Transition Metal Aluminum Boride as a New Candidate for Ambient-Condition Electrochemical Ammonia Synthesis

Achieving more meaningful N2 conversion by reducing the energy input and carbon footprint is now being investigated through a method of N2 fixation instead of the Haber-Bosch ***,the electrochemical N2 reduction reaction(NRR)method as a rising approach currently still shows low selectivity(Faradaic efficiency<10%)and high-energy consumption[applied potential at least-0.2 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode(RHE)].Here,the role of molybdenum aluminum boride single crystals,belonging to a family of ternary transition metal aluminum borides known as MAB phases,is reported for the electrochemical NRR for the first time,at a low applied potential(-0.05 V versus RHE)under ambient conditions and in alkaline *** to the unique nano-laminated crystal structure of the MAB phase,these inexpensive materials have been found to exhibit excellent electrocatalytic performances(NH3 yield:9.2μg h^-1cm^-2mgcat^-1.,Faradaic efficiency:30.1%)at the low overpotential,and to display a high chemical stability and sustained catalytic *** conjunction,further mechanism studies indicate B and Al as main-group metals show a highly selective affinity to N2 due to the strong interaction between the B 2p/Al 3p band and the N 2p orbitals,while Mo exhibits specific catalytic activity toward the subsequent reduction ***,the MAB-phase catalyst under the synergy of the elements within ternary compound can suppress the hydrogen evolution reaction and achieve enhanced NRR *** significance of this work is to provide a promising candidate in the future synthesis of ammonia.

The recent re-discovery of nano-laminated,ternary transition metal borides called‘MAB’phases(M=transition metal,A=Al,and B=B)has allowed for an alternative candidate material for certain high-performance applications[1,2].The discovery of de-sirable MAB phase properties including near-room temperature magnetocaloric effects of Fe 2 AlB 2[3],high-temperature oxidation resistance of MoAlB[4],and single-layer 2D molybdenum boride sheets obtained through the chemical exfoliation of laminated compounds has resulted in an increase in research into their syn-thesis and properties[5].

Background Providing cellular support and modifying the glial scar around the lesion are two key strategies for promoting axonal regeneration after spinal cord *** cells(SCs) are an important source of cells for neural repair;however,naive SCs have poor integration with spinal cord *** previous studies showed that over-expressing polysialic acid(PSA) on SCs by transducing them with polysialyltransferase(PST) facilitates their integration and migration in spinal *** also showed that lentiviral vector(LV) mediated PSA expression in injured spinal cord modifies the glial scar and promotes the growth of ascending sensory *** and Methods To study the PST/SCs transplantation combined with direct LV/PST injection in spinal cords after dorsal column transection to find if the combined treatments could lead to faster and profounder motor functional recovery compared with animals receiving combined GFP/SCs transplantation with control LV/GFP *** Morphological study showed significantly more injured corticospinal axons growing close to the lesion/transplant borders and into the caudal spinal cord in the PST group than in the GFP ***,there was a significant increase in serotonergic axonal sprouting around the lesion/transplants in the PST *** also found over-expressing PSA around the lesion site did not cause allodynia and hyperalgesia in our injury *** These results demonstrate the promising therapeutic benefit of over-expressing PSA in transplanted SCs and spinal cord in promoting axonal growth and restoring motor function.

Properties of spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

The experimental and theoretical research of spin-orbit-coupled ultracold atomic gases has advanced and expanded rapidly in recent years. Here, we review some of the progress that either was pioneered by our own work, has helped to lay the foundation, or has developed new and relevant techniques. Af- ter examining the experimental accessibility of all relevant spin-orbit coupling parameters, we discuss the fundamental properties and general applications of spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates （BECs） over a wide range of physical situations. For the harmonically trapped case, we show that the ground state phase transition is a Dicke-type process and that spin-orbit-coupled BECs provide a unique platform to simulate and study the Dicke model and Dicke phase transitions. For a homo- geneous BEC, we discuss the collective excitations, which have been observed experimentally using Bragg spectroscopy. They feature a roton-like minimum, the softening of which provides a potential mechanism to understand the ~round state phase transition. On the other hand, if the collective dy- namics are excited by a sudden quenching of the spin-orbit coupling parameters, we show that the resulting collective dynamics can be related to the famous Zitterbewegung in the relativistic realm. Finally, we discuss the case of a BEC loaded into a periodic optical potential. Here, the spin-orbit coupling generates isolated fiat bands within the lowest Bloch bands whereas the nonlinearity of the system leads to dynamical instabilities of these Bloch waves. The experimental verification of this instability illustrates the lack of Galilean invariance in the system.

Neoproterozoic tectonic geography of the south-east Congo Craton in Zambia as deduced from the age and composition of detrital zircons

The Southern Irumide Belt(SIB)is an orogenic belt consisting of a number of lithologically varied Mesoproterozoic and Neoproterozoic terranes that were thrust upon each *** belt lies along the southwest margin of the Archaean to Proterozoic Congo Craton,and bears a Neoproterozoic tectonothermal overprint relating to the Neoproterozoic-Cambrian collision between the Congo and Kalahari *** preserves a record of about 500 million years of plate interaction along this part of the Congo *** zircon samples from the SIB were analysed for U-Pb and Lu-Hf isotopes,as well as trace element *** data are used to constrain sediment-source relationships between SIB terranes and other Gondwanan terranes such as the local Congo Craton and Irumide belt and wider afield to Madagascar(Azania)and *** correlations are then used to interpret the Mesoproterozoic to Neoproterozoic affinity of the rocks and evolution of the *** zircon samples from the Chewore-Rufunsa and Kacholola(previously referred to as Luangwa-Nyimba)terranes of the SIB yield zircon U-Pb age populations and evolvedε(Hf)(t)values that are similar to the Muva Supergroup found throughout eastern Zambia,primarily correlating with Ubendian-Usagaran(ca.2.05-1.80 Ga)phase magmatism and a cryptic basement terrane that has been suggested to underlie the Bangweulu Block and Irumide *** data suggest that the SIB was depositionally connected to the Congo Craton throughout the *** more eastern Nyimba-Sinda terrane of the SIB(previously referred to as Petauke-Sinda terrane)records detrital zircon ages andε(Hf)(t)values that correlate with ca.1.1-1.0 Ga magmatism exposed elsewhere in the SIB and Irumide *** ascribe this difference in age populations to the polyphase development of the province,where the sedimentary and volcanic rocks of the Nyimba-Sinda terrane accumulated in extensional basins that developed in the *** deposition wou

Undoubtfully there is a strong interrelationship between sediment transport and river bed dynamics. Instable river beds are the result and the reason for erosion, transport and for accumulation of bed sediments. Since the investigations of Simons & richardson (1962) the interpretation on flow regime, bed roughness and resistance to flow is well investigated for Sandy bed material. In contrast there is a certain neglect of knowledge in the case of coarser material. The big difference between these river beds are caused by the distinctive erodibility of the coarse materials and their restricted availability. Nevertheless the regime concept is a good tool not only for the classification of many phenomena but will help to understand the dynamics of both river beds and transports of mountain torrents.
