Continuous cardiac output measured with a Swan-Ganz catheter reacts too slowly in animal experiments with sudden circulatory failure

Background : In many animal experiments, it is vital to detect sudden changes in cardiac output(CO). This porcine study compared CO that was measured with a SwanGanz pulmonary catheter with the gold standard(which was a transit-time flow probe around the pulmonary artery) during interventions that caused hemodynamic instability.Methods : In one series, 7 pigs were exposed to sudden changes in CO. In another series, 9 pigs experienced more prolonged changes in CO. All the pigs had a Swan-Ganz catheter placed into the pulmonary artery and a flow probe around the pulmonary artery. Adrenaline infusion and controlled hemorrhage were used to increase and decrease CO, respectively. The measurements of CO before and after each intervention were compared for correlation, agreement, and the time delay that it took each method to detect at least a 30% change in CO. A Bland– Altman test was used to identify correlations and agreements between the methods.Results : In the first series, there was a delay of 5– 7 min for the Swan Ganz catheter to register a 30% change in cardiac output, compared with the flow probe. However,during prolonged changes in CO in the second series, there was a good correlation between the 2 methods. Mixed venous oxygen saturation reacted faster to changes than did CO;both were measured via the Swan-Ganz catheter.Conclusions : In many animal studies, the use of Swan-Ganz catheters is suitable;however, in experiments with sudden hemodynamic instability, the flow probe is the most advantageous method for measuring CO.

BACKGROUND Coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)has a major influence on all parts of society.AIM To examine the consequences of the national lockdown and political initiatives during the first surge of the COVID-19 pandemic expressed by changes in incidences of musculoskeletal paediatric injuries.METHODS Study design was a retrospective multicenter cohort study.A‘pandemic’cohort was established from 16 March 2020 to 21 April 2020,where all institutions including day care and schools were closed.A‘pre-pandemic’cohort was established from the same period in 2019 for comparison.Included were all patients admitted at the emergency departments with paediatric musculoskeletal injuries(aged 0-15 years)identified by a relevant musculoskeletal ICD-10 diagnosis(DSxxx),concussions(DZ033D),or burns(DT2xx).RESULTS The‘pre-pandemic’cohort consisted of 2101 patients,and the‘pandemic’cohort consisted of 1070 patients,indicating a decrease of paediatric musculoskeletal injuries of 51%.The incidence of paediatric injury in the‘pre-pandemic’cohort was 10460/100000/year.In the‘pandemic’cohort,the incidence was 5344/100000/year.CONCLUSION A resource re-allocation to help serve the COVID-19 patients might be possible without reducing the level of care for injury-related paediatric patients.

The abvent of the ASOG and UNIFAC group-contribution methods for the prediction of activity coefficients approximately 15 years ago was a significant boost to the ability of chemical engineers to model chemical processes. This paper reviews the status and recent progress in the group-contribution approach to predicting liquid-phase activity coefficients.Several different types of liquid mixtures arc considered: non electrolyte mixtures with normal-boiling components; mixtures with dissolved gases; mixtures with polymers; and mixtures including strong electrolytes. It is concluded that in recent years much progress has been made in the development of group-contribution models for the prediction of activity coefficients. It is in addition shown that combining activity coefficient models with equations of state renders the group-contribution approach applicable also to the highpressure region.Due to space limitation, this review emphasizes UNIFAC and related models.

The Greenland ice core from NorthGRIP (NGRIP) contains a proxy climate record across the Pleistocene-Holocene boundary of unprecedented clarity and resolution. Analysis of an array of physical and chemical parameters within the ice enables the base of the Holocene, as reflected in the first signs of climatic warming at the end of the Younger Dryas/ Greenland Stadial 1 cold phase, to be located with a high degree of precision. This climatic event is most clearly reflected in an abrupt shift in deuterium excess values, accompanied by more gradual changes in δ18O, dust concentration, a range of chemical species, and annual layer thickness. A timescale based on multi-parameter annual layer counting provides an age of 11,700 yr b2k (before AD2000) for the base of the Holocene, with an estimated 2σ uncertainty of 99 yr. It is proposed that an archived core from this unique sequence should constitute the Global Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) for the base of the Holocene Series/Epoch (Quaternary System/Period).

＜正＞In Danish apple orchards grown according to the "Integrated Production" guidelines pest problems with capsid bugs（Hemiptera:Miridae） have occurred in recent years due to limitations in the use of insecticides.An insecticide treatment experiment compared effects of reduced dosages of azinphos-methyl（1/2,1/5 and 1/10 recomm.dos.） with dimethoate and phosalone. Effects on predatory bugs,mites and tortricids were measured as well.It was concluded that there are more beneficial than harmful capsids present in the apple orchards,that dimethoate must be considered as the most efficient compound against the pest species,but that the use should be restricted to the parts of the orchard suffering from capsid attacks.The treatment should be carried out on petal fall.

Auxin homeostasis is pivotal for normal plant growth and development. The superroot2 （sur2） mutant was initially isolated in a forward genetic screen for auxin overproducers, and SUR2 was suggested to control auxin conju- gation and thereby regulate auxin homeostasis. However, the phenotype was not uniform and could not be described as a pure high auxin phenotype, indicating that knockout of CYP83B1 has multiple effects. Subsequently, SUR2 was identified as CYP83B1, a cytochrome P450 positioned at the metabolic branch point between auxin and indole glucosinolate metabolism. To investigate concomitant global alterations triggered by knockout of CYP83B1 and the countermeasures chosen by the mutant to cope with hormonal and metabolic imbalances, 10-day-old mutant seedlings were characterized with respect to their transcriptome and metabolome profiles. Here, we report a global analysis of the sur2 mutant by the use of a combined transcriptomic and metabolomic approach revealing pronounced effects on several metabolic grids including the intersection between secondary metabolism, cell wall turnover, hormone metabolism, and stress responses. Metabolic and transcriptional cross-talks in sur2 were found to be regulated by complex interactions between both positively and negatively acting transcription factors. The complex phenotype of sur2 may thus not only be assigned to elevated levels of auxin, but also to ethylene and abscisic acid responses as well as drought responses in the absence of a water deficiency. The delicate balance between these signals explains why minute changes in growth conditions may result in the non-uniform phenotype. The large phenotypic variation observed between and within the different surveys may be reconciled by the complex and intricate hormonal balances in sur2 seedlings decoded in this study.
