Effect of Iron Nanoparticles Synthesized by a Sol-Gel Process on Rhodococcus erythropolis T902.1 for Biphenyl Degradation

Nanoparticles (NPS) are considered as a new generation of compounds to improve environmental remediation and biological processes. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of iron NPS encapsulated in porous silica (SiO2) on the biphenyl biodegradation by Rhodococcus erythropolis T902.1 (RT902.1). The iron NPS (major iron oxide FexOy form) were dispersed in the porosity of a SiO2 support synthesized by sol-gel process. These Fe/SiO2 NPS offer a stimulating effect on the biodegradation rate of biphenyl, an organic pollutant that is very stable and water-insoluble. This positive impact of NPS on the microbial biodegradation was found to be dependent on the NPS concentration ranging from 10-6 m to 10-4 m. After 18 days of incubation the cultures containing NPS at a concentration of 10-4 m of iron improved RT902.1 growth and degraded 35% more biphenyl than those without NPS (positive control) or with the sole SiO2 particles. Though the microorganism could not interact directly with the insoluble iron NPS, the results show that about 10% and 35% of the initial 10-4 m iron NPS encapsulated in the SiO2 matrix would be incorporated inside or adsorbed on the cell surface respectively and 35% would be released in the supernatant. These results suggest that RT902.1 would produce siderophore-like molecules to attract iron from the porous silica matrix.

m>Introductionm>: Worldwide, the incidence of kidney stones has been progressively increasing. Various factors can influence the risk of stone formation, including lifestyle and eating habits. The dietary investigation is a standard of care in patients with urolithiasis. The objectives of this study were to determine the dietary habits of lithiasis patients in the city of Kinshasa and to investigate the association between dietary habits and the composition of the stones. m>material and methodsm>: From January 2017 to September 2019, 85 patients attending 8 hospitals participated in the nutrition survey. Various foods commonly consumed in the Democratic Republic of Congo were categorized based on their composition: foods rich in animal proteins, foods rich in calcium, foods high in sugar, foods high in oxalate, and various vegetables and fruits. We also investigated daily water intake. The composition of the collected stones was analyzed by infrared spectrophotometry. m>Resultsm>: The mean (SD) age of patients was 47.1 (14.0) years, 63.5% of patients were males, 75.3% of the patients had stones located in the upper urinary tract, and 7.1% were undernourished. most of patients consumed vegetables (77.6%), animal proteins (62.4%), and foods rich in oxalate (58.8%). The daily water intake was less than 1500 mL in more than half of the patients (68.2%). major anhydrous uric acid stones were associated with a high body mass index (p = 0.025). male patients with a high oxalate diet had more calcium oxalate stones (64.3%) compared to other types of stones (p = 0.041). m>Conclusionm>: High consumptions of vegetables and low water intake were linked to the formation of calcium oxalate monohydrate stones. more data are needed to confirm these findings.

AIm To study the impact of vaccination critical illness due to H1N1pdm09, we compared the incidence and severity of H1N1pdm09 infection in Canada and *** We studied two national cohorts that included children with documented H1N1pdm09 infection, admitted to a pediatric intensive care unit(PICU) in Canada and in France between October 1, 2009 and January 31, *** Vaccination coverage prior to admission to PICUs was higher in Canada than in France(21% vs 2% of children respectively, P mission of these critically ill patients was substantially lower than in the general pediatric population(P mpared to 125 children(incidence = 1.1/100000) in France(P mortality rates were similar in Canada and France(4.4% vs 6.5%, P = 0.45, respectively), median invasive mechanical ventilation duration and mean PICU length of stay were shorter in Canada(4 d vs 6 d, P = 0.02 and 5.7 d vs 8.2 d, P = 0.03, respectively). H1N1pdm09 vaccination prior to PICU admission was associated with a decreased risk of requiring invasive mechanical ventilation(OR = 0.30, 95%CI: 0.11-0.83, P = 0.02).CONCLUSION The critical illness due to H1N1pdm09 had a higher incidence in Canada than in France. Critically ill children were less likely to have received vaccination prior to hospitalization in comparison to general population and children vaccinated had lower risk of ventilation.

采用一步法于室温下有选择性地将小管径的单壁碳纳米管(SWCNTs)分散于生物相容性的聚合物——壳聚糖的水溶液中,并将其滴涂于玻碳电极表面,制备出微过氧化物酶-11(mP-11)修饰电极。循环伏安结果表明SWCNT促进了mP-11在电极表面的直接电子传递,在pH=7.2的磷酸缓冲溶液中,mP-11的式电位为-0.36V(***),mP-11在电极表面的直接电子转移表观速率常数和覆盖度分别为78s-1和8.76×***-2。进一步的研究结果显示,固定在SWCNT表面的mP-11能保持其对氧气和过氧化氢还原的生物电催化活性,适合用作生物燃料电池的阴极和过氧化氢传感器。氧气在该修饰电极上的还原经历一个四电子过程;该过氧化氢生物传感器对过氧化氢还原的检测具有响应灵敏度高(响应时间小于4s),检测线性范围为2.5×10-6～7.0×10-5μm,检测限为0.8μm,相应的米氏常数和检测灵敏度分别为1.0mmand22.4μA/mm。

Recent studies have demonstrated a new role for Klf10, a Krüppel-like transcription factor, in skeletal muscle, specifically relating to mitochondrial function. Thus, it was of interest to analyze additional tissues that are highly reliant on optimal mitochondrial function such as the cerebellum and to decipher the role of Klf10 in the functional and structural properties of this brain region. In vivo (magnetic resonance imaging and localized spectroscopy, behavior analysis) and in vitro (histology, spectroscopy analysis, enzymatic activity) techniques were applied to comprehensively assess the cerebellum of wild type (WT) and Klf10 knockout (KO) mice. Histology analysis and assessment of locomotion revealed no significant difference in Klf10 KO mice. Diffusion and texture results obtained using mRI revealed structural changes in KO mice characterized as defects in the organization of axons. These modifications may be explained by differences in the levels of specific metabolites (myo-inositol, lactate) within the KO cerebellum. Loss of Klf10 expression also led to changes in mitochondrial activity as reflected by a significant increase in the activity of citrate synthase, complexes I and IV. In summary, this study has provided evidence that Klf10 plays an important role in energy production and mitochondrial function in the cerebellum.
