Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have an increased risk of 10%-15% developing colorectal cancer (CRC) that is a common disease of high economic costs in developed countries. The CRC has been increasing in recent years and its mortality rates are very high. Multiple biological and biochemical factors are responsible for the onset and progression of this pathology. Moreover, it appears absolutely necessary to investigate the environmental factors favoring the onset of CRC and the promotion of colonic health. The gut microflora, or microbiota, has an extensive diversity both quantitatively and qualitatively. In utero, the intestine of the mammalian fetus is sterile. At birth, the intestinal microbiota is acquired by ingesting maternal anal or vaginal organisms, ultimately developing into a stable community, with marked variations in microbial composition between individuals. The development of IBD is often associated with qualitative and quantitative disorders of the intestinal microbial flora (dysbiosis). The healthy human gut harbours about 10 different bacterial species distributed in colony forming units which colonize the gastrointestinal tract. The intestinal microbiota plays a fundamental role in health and in the progression of diseases such as IBD and CRC. In healthy subjects, the main control of intestinal bacterial colonization occurs through gastric acidity but other factors such as endoluminal temperature, competition between different bacterial strains, peristalsis and drugs can influence the intestinal microenvironment. The microbiota exerts diverse physiological functions to include: growth inhibition of pathogenic microorganisms, synthesis of compounds useful for the trophism of colonic mucosa, regulation of intestinal lymphoid tissue and synthesis of amino acids. A novel process is reported which produces an asymmetric supercapacitor through the complete recycling of end-of-life lithium ion *** electrodic powder recovered by industrial scale mechanical treatment of spent batteries was leached and the dissolved metals were precipitated as mixed metals *** battery-type positive electrodes were produced by electrodeposition into nanoporous alumina templates from the electrolytic baths prepared by dissolution of the precipitated *** impact of the different metals contained in the electrodic powder was evaluated by benchmarking the electrochemical performances of the recovered nanowires-based electrodes against electrodes produced by using high-purity *** of inactive Cu in the nanowires lowered the final capacitance of the electrodes while Ni showed a synergistic effect with cobalt providing a higher capacitance with respect to synthetic Co *** carbonaceous solid recovered after leaching was indepth characterized and tested as negative *** the chemical and electrochemical characterization indicate that the recovered graphite is characterized by the presence of oxygen functionalities introduced by the leaching *** has led to the obtainment of a recovered graphite characterized by an XPS C/O ratio,Raman spectrum and morphology close to literature reports for reduced graphene *** asymmetric supercapacitor assembled using the recovered nanowires-based positive electrodes and graphite as negative electrodes has shown a specific capacitance of 42 F g^(-1), computed including the whole weight of the positive electrode and recovered graphite,providing a maximum energy density of ~9 Wh kg^(-1) and a power density of 416 W kg^(-1) at 2.5 mA cm^(-2).

The redox state of cellular thiols is widely studied because it was recently linked to many different diseases and pathologies. In this work we quantified the concentrations of protein disulfides (PSSP) and thiol-protein mixed disulfides (XSSP) in rat tissues (liver, kidney and heart) and cells (Raw 264.7) by an improved method of XSSP and PSSP determination after oxidative stress induced by diamide. Under native and denaturing conditions, a thiol block by N-ethymaleimide was introduced to avoid thiol exchange reaction activations by protein SH groups (PSH) (PSH + XSSP ←→ PSSP + XSH) and alterations of original XSSP/PSSP levels. Low molecular weight thiols (XSH) and PSH were respectively measured by HPLC on supernatants and on corresponding pellets by DTNB (Ellman’s reagent) after dithiothreitol reduction. PSSP concentrations of liver, heart and kidney were respectively 0.304, 0.605 and 0.785 μmoles/g and after diamide exposure they were significantly augmented of about 65%-70% in liver and heart, but not in the kidney. Normal XSSP, that were -20 times lower than normal PSSP were induced by diamide in liver and heart of about 40 times, but not in kidney. Thermodynamic criteria regarding the pKa values of thiols engaged as PSSP and gSSP were used to interpret dethiolation mechanisms via thiol exchange reactions.

Atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases, chronic inflam-matory diseases of multifactorial etiology, are the lead-ing cause of death worldwide. In the last decade, more infectious agents, labeled as "infectious burden", rather than any single pathogen, have been showed to con-tribute to the development of atherosclerosis through different mechanisms. Some microorganisms, such as Chlamydia pneumoniae(C. pneumoniae), human cytomegalovirus, etc. may act directly on the arterial wall contributing to endothelial dysfunction, foam cell formation, smooth muscle cell proliferation, platelet ag-gregation as well as cytokine, reactive oxygen specie, growth factor, and cellular adhesion molecule produc-tion. Others, such as Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori), in-fluenza virus, etc. may induce a systemic inflammation which in turn may damage the vascular wall(e.g., by cytokines and proteases). Moreover, another indirect mechanism by which some infectious agents(such as H. pylori, C. pneumoniae, periodontal pathogens, etc.) may play a role in the pathogenesis of atherosclero-sis is molecular mimicry. given the complexity of the mechanisms by which each microorganism may con-tribute to atherosclerosis, defining the interplay of moreinfectious agents is far more difficult because the pro-atherogenic effect of each pathogen might be ampli-fied. Clearly, continued research and a greater aware-ness will be helpful to improve our knowledge on the complex interaction between the infectious burden and atherosclerosis.
