The contamination of soils by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons （PAHs） is a widespread environmental problem and the remediation of PAHs from these areas has been a major concern. The effectiveness of many in situ bioremediation systems may be constrained by low contaminant bioavailability due to limited aqueous solubility or a large magnitude of sorption. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of methyl-β-cyclodextrin （MCD） on bioaugmentation by Paracoccus sp. strain HPD-2 of an aged PAH-contaminated soil. When 10% （W/W） MCD amendment was combined with bioaugmentation by the PAH-degrading bacterium Paracoccus sp. strain HPD-2, the percentage degradation of total PAHs was significantly enhanced up to 34.8%. Higher counts of culturable PAH- degrading bacteria and higher soil dehydrogenase and soil polyphenol oxidase activities were observed in 10% （W/W） MCD-assisted bioaugmentation soil. This MCD-assisted bioaugmentation strategy showed significant increases （p 〈 0.05） in the average well color development （AWCD） obtained by the BIOLOG Eco plate assay, shannon-Weaver index （H） and simpson index （λ） compared with the controls, implying that this strategy at least partially restored the microbiological functioning of the PAH-contaminated soil. The results suggest that MCD-aided bioaugmentation by Paracoccus sp. strain HPD-2 may be a promising practical bioremediation strategy for aged PAH-contaminated soils.

Microsurgical epididymal sperm aspiration （MEsA） refers to retrieval of sperm-containing fluid from optimal areas of the epididymis that are selected and sampled using high-power optical magnification provided by an operating microscope. Retrieved sperm are subsequently used for intracytoplasmic sperm injection （ICsI） to induce fertilization and pregnancy. MEsA is considered by many experts to be the gold standard technique for sperm retrieval in men with obstructive azoospermia given its high yield of quality sperm, excellent reported fertilization and pregnancy rates, and low risk of complications. However, MEsA must be performed in an operating room, requires microsurgical skills and is only useful for reproduction using ICsI. Herein we present an overview of the evaluation of candidate patients for MEsA, the technical performance of the procedure and the outcomes that have been reported.

Ejaculatory dysfunction is a highly prevalent clinical condition that may be classified along a continuum that ranges from premature ejaculation （PE）, through retarded or delayed ejaculation （DE）, to complete anejaculation （AE）. Retrograde ejaculation （RE） represents a distinct entity in which ejaculate is expelled either partially or completely into the bladder. While DE and PE are significant sources of sexual dissatisfaction among men and their partners, patients with these disorders retain normal fertility in most cases. Conversely, men with AE and RE are unable to deliver sperm into the female genital tract and are therefore rendered subfertile. Therefore, in reviewing ejaculatory disorders as they relate to fertility, this paper will primarily focus on the diagnosis and management of AE and RE. Physiology, diagnostic strategies, pharmacological treatments, and procedural interventions relevant to AE and RE are discussed.

Geodynamics of oceanic plateau and plume head accretion and their role in Phanerozoic orogenic systems of China

