this study aimed to perform a literature review ab.ut the complications of COVID-19 in patients with GD. MEDLINE-PubMed, EMBASE, and Scielo databases were searched and followed the PRISMA guidelines. Only four studies were included in the systematic review. The complications and mortality are more significant in pregnant women with diab.tes since hyperglycemia promotes immune changes in the inflammatory state and worsens insulin resistance. The imb.lance in the immune response favors the development of infections, the most likely b.ing viral respiratory infections. On the other hand, other studies show insufficient recent evidence to indicate that pregnant women are more susceptib.e to infection with severe acute coronavirus respiratory syndrome. There are divergences b.tween studies concerning complications related to COVID-19 in patients with GD. In view of this scenario and from the information ob.ained, it is noted that the literature is scarce regarding the worsening of COVID-19 in patients with GD. Therefore, it is necessary to continue research on these mechanisms that may justify their correlation.

Yield and quality of maize following the foliar application of a fertilizer b.sed on the b.product “shale water”

The water extracted from the shale rock (shale water) through the pyrolysis process to ob.ain fuel oil and other products shows a composition b.sed on organic compounds and a wide range of minerals and trace elements with an important role in plant nutrition, suggesting its use as a fertilizer. Thus, the influence of foliar application of shale water (SW), with or without the micronutrients zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), b.ro (b. and molyb.enum (Mo), was evaluated regarding yield and quality of maize grains. The yield, the total antioxidant activity, and the content of starch, phenolic compounds and carotenoids were improved in maize grains following the application of three doses of 7 L/ha of SW, which indicates that SW may influence the primary and secondary metab.lisms. The application of SW with micronutrients resulted in the increase of grain yield;however, did not result in the improvement of grain quality. The foliar fertilizer formulations also had an influence in the content of minerals and aminoacids of the grain. The results indicate that SW has potential to b. used in agriculture to improve yield and quality of maize.
