The descriptive epidemiology of sitting in Chilean adults: Results from the National Health Survey 2009-2010

Background: Although evidence on the health effects of sedentary behavior(SB) has grown systematically in recent years, few developing countries have reported population levels of SB, especially in South America. Our objective was to describe time spent sitting in a representative sample from Chile categorized by age, gender, educational level, and body mass index(BMI).Methods: A national health survey was conducted in Chile in a nationally representative sample(n = 5411) in 2009-2010. Sitting time(ST) was measured with the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire Version ***: Data were from 5031 participants(43.26±0.41 years, mean±SE; 40.3% male). Overall, there were no gender differences in mean ST(men: 158.10±5.80 min/day, women 143.45±4.77 min/day; p = 0.05). ST was lower in those who lived in rural areas compared with urban areas(99.4 min/day vs. 160.0 min/day; p = 0.001). ST increased significantly with increasing BMI, but only in men(p = 0.009), and was positively related to years of education in both men and women(p < 0.0001).Conclusion: The findings were different from those reported in other countries and contexts, reinforcing the need for international surveillance and monitoring over time to inform policy makers. Differences in ST across different groups emphasize the need to develop tailored messages and interventions for reducing ST in different population subgroups.

Phenotypic variation in food utilization in an outbreak insect herbivore

The effects of nutrition may have subtantial impact on insect evolution by shaping different components of phenotypes. The key to undestanding this evolutionary process is to know how nutritional condition affects additive and nonadditive components of the phenotype. However, this is poorly understood in outbreaking insects. We investigated the additive and nonadditive variation present in food utilization traits in spruce budworm individuals subjected to chronic nutritional stress. A total of 160 full-sib families of spruce budworm （Choristoneurafumiferana Clem.） were raised under laboratory condi- tions, feeding on 2 diets （high and low energy） during 3 generations. Variables tested were pupal mass, consumption rate （RCR）, growth rate （RGR）, approximate digestibility （AD）, the efficiency of conversion of digested food （ECD） and the efficiency of conversion of ingested food （ECI）. Our results show that all traits tested presented a high percentage of nonadditive effects that modulate phenotype expression. We found a significant impact of family × diet interaction on pupal mass, RGR and ECD. Furthermore, these traits exhib- ited the greatest heritability. There was no evidence of presence of maternal effects. The results revealed that food utilization traits may evolve through epigenetics effects, such as phenotypic plasticity. This information can be used by modellers to improve forecast of spruce budworm population dynamics.

Deciphering the role of PGC-1α in neurological disorders: from mitochondrial dysfunction to synaptic failure

The onset and mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative diseases remain uncertain. The main features of neurodegenerative diseases have been related with cellular and molecular events like neuronal loss, mitochondrial dysfunction and aberrant accumulation of misfolded proteins or peptides in specific areas of the brain. The most prevalent neurodegenerative diseases belonging to age-related pathologies are Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's disease, Parkinson's disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Interestingly, mitochondrial dysfunction has been observed to occur during the early onset of several neuropathological events associated to neurodegenerative diseases. The master regulator of mitochondrial quality control and energetic metabolism is the transcriptional coactivator peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1-alpha(PGC-1α). Additionally, it has been observed that PGC-1α appears to be a key factor in maintaining neuronal survival and synaptic transmission. In fact, PGC-1α downregulation in different brain areas(hippocampus, substantia nigra, cortex, striatum and spinal cord) that occurs in function of neurological damage including oxidative stress, neuronal loss, and motor disorders has been seen in several animal and cellular models of neurodegenerative diseases. Current evidence indicates that PGC-1α upregulation may serve as a potent therapeutic approach against development and progression of neuronal damage. Remarkably, increasing evidence shows that PGC-1α deficient mice have neurodegenerative diseases-like features, as well as neurological abnormalities. Finally, we discuss recent studies showing novel specific PGC-1α isoforms in the central nervous system that appear to exert a key role in the age of onset of neurodegenerative diseases and have a neuroprotective function in the central nervous system, thus opening a new molecular strategy for treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. The reinforcing impact of Lignocellulosic micro and nanofibrillated cellulose(L-MNFCs)obtained from Eucalyp-tus Globulus bark in Urea-Formaldehyde UF adhesive was tested.L-MNFCs were prepared by an environmentally friendly,low-cost process using a combination process involving steam explosion followed by refining and ultra-fine *** L-MNFCs showed a web-like morphology with some aggregates and lignin *** present a mixture of residual fibers and fine elements with a width varying between 5 nm to 20μm,*** effects of the addition of low amounts of L-MNFCs(1%wt.)on the properties of three different adhe-sives(Urea-Formaldehyde UF,Phenol-Formaldehyde PF,and Tannin-Hexamine TH)were studied by the evolution of the pH,the viscosity,and the mechanical *** showed that the viscosity of PF and UF adhesives increased with the addition of L-MNFCs,unlike ***,the addition led to better mechan-ical behavior for the three *** were then prepared using modified UF with L-MNFCs and *** showed that an amount of 1%*** L-MNFCs was sufficient to increase the internal bonding by≈67%,the modulus of elasticity by≈43%,and the modulus of rupture by≈29%.