We present three 3D numerical models of deep subduction where buoyant material from an oceanic plateau and a plume interact with the overriding plate to assess the influence on subduction dynamics, trench geometry, and mechanisms for plateau accretion and continental growth. Transient instabilities of the convergent margin are produced, resulting in： contorted trench geometry; trench migration parallel with the plate margin; folding of the subducting slab and orocline development at the convergent margin; and transfer of the plateau to the overriding plate. The presence of plume material beneath the oceanic plateau causes fiat subduction above the plume, resulting in a ＂bowed＂ shaped subducting slab. In plateau-only models, plateau accretion at the edge of the overriding plate results in trench migration around the edge of the plateau before subduction is re-established directly behind the trailing edge of the plateau. The plateau shortens and some plateau material subducts. The presence of buoyant plume material beneath the oceanic plateau has a profound influence on the behaviour of the convergent margin. In the plateau ~ plume model, plateau accretion causes rapid trench advance. Plate convergence is accommodated by shearing at the base of the plateau and shortening in the overriding plate. The trench migrates around the edge of the plateau and subduction is re-established well behind the trailing edge of the plateau, effectively embedding the plateau into the overriding plate. A slab window forms beneath the accreted plateau and plume material is transferred from the subducting plate to the over- riding plate through the window. In all of the models, the subduction zone maintains a relatively stable configuration away from the buoyancy anomalies within the downgoing plate. BACKGROUND It has previously been described that fall-associated injuries including fractures are commonly observed among patients with ***,knowledge on the risk of pacemaker implantation after admission due to femur fracture from large population-based epidemiologic data is ***,we investigated the risk of pacemaker implanta-tion following femur fracture in patients with and without a history of previous *** All patients with femur fracture between 2005-2017 were identified using the Danish Nationwide Patient *** these,patients already having a pacemaker were *** outcome was one-year risk of pacemaker implanta-tion and secondary outcome was one-year all-cause *** logistic regression was used to obtain absolute and relative risks of the study endpoint in relation to patients with versus without history of syncope and standardized to the age,sex,selected comorbidity and pharmacotherapy distribution of all *** Of 93,093 patients with femur fracture,5508(5.9%)had a history of syncope within five *** with prior syn-cope were slightly older(84 vs.83 years),more often male(33.6%vs.29.4%),and had more often comorbidities relative to those without history of ***-cause mortality was significantly higher among those with previous history of syncope com-pared to those without previous syncope(29.9%vs.28.6%,P=0.021).The relative mortality risk was 1.05(95%CI:1.01−1.09,P=0.021).A total of 695(0.8%)patients underwent pacemaker implantation within 5 years following femur fracture,and a signific-antly higher proportion of patients with syncope had a pacemaker implanted within one year(1.6%vs.0.7%,Psk,2.01[95%CI:1.55−2.46]).CONCLUsIONs In patients with femur fracture,a history of syncope was significantly associated with a higher one-year risk of pacemaker implantation.

The story of phosphorothioate modifications of DNA begins over 50 years ago and has unfolded like Frost's walk in the woods[1].In 1970,Fritz Eckstein synthesized oligonucleotides in which a non-bridging oxygen in the phosphodiester backbone was replaced by sulfur–the first phosphorothioate-modified nucleic acid[2].Twenty years passed until Zixin Deng and colleagues discovered a DNA degradation phenotype in bacteria possessing a 5-gene dnd cluster,with electrophoretic degradation caused by incorporation of sulfur into bacterial genomes[3].These roads of chemistry and biology met again another 20 years later with the discovery by Wang et *** Dnd proteins insert sulfur as a phosphorothioate in the genomes of diverse bacteria[4].This walk in the woods now picked up speed.

Physical aging is currently a major obstacle for the commercialization of PIM-1 membranes for gas separation applications.A well-known approach to reversing physical aging effects of PIM-1 membranes at laboratory scale is soaking them in lower alcohols,such as methanol and ***,this procedure does not seem applicable at industrial level,and other strategies must be *** this work,a regeneration method with alcohol vapors(ethanol or methanol)was developed to recover permeability of aged PIM-1 membranes,in comparison with the conventional soaking-in-liquid *** gas permeability and separation performance,before and post the regeneration methods,were assessed using a binary mixture of CO_(2) and CH_(4)(1:1,v:v).Our results show that an 8-hour methanol vapor treatment was sufficient to recover the original gas permeability,reaching a CO_(2) permeability>7000 barrer.

Aims and Methods Vascular plants are known to influence the production,transport and oxidation of methane in wetland soils,but these processes are not well *** plants grown in intact peat cores,we compared the influence upon methane emissions of 20 forb and graminoid species from European *** measured plant-mediated transport of methane(conduit or chimney effect)using a novel agar-sealing technique that prevented methane exchange from the bare soil to the *** Findings the plant-mediated transport(chimney effect)represented between 30%and almost 100%of the total methane flux,with graminoids exhibiting greater internal transport than *** general,plants with less dense root tissues and a relatively larger root volume exhibited a larger chimney *** species(12 out of 20)signif-icantly reduced methane emissions compared to bare soil and only one species,succisa pratensis,increased *** suggest that characterising vegetation in terms of plant functional traits and plant processes offers an effective method for estimating methane emis-sions from ***,we found no correlation between the magnitude of the chimney effect and the overall influence of different plant species on methane *** introducing a useful tool to study plant-mediated transport,this work suggests that characterising vegetation in terms of functional traits could improve estimates of methane emissions from wetlands,which in turn could help in designing mitigation strategies.