Neuroprotective effects of erythropoietin on neurodegenerative and ischemic brain diseases: the role of erythropoietin receptor

Erythropoietin （Epo） is a fundamental hormone in the regulation of hematopoiesis, and other secondary roles mediated by the binding of the hormone to its specific receptor （EpoR）, which leads to an activation of key signaling pathways that induce an increase in cell differentiation, apoptosis control and neuroprotection. It has been suggested that their ftmction depends on final conformation of glycosylations, related with affinity to the receptor and its half-life. The presence of EpoR has been reported in different tissues including central nervous system, where it has been demonstrated to exert a neuroprotective function against oxidative stress conditions, such as ischemic injury and neurodegenerative diseases. There is also evidence of an increase in EpoR expression in brain cell lysates of Alzheimer＇s patients with respect to healthy patients. These results are related with extensive in vitro experimental data of neuroprotection obtained from cell lines, primary cell cultures and hippocampal slices. Additionally, this data is correlated with in vivo experiments （water maze test） in mouse models of Alzheimer＇s disease where Epo treatment improved cognitive function. These stud- ies support the idea that receptor activation induces a neuroprotective effect in neurodegenerative disorders including dementias, and especially Alzheimer＇s disease. Taken together, available evidence suggests that Epo appears to be a central element for EpoR activation and neuroprotective properties in the central nervous system. In this review, we will describe the mechanisms associated with neuroprotection and its relation with the activation of EpoR in order with identify new targets to develop pharmacological strategies.

Bioequivalence Study of Two Hydrochlorothiazide Formulations after Oral Administration in Healthy Chilean Volunteers

The study was carried out in healthy Chilean volunteers in order to compare the pharmacokinetics （rate and extent absorption） of two commercial oral formulations of 50 mg hydrochlorothiazide. Thirty nine subjects were administered hydrochlorothiazide tablets of test （T） and reference （R） formulation in a single blind, randomized, fasting, 2 × 2 crossover study, seven washout days. Blood samples were taken during a 48 h period after drug administration. Plasma concentrations were quantified by HPLC-MS/MS. The primary parameters log-transformed Cmax （maximum plasma concentration）, A UC0-t and A UC0-∞ （area under the plasma concentration-time curve from zero to the last time and zero to infinity） were tested for bioequivalence considering the ratios of geometric means （test/reference）; whereas tmax （the time of maximum plasma concentration） was analyzed nonparametrically. The 90% confidence intervals for the geometric mean values of test/reference ratios for Cmax, A UCo.t and A UC0-∞ were 95.37%, 93.59% and 96.34%, respectively, and were located within the bioequivalence acceptance range of 80-125%, as were tmax and elimination constants. Together, we conclude that the test formulation of the hydrochlorothiazide 50 mg tablet is bioequivalent to the reference product and suitable for generic prescription.
